Book An overview and evaluation of government actions on SMEs in the EU the UK and specific regions of the UK

Download or read book An overview and evaluation of government actions on SMEs in the EU the UK and specific regions of the UK written by Nina Rakowski and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-01-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 64 %, University of Lincoln (Business School of Lincoln), language: English, abstract: In the EU we have 23 million of small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) providing 79 millions of jobs. It will be explained shortly by the author what the relevant sizes are of defining an SME correctly. 99 % of all enterprises in the EU are SMEs. This means, that they are the backbone of the European economy, acknowledged as a constant source of ideas, innovation, entrepreneurial skills, the principal providers of existing jobs and the main source of new employment. But as they only have limited human and financial resources, they often are caught in their particular environment and are not able to expand their business to other countries. This means, that they can not act internationally like all the big and global oriented companies. Things like bureaucracy burdens, getting their innovated products duplicated by the big companies, not having the knowledge about opportunities to enter new markets, lack of finance, etc. are making it very hard for them to survive. And making the step from local to international, national or even regional can turn out in big issues as well. That’s why the European Commission has already done and will do even more in future to protect Europe ́ s SME economy and support them to get bigger and prosper. When SMEs are growing they will be able to provide more jobs and therefore our economy will be able to keep pace with the dynamic economy of the 21st century. Policy needs to provide the right business environment. They have to improve the framework in which SMEs operate. The Policy has to focus on helping the different types of small business thrive and prosper, whether they are start-ups, high-growth companies, traditional family firms, artisans or professionals working by their own.

Book The Promotion of Small and Medium sized Enterprises in the EU

Download or read book The Promotion of Small and Medium sized Enterprises in the EU written by Elisabeth Herrle and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0, course: Monetary and Fiscal Policies of the European Union, 36 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This essay provides basic information on the way the EU tries to promote small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This policy field is very complex as SMEs are affected by Community legislation on a host of issues. As a result, over the years, the institutions of the EU introduced a kaleidoscope of programmes targeted at SMEs to enhance their situation on the market. To examine the most important ones of these programmes, first and foremost, the promotion of SMEs will be integrated into the industrial policy of the EU: I will shed some light on the rationale for an industrial policy and the three different approaches to it. Furthermore, I will elaborate on the evolution of the industrial policy within the EU. In the second part, I will have a closer look at SMEs in Europe, how they are defined and what their role is in the European economy. After having given this background information, I will examine how the EU promotes SMEs. First of all, I will dwell on the European Charter for Small Enterprises followed by some information on the Multiannual Programme for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. In addition, I will give some details on programmes to promote conditions conducive for entrepreneurial activity; The Entrepreneurship Action Plan and the eEurope 2005 Action Plan respectively Go Digital. Finally, I will establish a connection between the EU industrial policy and the Lisbon Strategy.

Book Annual report on European SMEs 2020 2021

Download or read book Annual report on European SMEs 2020 2021 written by Karen Hope and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 was a momentous year for EU SMEs, as well as for EU business and citizens more generally. The Covid-19 crisis brought to an abrupt halt or even reversed the gains made by the EU SME sector over the past decade. Many industries, especially in the SME-intensive services sector, experienced large declines in sales as a result of the various lockdowns and other measures introduced by Member States to fight the spread of Covid-19, although conversely, some industries actually saw their sales increase. However, the various business support measures implemented by Member States during the pandemic limited the employment impact of the decline in economic activity. The first part of this report reviews the impact of the pandemic on EU SMEs in 2020, and the likely performance of EU SMEs in 2021, after providing a brief overview of their pre-pandemic performance. The second part of the report focuses on the digitalisation of SMEs. The use by SMEs in 2020 of various digital tools (e.g. remote working, online/click and collect selling, etc.) helped to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. In this regard, the 2020 'EU SME Strategy for a sustainable and digital Europe' was launched at the most opportune time. It aims to "support European SMEs through strengthening their capacities to adapt to climate neutrality challenges, help them to reap the benefits of digitalisation, reduce the regulatory burden that SMEs face, and improve their opportunities to access finance". This report supports the SME Strategy, by reviewing and assessing the digitalisation activities undertaken by SMEs so far, especially during the pandemic, as well as the digitalisation issues and challenges faced by SMEs, and actual and potential policy responses to these challenges. The analysis focuses on two distinct aspects of the digitalisation of SMEs. Firstly, the performance of SMEs which are active in the digital sector and, secondly, the digitalisation of activities carried out by all SMEs, irrespective of sector.
