Book excerpt: For centuries, the food and culinary delights of the Byzantine empire - centred on Constantinople - have captivated the west, although it appeared that very little information had been passed down to us. Andrew Dalby's "Tastes of Byzantium" now reveals in astonishing detail, for the first time, what was eaten in the court of the Eastern Roman Empire - and how it was cooked. Fusing the spices of the Romans with the seafood and simple local food of the Aegean and Greek world, the cuisine of the Byzantines was unique and a precursor to much of the food of modern Turkey and Greece. Bringing this vanished cuisine to life in vivid and sensual detail, Dalby describes the sights and smells of Constantinople and its marketplaces, relates travellers' tales and paints a comprehensive picture of the recipes and customs of the empire and their relationship to health and the seasons, love and medicine. For food-lovers and historians alike, "Tastes of Byzantium" is both essential and riveting - an extraordinary illumination of everyday life in the Byzantine world.

Book Mithridates VI and the Pontic Kingdom

Download or read book Mithridates VI and the Pontic Kingdom written by Jakob Munk Højte and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mithridates VI Eupator, the last king of Pontos, was undoubtedly one of the most prominent figures in the late Hellenistic period. Throughout his long reign (120-63 BC), the political and cultural landscape of Asia Minor and the Black Sea area was reshaped along new lines. The authors present new archaeological research and new interpretations of various aspects of Pontic society and its contacts with the Greek world and its eastern neighbours and investigate the background for the expansion of the Pontic Kingdom that eventually led to the confrontation with Rome.

Book King of the World

Download or read book King of the World written by Philip Mansel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis XIV was a man in pursuit of glory. Not content to be the ruler of a world power, he wanted the power to rule the world. And, for a time, he came tantalizingly close. Philip Mansel’s King of the World is the most comprehensive and up-to-date biography in English of this hypnotic, flawed figure who continues to captivate our attention. This lively work takes Louis outside Versailles and shows the true extent of his global ambitions, with stops in London, Madrid, Constantinople, Bangkok, and beyond. We witness the importance of his alliance with the Spanish crown and his success in securing Spain for his descendants, his enmity with England, and his relations with the rest of Europe, as well as Asia, Africa, and the Americas. We also see the king’s effect on the two great global diasporas of Huguenots and Jacobites, and their influence on him as he failed in his brutal attempts to stop Protestants from leaving France. Along the way, we are enveloped in the splendor of Louis’s court and the fascinating cast of characters who prostrated and plotted within it. King of the World is exceptionally researched, drawing on international archives and incorporating sources who knew the king intimately, including the newly released correspondence of Louis’s second wife, Madame de Maintenon. Mansel’s narrative flair is a perfect match for this grand figure, and he brings the Sun King’s world to vivid life. This is a global biography of a global king, whose power was extensive but also limited by laws and circumstances, and whose interests and ambitions stretched far beyond his homeland. Through it all, we watch Louis XIV progressively turn from a dazzling, attractive young king to a belligerent reactionary who sets France on the path to 1789. It is a convincing and compelling portrait of a man who, three hundred years after his death, still epitomizes the idea of le grand monarque.

Book RHYTHM AND DRUMMING DEMYSTIFIED

Download or read book RHYTHM AND DRUMMING DEMYSTIFIED written by Dave DiCenso and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lessons in Rhythm and Drumming Demystified (R.A.D.D.) utilize a process of adapting the rudiments---and the countless variations and grooves they spawn---to the framework of five systems of common rhythmic figures, as a means to increase one's control and flexibility with any sticking or time-feel. The book also contains a groundbreaking system for using the voice to develop one's "internal clock." By using this system, drummers can improve their groove by learning to generate time with their mind and allow their body to simply be a conduit between their perception of the time and its manifestation on the drumset.

Book Hidden Values Or Hidden Goals a Psychological Analysis of Muslim Cultures

Download or read book Hidden Values Or Hidden Goals a Psychological Analysis of Muslim Cultures written by Andreas Eppink and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different Hidden Values (Goals), Different Cultures One may be tempted to quickly dismiss fanatics or terrorists, yelling and boasting political leaders with the throwaway thought that "those people are insane." But their sanity is not the issue with which we are dealing. Crazy or not, dismissive judgment of those fanatics or terrorists will not lead to an understanding of their basic psychological makeup, whereas this understanding is critical if one may reasonably expect that the fight against terrorism will yield any success. To change things, armed forces --just as terror and spreading hatred-- have very limited effectiveness. The contemporary Muslim world appears to be a depressive society, in conflict with its own feelings of sorrow, mutual distrust, humiliation, impotence and fear, each facet of which leads to intolerance. In essence, cultures differ from one another. The analysis of cultures in terms of the Hidden Values (Goals) can help in understanding those differences. With this understanding we can find out why religious and political conflicts may arise and whether they can be solved. The Hidden Goal of RELIGIOUS ORDER is not as predominant in other cultures as it is in Muslim cultures. However, this does not mean that this Hidden Goal prevails everywhere and always in the Muslim world. Cultural and sub-cultural differences are the outcome of different Hidden Goal combinations. The Hidden Values (Goals) may vary in ranking in every culture. In "drawing-board states" like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, or many other countries in the world, people following strong opposing Hidden Values (Goals) are compelled to live together. We have to accept that these people can never live in peace with one another if their differences are not dealt with. These differences cannot simply be bridged by "democracy." Often only by giving some kind of regional self-governance can avoid (further) conflicts. A golden rule to bear in mind is: the central state concept will only be accepted with hard feelings, if at all, in societies where independence and freedom predominate, and the Hidden Values (Goals) of STABILITY is low in the ranking. Opposing governing concepts make it unlikely that the Western (Jeffersonian) concept of democracy will solve the social-economical problems in many of these regions. Here, alliances and treaties seem the only way to build peaceful communities. Muslims and non-Muslims must engage themselves intensively in promoting constructive information and knowledge. Long-term planning should include the founding of new scientific institutes to educate young Muslims in tolerant Muslim principles. Those institutes have the potential to become great houses of spreading broad and tolerant knowledge, like those institutes in the old days before the Ijtihad (independent thinking) came to an end. This book concludes with recommendations concerning interventions and change, control and administration, and effective communication.
