Book War and politics in the Elizabethan counties

Download or read book War and politics in the Elizabethan counties written by Neil Younger and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War and politics in the Elizabethan counties reassesses the national war effort during the wars against Spain (1585–1603). Drawing on a mass of hitherto neglected sources, it finds a political system in much better health than has been thought, revising many existing assumptions about the weaknesses of the state in the face of military change. It examines politics and government from the court and privy council to the counties and parishes, assessing the central regime as well as the local machinery of lord lieutenancies which provided troops to fight Elizabeth’s wars and ran the militia which defended against Spanish invasion attempts. The problems of government are assessed in a wide-ranging set of contexts, addressing popular attitudes to the war, government propaganda, local resistance and the problems of governing a country divided in religion. In this way the book covers much more than the war alone, providing a new assessment of the effectiveness of the whole Elizabethan state.

Book The Life and Achievements of Sir John Popham 1531 1607

Download or read book The Life and Achievements of Sir John Popham 1531 1607 written by Douglas Walthew Rice and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length biography of a pillar of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean state. A devoted servant of the Queen, Popham played a prominent part as her Attorney-General and Lord Chief Justice in the famous trials of Essex and Ralegh. He condemned to death the Gunpowder Plotters, and acquired a reputation as a severe judge. Enterprising and practical, he promoted attempts to settle Englishmen in Ireland and to drain the Fens of Cambridgeshire. Popham's final achievement was to establish the Virginia Company and send out an expedition that set afoot the first English colony in New England. Sir John was not only important but also notorious, becoming a legendary bogeyman in popular imagination. Accounts written hitherto have focused on that aspect, but this book aims to give a balanced account, giving credit to Popham as a visionary statesman and creative entrepreneur at the very center of English government. This book is thoroughly illustrated.

Book The Image of Georgian Bath 1700 2000

Download or read book The Image of Georgian Bath 1700 2000 written by Peter Borsay and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-07-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study explores the evolution, structure, and uses of the image of Georgian Bath, from its genesis in the eighteenth century to its renaissance in the twentieth century. In recent decades there has been both a popular resurgence of interest in heritage and tradition, and a growing academic awareness of the power of imagery in shaping the lives of individuals and societies. There is perhaps no city in Britain so saturated in history and layered with historic imagery as Bath. It therefore provides an ideal case-study to investigate the dynamic fusion and impact of the forces of past and representation. The dominant perception of Bath today is that of a classical and particularly Georgian city. In this stimulating and scholarly study, Peter Borsay examines the construction and development of this image. Its principal components, biography and architecture, are explored, together with the media through which it was constructed and transmitted, as well as its commercial, social, political, and psychological uses. Dr Borsay concludes by relating the findings for Bath to current debates on towns, heritage, and the nature of history.

Book Poor Relief in England 1350 1600

Download or read book Poor Relief in England 1350 1600 written by Marjorie Keniston McIntosh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the mid-fourteenth century and the Poor Laws of 1598 and 1601, English poor relief moved toward a more coherent and comprehensive network of support. Marjorie McIntosh's study, the first to trace developments across that time span, focuses on three types of assistance: licensed begging and the solicitation of charitable alms; hospitals and almshouses for the bedridden and elderly; and the aid given by parishes. It explores changing conceptions of poverty and charity and altered roles for the church, state and private organizations in the provision of relief. The study highlights the creativity of local people in responding to poverty, cooperation between national levels of government, the problems of fraud and negligence, and mounting concern with proper supervision and accounting. This ground-breaking work challenges existing accounts of the Poor Laws, showing that they addressed problems with forms of aid already in use rather than creating a new system of relief.
