Book Curriculum Integration Learner centered and Curriculum centered Approaches in a High School Mathematics Course

Download or read book Curriculum Integration Learner centered and Curriculum centered Approaches in a High School Mathematics Course written by Alicia R. Martin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quantitative purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not learner-centered curriculum and integrated curriculum will significantly improve students' achievement and self-efficacy in mathematics. The qualitative purpose of this study was to understand how students' perceptions about learner-centered curriculum and integrated curriculum impact their achievement and self-efficacy in mathematics. There were 120 Algebra II students from Achievers High School. The study was conducted during the 2010-2011 school year. Four pre-existing classes were assessed through the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale (MSES) test as a pre-test and as a post-test. The researcher conducted focus group interviews and recorded self-reflective notes in a researcher's journal for each class. A quasi-experimental design was used to explore the effects of the learner-centered and integrated curriculum compared to the traditional, curriculum-centered approach on students' achievement and self-efficacy. The independent variables were the type of curriculum (learner-centered vs. curriculum centered) and the style of curriculum integration (instruction with integration vs. instruction without integration). The dependent variables were assessed using the TAKS and MSES. There were two 2 X 2 Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) tests used to analyze the data. Statistical significance was determined at the .05 level of significance. The results indicated that the interaction between the learner-centered curriculum and curriculum integration significantly improved students' achievement but not their self-efficacy in mathematics. An additional finding revealed a significant difference in scores on the TAKS but not on the MSES between high school students who are instructed with curriculum integration and those who receive instruction without integration. It was also found that there was no significant difference in scores on the TAKS and MSES between high school students who were instructed with the curriculum-centered approach and those who are instructed with the learner-centered curriculum.

Book Building a Learning Culture in America

Download or read book Building a Learning Culture in America written by Kevin P. Chavous and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building a Learning Culture in America takes an incisive, no-holds-barred look at how America embraced and cultivated a culture of learning in the past, how that culture declined in the sixties and seventies, and what must be done to regain it. From political gridlock to systemic discrimination, Chavous details the many ways education today is off track, and cites specific examples of what Americans might do to reform it. Part memoir and part manifesto, this is a frank, fascinating, and personal account of Chavous’ experience as a politician working to enact school choice in Washington, DC, and throughout the United States. During the course of his political career, he has seen political skirmishes and party scuffles interfere with the United States’ ability to improve its educational system. These conflicts did not cause the problem; they were merely a result. The true problem was more basic: the decline of America’s learning culture. This pivotal work calls for Americans to unite in making the changes needed to reestablish a learning culture as an inherent piece of the American national fabric, and tells us how to begin.
