Book The Administration of Dependencies

Download or read book The Administration of Dependencies written by Alpheus H. Snow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Administration of Dependencies: A Study of the Evolution of the Federal Empire, With Special Reference to American Colonial Problems The study here undertaken was suggested by a conversation two years ago, on the problems arising from the recent acquisition of our Insular Possessions, in which it was emphasized that there is one clause of the Constitution of the United States - the clause by which Congress is given power "to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the United States" - to which the Supreme Court has never attached a definite and certain meaning. Believing that the authors of the Constitution, in framing that instrument, almost simultaneously with the enactment, by the American Congress, of an ordinance for the administration of the Northwest Territory as a dependency of the American Union, must have intended the only clause on this subject to express the true principles of the administration of dependencies, as they believed them to be, I attempted to ascertain the correctness of this belief. The inquiry necessitated a careful examination of the issues of the American Revolution, and, as a knowledge of the theory and practice of the administration of the American Colonies is essential to the understanding of these issues, my investigation extended back to the inception of the American Colonies in 1584. As a result of the inquiry, I found my belief fully corroborated - the clause in question in fact containing a statement of the principles of the administration of dependencies in a Federal Empire. Book The First and Second United States Empires

Download or read book The First and Second United States Empires written by Jack E. Eblen and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century the fledgling republic of the United States was faced with the problem of devising a form of government to oversee its vast land possessions north and west of the Ohio River. To fill this need, Thomas Jefferson drafted the Ordinance of 1784, which evolved into the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Deliberately modeled on the British colonial system, it granted territorial governors broad autocratic powers. It defined government in the Northwest, and all other subsequent territories in the public domain. Eblen defines two historical periods (empires): 1787-1848; and 1849-1912; based on government land acquisition. This book describes the nature of government in all the contiguous territories of the United States, offering an original and comprehensive view of the role and meaning of territorial government, and the administration of the Western territories.

Book Sacred Interests

Download or read book Sacred Interests written by Karine V. Walther and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as Americans increasingly came into contact with the Islamic world, U.S. diplomatic, cultural, political, and religious beliefs about Islam began to shape their responses to world events. In Sacred Interests, Karine V. Walther excavates the deep history of American Islamophobia, showing how negative perceptions of Islam and Muslims shaped U.S. foreign relations from the Early Republic to the end of World War I. Beginning with the Greek War of Independence in 1821, Walther illuminates reactions to and involvement in the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, the efforts to protect Jews from Muslim authorities in Morocco, American colonial policies in the Philippines, and American attempts to aid Christians during the Armenian Genocide. Walther examines the American role in the peace negotiations after World War I, support for the Balfour Declaration, and the establishment of the mandate system in the Middle East. The result is a vital exploration of the crucial role the United States played in the Islamic world during the long nineteenth century--an interaction that shaped a historical legacy that remains with us today.
