Book The Accreditation Process in Mississippi from the Perspective of Community College Administrators

Download or read book The Accreditation Process in Mississippi from the Perspective of Community College Administrators written by Stacey Smith Hollingsworth and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research studies show that potential barriers may hinder a successful accreditation process. This research study examined perceptions of Mississippi's community/junior college administrators relating to the accreditation process in general, their communication with the regional accrediting agency, and their institution's facilitation of the accreditation process. 150 administrators participated in an online survey containing 36 questions. Likert-scale response set type questions were used to provide precise information related to the research. Two open-ended questions were also used to provide for a deeper understanding of the administrators' perceptions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. ANOVA tests were run to determine if differences existed in the administrators' perceptions based on the administrators' size of institution, latest accreditation process, or position titles. The findings of the study showed that the administrators agreed or strongly agreed with the majority of the survey statements related to the accreditation process in general, their communication with the regional accrediting agency, and their institution's facilitation of the accreditation process. In addition, the findings indicated that there were no significant differences in administrators' perceptions related to the accreditation process. An analysis of the responses to the two open-ended questions suggested the need for consistency in elements relating to the peer review committee's training, experience, and size, and the need for consistency in information and communication from the accrediting agency. Responses also indicated a need for additional funding and personnel. Major themes drawn from the administrators' documented perceptions included the following: (a) the self-study (compliance certification) was a major component of the accreditation process in general; (b) a liaison between the institution and the accrediting agency was a necessity for communication between the two entities; and (c) the leadership committee provided adequate assistance to facilitate the process at the institutional level. The size of the institution, the latest initiation of the process, and the position titles within the institution made no significant statistical difference in the administrators' perceptions.

Book Administrator Perceptions of the Community College Mission in the State of Mississippi and how it May be Influenced by the Addition of Community College Baccalaureate Programs

Download or read book Administrator Perceptions of the Community College Mission in the State of Mississippi and how it May be Influenced by the Addition of Community College Baccalaureate Programs written by Scharvin S. Grizzell and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, community colleges that chose to offer community college baccalaureate (CCB) programs were looked upon in a negative light (Rice, 2015). However, as the need for specialized baccalaureates within specific fields and job markets have continued to grow (McKee, 2005), CCB programs are becoming more widely accepted throughout the United States. In spite of this paradigm shift, Mississippi is one of the remaining states that have not embraced the idea of CCB programs, in spite of its statistical deficiency in regards to baccalaureate degree holding citizens (Williams, 2010). The focus of this study was to explore the perceptions of community college administrators in Mississippi with regards to the influence of CCB programs to the community college mission of institutions in their state. This study indicates that administrators in Mississippi recognize the benefits of offering CCB programs, but do not want CCB programs to take away from the well-established statewide higher education system through mission creep. Many of the strong position statements received overwhelmingly neutral responses. In contrast, Administrators who chose to give their opinion indicated that they are not familiar with how CCB programs are implemented, and do not believe that Mississippi is ready for CCB programs across the state. However, respondents felt that the community college mission is always evolving, should meet students’ needs, and varies from location to location. The findings also show that administrators are favorable to the piloting of CCB programs at a few (1-2) institutions, even though they believe the programs will take funding away from current programs and do not want community colleges evolving into 4-year institutions. The study also concludes that there is a significant difference between institution size and survey questions #18 and #20. There is also a significant difference between length of time in the community college sector and survey questions #15, #17, and #18.

