Book The Order of the Acquisition of the English Article System by Polish Learners in Different Proficiency Groups

Download or read book The Order of the Acquisition of the English Article System by Polish Learners in Different Proficiency Groups written by Artur Swiateka and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a juxtaposition of studies conducted in different proficiency groups (elementary, intermediate and advanced) among Polish students studying English. The theoretical section of the book discusses all necessary theories, both from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, related to the acquisition of the English article system in both L1 and L2. The empirical part of the book concerns the studies carried out among Polish study participants. The results of the studies indicate that L2 Polish users acquire the English article system better as their linguistic competences advance. These outcomes prove that L2 acquisition of the English article system is facilitated better in the advanced group of subjects in contrast to the least advanced group, which had tremendous difficulties with the acquisition and subsequent relevant use of the English article system.

Book EFL Learners Acquisition of the English Article System

Download or read book EFL Learners Acquisition of the English Article System written by Mahmoud Hajjar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses several issues that have been controversial in the literature surrounding second language (L2) acquisition, including the role that the first language (L1) plays in development, the ability of L2 learners to acquire properties of functional categories not realised in their L1, the nature of L2 development itself, and the extent to which such development is constrained by innate linguistic capacities (universal grammar). These issues are considered by investigating the acquisition of the English articles by speakers of an L1 that has an article system encoding definiteness (Arabic), and an L1 that lacks articles (Japanese), at different proficiency levels in English. Those who will find this book useful include policy makers in language education as well as students and their teachers. Researchers in the field of second language acquisition can benefit from reading this book to keep abreast of the latest developments in this area in the hope of stimulating further research.

Book Second Language Acquisition of Articles

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition of Articles written by María del Pilar García Mayo and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in this collection address a topic that has recently become the focus of considerable interest in second language acquisition (SLA) research: the acquisition of articles. Languages appear to vary in whether they have articles (English, German, Norwegian do, but Chinese, Japanese, Russian do not). Languages that have articles also appear to divide into those that realise definiteness (e.g. English) and those that realise specificity (e.g. Samoan). When speakers of one type of language learn an L2 of a different type, issues of central concern to SLA research arise: the nature of L1 influence, the time course of development, ultimate attainment, the relationship between performance and competence, and the role of Universal Grammar. These issues are considered in nine studies, written by researchers whose work is at the forefront of enquiry, that offer new data, new perspectives and new insights into the way L2 speakers acquire articles.

Book Generative SLA in the Age of Minimalism

Download or read book Generative SLA in the Age of Minimalism written by Tania Leal and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-08-17 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together empirical studies and keynote addresses presented at the 15th Generative Approaches to Second Language Acquisition conference hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno in 2019. The studies selected for the volume reflect how the latest developments in generative syntactic theory and psycholinguistic methodologies have impacted second language acquisition research in the last decade, from the linguistic properties under investigation and L1-L2/Ln language pairings down to the specific research questions in each study. The minimalist view of language architecture is at the center of studies investigating L2 acquisition of raising, scope, definiteness, phonological representations, and interlanguage transfer. The volume also showcases the latest research on interface phenomena, language processing, and working memory. Studies analyze data collected with a variety of L2 populations from adult foreign language learners to adolescent L3 learners and heritage speakers.

Book The Determinant Phrase in the Spanish Interlanguage of Native Speakers of Swahili

Download or read book The Determinant Phrase in the Spanish Interlanguage of Native Speakers of Swahili written by Maria Landa Buil and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a significant contribution to the Second Language Acquisition research field as it is the only study that exists on the acquisition of the Spanish Determiner Phrase (DP) by speakers of a Bantu language. The corpus was compiled using data from 14 interviews carried out over a 25-month period. The subjects of the study were four Swahili speakers learning Spanish as a third language (English is their L2) at the State University of Zanzibar, Tanzania. The data collected longitudinally was used to characterize the DP of the Swahili-Spanish IL and observe Bantu transfer. This study also represents an important contribution to the discussion on Creole formation since it provides valuable information on the role played by adult speakers in the formation of Creole languages. In this book, the features of the DP in the IL are compared with those of the DP found in three Spanish-lexifier Creoles: Palenquero, Chabacano and Papiamento. Although similar work has been done comparing the interlanguage of learners of English and French with Creoles that have these languages as lexifiers, no comparative studies of this type have been conducted for Spanish. Moreover, in the case of Palenquero, this study also represents the first of its kind to examine languages in which the substrate and the L1 involved belong to the same family of Bantu languages.

