Since the abolition of purchase in the army and the application to candidates for admis sion to the Bar Of the system of examinations, young gentlemen, unable to qualify by the exercise of their brains for the profession of arms or the law, have had to turn elsewhere for a livelihood. Book Talma on the Actor s Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Talma on the Actor s Art Classic Reprint written by Franc ̧ois Joseph Talma and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talma on the Actor's Art No one an read Talma's subtle yet simple description of the qualities and the course of study essential to the actor, without a conviction that acting is one of the most fascinating of the arts. To the actor the whole field of human nature is Open. Whether in the ideal world of the stage or in the actual world of social intercourse, hismind is continually accumulating impressions Which become a part of his artistic being. This experience is common to the students of 'other arts, 'ibut the actor has this advantage, that all he learns is embodied in his own personality, not translated through some medium, like the painter's canvas or the novelist's page. At the same time, this purely personal art is subjected to the most severe tests. It is easier to detect a aw in an actor's impersonation than an improbability in a book. The man enacts the character before many - a false intonation jars immediately upon the ear, an unnatural look or gesture is promptly convicted by the eye. The co-operation of sensibility and intelligence of which Talma speaks, has thus to be conducted under the most exacting conditions. There must be no suggestion of effort. The essence of acting is its apparent Spontaneity. Perfect illusion is attained when every effect seems to be an accident. If the declamation is too measured, the sense of truth is at once impaired 3 if, on the other hand, it falls only the shadow of a shade below the level of appropriate expres sion, the auditor's sympathy is instantly checked. The union of grandeur without pomp, and nature without triviality, is of an artistic ideals the most difficult to attain; and with this goal before him no actor can feel that his art is a plaything. Download or read book Scenes From the Life of an Actor Classic Reprint written by George Handel Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes From the Life of an Actor Is it true, that the title of a Book is one attractive point to the reader in search of novelty? If so, there is much in a name. The reputation of an author, doubtless, adds to the promise given in the chosen title, and if the expected work be the biography of a person eminent during his life, popular from the possession of talents, exerted in pleasing or astonishing such of his fellow-beings as came within his sphere of action, then public attention may be reasonably expected to be excited at its advent, and its mission for good or ill established by critics competent to judge. Men of different political views, persons whose religious creeds are at variance, naturally enough would differ when a proposition was offered for consideration by one of their number, although the professed object was given out as one of general good. Notwithstanding Booth's lack of business sagacity, his confiding disposition, his indifference to material gain, and his propensity to drift and dream, he earned three successive fortune-s, and, dying at the age of sixty, left an estate of more than half a million. His pecuniary success was great, but his greater success was that of mind and soul. He was a great man, and his memory will be honored always in the annals of our stage. Booth's Theatre, after he left it, passed through the custody of various speculative managers, and ultimately it was abandoned: but in his hands it never was a fail ure, and in endeavors that are now current the spirit of it seems to live again and to breathe a monition to the People to guard and promote the sacred cause of which he made it the emblem: for it is with the People, in their love and enjoyment of acting and in their allegiance to the Actor and his Art, that the Present of the Theatre rests, and it is to the People that its Future is committed.