Book A Community College s Loss of Accreditation

Download or read book A Community College s Loss of Accreditation written by Janet L. Young and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, Urban Community College (pseudonym) became the first public community college to lose its accreditation. In order to continue serving its students the school was required to partner with a neighboring college and was renamed an "Educational Center." The overall objective of this study was to gain an understanding of the perceived leadership and governance issues that led to the college's loss of accreditation and the affects this phenomenon had on the campus community. This qualitative case study included a review of primary source documents including reports, journal and newspaper articles, internal documents, and 15 interviews of past and present staff, faculty, administrators, and special trustees. The participants were selected based upon their ability to contribute historical information, insights, and perspectives on various issues relating to leadership and governance prior to the college's loss of accreditation. The major finding revealed that a lack of adherence to policy and practice which included corruption, unethical behavior, insufficient fiscal oversight, and micromanagement on the part of the Board of Trustees were the main issues that led to Urban Community College's loss of accreditation. The findings also showed that the faculty acted to bring the leadership problems to the attention of the authorities for many years. The study also revealed that the college's loss of accreditation had a profound and negative emotional effect on the campus community. Recommendations for policy and practice aimed at improving a community's ability to select and monitor Board members' actions as well as recommendations for future research are presented. Book The Unknowing Knowers Faculty and the Accreditation Process

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accountability of higher education is a prevailing concern of state and federal governments. Six regional accreditation agencies provide one avenue of accountability. The purpose of this research is to determine how faculty members make meaning of the accreditation process. A deeper understanding of how faculty members make meaning of the experience will help higher education constituents to determine if changes in the process are necessary. The college included in this study is Ourown Community College (OCC). This college was selected based on having undergone a recent accreditation process. The faculty members who participated were chosen based on the following criteria: they were employed at OCC during the accreditation process and throughout this research. The research employed three sources of data. First, the faculty members in this study participated in three individual interviews. Second, two focus group discussions were held. Third, a document analysis of the final accreditation report by the regional accreditor of the college was performed. The first and second faculty interviews focused on questions that describe their perspective of the experience. The third faculty interview addressed gaps or inconsistencies in information from the first two interviews. The focus group discussions consisted of general questions about the accreditation experience. The document analysis of the final accreditation report focused on faculty comments and data in the report that further illuminate the faculty members’ understanding of the accreditation experience. Furthermore, this analysis completed triangulation and reinforced reliability of the study. The qualitative data collected were analyzed for their relationship to the research questions in this study. The data were analyzed for common themes, significant differences, and descriptive quotes that embody the inner thoughts of the participants. Five themes became significant. Faculty made meaning of the accreditation process based on feeling: befuddled and bewildered; disconcerted and disoriented; disconnected and detached; unfamiliar and unidentified; and the desire for collegiality and collaboration. The faculty stories revealed that when faculty are informed about the process by those whom they feel most comfortable and familiar in settings where they do not feel threatened, they gain more knowledge about the process.

Book In the Nation s Compelling Interest

Download or read book In the Nation s Compelling Interest written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is rapidly transforming into one of the most racially and ethnically diverse nations in the world. Groups commonly referred to as minorities-including Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and Alaska Natives-are the fastest growing segments of the population and emerging as the nation's majority. Despite the rapid growth of racial and ethnic minority groups, their representation among the nation's health professionals has grown only modestly in the past 25 years. This alarming disparity has prompted the recent creation of initiatives to increase diversity in health professions. In the Nation's Compelling Interest considers the benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity, and identifies institutional and policy-level mechanisms to garner broad support among health professions leaders, community members, and other key stakeholders to implement these strategies. Assessing the potential benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity among health professionals will improve the access to and quality of healthcare for all Americans.

Book New Life for Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Download or read book New Life for Historically Black Colleges and Universities written by Vann R. Newkirk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2008, Georgia state senator Seth Harp ignited controversy when he proposed merging two historically Black colleges with nearby predominantly white colleges to save money. Less than a year later, Mississippi governor Haley Barbour sought to unite Mississippi's three predominantly Black colleges. These efforts kindled renewed interest in historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the nation and the globe. In this study, HBCU officials and faculty attempt to identify the challenges that HBCUs face, explore the historic origin of HBCU management systems, and identify models of success that will improve the long-term viability of the HBCU. By analyzing HBCUs within a larger framework of American higher education and the cultural context in which HBCUs operate, these essays introduce a new paradigm in the quest to ensure that HBCUs continue to play an important role in the education of Americans of all races.
