Book excerpt: The Renaissance court masque, traditionally an entertainment of music, dancing, pageantry, and spectacular scenic effects, was transformed by Ben Jonson into a serious mode of literary expression. By using its peculiar viability as a forum for his dramatic imagination, Jonson resolved and transcended the satiric vision that was in many ways the substance of Jonsonian drama. He instructed as well as applauded his courtly audience and, with the aid of the great theatrical designer Inigo Jones, brought unity to the diverse elements of the masque, infusing them with a moral and poetic life. This modernized version of Jonson’s masques is the most carefully edited and annotated text available; it is also the first one-volume edition to be published. It includes the faithful reprinting of Jonson’s own glosses and notes, translated and annotated, as well as explanatory notes which offer the most detailed critical commentary ever undertaken. In the Introduction, itself and important essay about the Renaissance stage, Mr. Orgel discusses Jonson’s development of the masque in relation to Inigo Jones’ development of the illusionistic stage. Mr. Orgel is associate professor of English at the University of California in Berkeley.

Book The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia written by D. Heyward Brock and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friend and rival of Shakespeare, Ben Jonson was one of the most learned and interesting men of his age. Throughout his fascinating life, he served not only as a bricklayer but also a soldier, an adventurer, an actor, a poet, and a playwright. The breadth of his experiences, acquaintances, friends, and enemies was legendary, and his literary canon is equally as diverse. The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia covers in detail the works, life, and times of this seminal figure of the English Renaissance. The cross-referenced entries include summaries of all Jonson’s plays, masques, and entertainments, as well as sketches of Jonson’s friends, enemies, patrons, disciples, actors, and fellow writers. In addition, the book identifies historical figures, mythological characters, and classical authors, as well as Jonson’s contemporaries and London place names mentioned in the works. Individuals who danced or participated in the masques and entertainments or tournaments for which Jonson wrote speeches are noted, as are the main actors known to have acted in the plays. All major scholars—from Jonson’s own day until the twenty-first century—who have commented on Jonson or his works are also included. An extensive bibliography completes this invaluable scholarly reference tool. Because of Jonson’s centrality to—and influence in and beyond—his age, this encyclopedia provides a dynamic, unparalleled vision of the English Renaissance literary scene. Capturing the depth and breadth of Jonson’s understanding of early Modern England, The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia will be especially useful for students, librarians, and academics interested in the literary and cultural scene from 1500 to 1650.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. In his Introduction to this second edition of As You Like It, its editor, Michael Hattaway accounts for what makes this popular play both innocent and dangerous. In performance it can appear bright or sombre: a feast of language and a delight for comic actors, or a risk-taking exploration of gender roles. This edition includes a new section on recent critical interpretations and dramatic productions of the play as well as an appendix on an early court performance of As You Like It in 1599. Commentary on the play's language, an updated reading list and an account of the play in performance are also included.

Book Volpone Or the Fox

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ben Jonson
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780719030932
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Volpone Or the Fox written by Ben Jonson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most thoroughly investigated edition of Volpone to date, based on a wider collation of the 1607 quarto and 1616 folio versions than was previously possible. It calls into question several accepted textual conclusions. The introduction sets Volpone in the context of Jonson’s career at the time of writing and introduces new material on its relation to the Reynard beast epic and the commedia dell’ arte. Ambiguities in the play are discussed with reference to two Renaissance perversions of the myth of the Golden Age. Particular attention is paid to the rhythmic effects of the play in performance, especially interweavings of the main plot and subplot. Fresh suggestions are made about the play’s opening and its controversial conclusion in the light of experiments that have been made in performance since Volpone ’s stage revival in 1921. The modernized text is accompanied by full commentary, notes and illustrations. The appendices include a discussion by John Cutts of the original music, passages translated from the original sources and analogues, and a full record of the play’s modern stage history, its many adaptations, and its transformations into opera, musical comedy, film and television.

Book Ben Jonson s Antimasques

Download or read book Ben Jonson s Antimasques written by Lesley Mickel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume examines how under the patronage of James I and then Charles I, Ben Jonson wrote no less than 28 court masques. Paying particular attention to the antimasque, Lesley Mickel discusses in detail those court entertainments which contributed significantly to the genre's evolution and development. Her approach is innovative in that she examines these court entertainments in relation to Jonson's poetry and dramatic works. This reveals some idea of the way in which Jonson perceived the relationship between satire and panegyric, as well as highlighting the related, if oppositional, views of state power which he expresses in the Roman plays and in the masques.