Book Representational Deficits in SLA

Download or read book Representational Deficits in SLA written by Neal Snape and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this collection is to explore the question of “representational deficits” in second language acquisition, currently a much-debated topic. The volume is intended as a tribute to Roger Hawkins, a leading scholar in generative second language acquisition, whose research has been devoted to explaining lack of native-like success in terms of representational deficits. The papers in this volume feature a range of studies, all undertaken within a generative linguistic framework, which investigate various properties of L2 grammar bearing on the question of whether or not there are representational deficits in the post-critical-period L2 learners’ grammar. The significance of such deficits, if their existence can be confirmed, is that they provide support for the claim, at least for the type of L2 learner under investigation, that there are insurmountable obstacles to ultimate attainment.

Book The Acquisition of Spanish Morphosyntax

Download or read book The Acquisition of Spanish Morphosyntax written by Ana Teresa Pérez-Leroux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in linguistic theory, as well as the growing body of evidence from languages other than English, provide new opportunities for deeper explorations into how language is represented in the mind of learners. This collection of new empirical studies on the acquisition of Spanish morphosyntax by leading researchers in the field of language acquisition, specifically contributes to the characterization of the L1 / L2 connection in acquisition. Using L1 and L2 Spanish data from children and adults, the authors seek to address the central questions that have occupied developmental psycholinguists in the final decades of the previous century and that will no doubt continue engaging them into the present one.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition Morphosyntax and Semantics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition Morphosyntax and Semantics written by Tania Ionin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides innovative and comprehensive coverage of research on the second language acquisition (SLA) of morphosyntax, semantics, and the interface between the two. Organized by grammatical topic, the chapters are written by experts from formal and functional perspectives in the SLA of morphosyntax and semantics, providing in-depth yet accessible coverage of these areas. All chapters highlight the theoretical underpinnings of much work in SLA and their links to theoretical syntax and semantics; making comparisons to other populations, including child language acquirers, bilinguals, and heritage speakers (links to first language acquisition and bilingualism); dedicating a portion of each chapter to the research methods used to investigate the linguistic phenomenon in question (links to psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics); and, where relevant, including intervention studies on the phenomenon in question (links to applied linguistics). The volume will be indispensable to SLA researchers and students who work on any aspect of the SLA of morphosyntax or semantics. With its coverage of a variety of methodologies and comparisons to other populations (such as child language acquirers, early bilinguals, heritage speakers, and monolingual adults), the handbook is expected to also be of much interest to linguists who work in psycholinguistics, first language acquisition, and bilingualism.

Book Crosslinguistic Influence in Multilinguals

Download or read book Crosslinguistic Influence in Multilinguals written by Wai Lan Tsang and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on a research project conducted in multilingual Hong Kong, where Cantonese is the mother tongue (L1) of the majority of the population and learning different foreign languages is commonplace. In addition to English, which is usually the second language (L2), more and more people learn other languages, such as French (L3). Drawing on the notions of ‘interface’ and ‘reverse transfer’ in second language acquisition, this book addresses the possible role of L3 French in the acquisition of English as an L2 with two major concerns: firstly, the degree to which L3 acquisition will bring about a positive or negative transfer effect on L2 acquisition and secondly, the way in which an L3 interacts with an L2 and/or even an L1 on different interfaces as identified in second language acquisition. The study will appeal to researchers interested in second and third language acquisition, bi- and multilingualism and crosslinguistic influence.

Book Third Language Acquisition in Adulthood

Download or read book Third Language Acquisition in Adulthood written by Jennifer Cabrelli Amaro and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, researchers have acknowledged that the study of third language acquisition cannot simply be viewed as an extension of the study of bilingualism, and the present volume’s authors agree that a point of departure that embraces the unique properties that differentiate L2 acquisition from L3/Ln acquisition is essential. From linguistic, sociological, psychological, educational and cognitive viewpoints, it has become increasingly apparent that the study of L3/Ln acquisition can provide new evidence to help resolve ongoing debates in these areas of study. This volume uniquely provides a wide-ranging overview of current trends in the study of adult additive multilingualism from formal, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives, adding new insights into adult multilingual epistemology. This collection includes critical reviews of L3/Ln morphosyntax, phonology, and the lexicon, as well as individual studies with unique language pairings including Romance, Germanic, Slavic, and Asian languages.
