Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Academic Algebra The favor with which the Eaton and Bradbury's Mathematical Series has been received has encouraged the authors to prepare this book. It is designed to meet the demand for a fuller treatment of Factoring, for more numerous examples for practice, and for the more advanced work now required in our best High Schools and Academies, and for admission to many of the Colleges. In all the subjects treated the exercises have been carefully graded to lead the student from the simple to the more difficult. Special attention is invited to the treatment of Positive and Negative Numbers in Chapter II., of Addition and Subtraction as a single topic, as well as Multiplication and Division, in both Integral and Fractional Numbers; to the arrangement of the equations in Elimination; to the interpretation of negative results, and of the forms, -, and -; and to the treatment of Affected Quadratic Equations. Although a work on Mathematics has a natural order for the development of topics, yet this may not be the best order for the pupil. Book excerpt: College Algebra provides a comprehensive exploration of algebraic principles and meets scope and sequence requirements for a typical introductory algebra course. The modular approach and richness of content ensure that the book meets the needs of a variety of courses. College Algebra offers a wealth of examples with detailed, conceptual explanations, building a strong foundation in the material before asking students to apply what they've learned. Coverage and Scope In determining the concepts, skills, and topics to cover, we engaged dozens of highly experienced instructors with a range of student audiences. The resulting scope and sequence proceeds logically while allowing for a significant amount of flexibility in instruction. Chapters 1 and 2 provide both a review and foundation for study of Functions that begins in Chapter 3. The authors recognize that while some institutions may find this material a prerequisite, other institutions have told us that they have a cohort that need the prerequisite skills built into the course. Chapter 1: Prerequisites Chapter 2: Equations and Inequalities Chapters 3-6: The Algebraic Functions Chapter 3: Functions Chapter 4: Linear Functions Chapter 5: Polynomial and Rational Functions Chapter 6: Exponential and Logarithm Functions Chapters 7-9: Further Study in College Algebra Chapter 7: Systems of Equations and Inequalities Chapter 8: Analytic Geometry Chapter 9: Sequences, Probability and Counting Theory

Book excerpt: A New York Times–bestselling author looks at mathematics education in America—when it’s worthwhile, and when it’s not. Why do we inflict a full menu of mathematics—algebra, geometry, trigonometry, even calculus—on all young Americans, regardless of their interests or aptitudes? While Andrew Hacker has been a professor of mathematics himself, and extols the glories of the subject, he also questions some widely held assumptions in this thought-provoking and practical-minded book. Does advanced math really broaden our minds? Is mastery of azimuths and asymptotes needed for success in most jobs? Should the entire Common Core syllabus be required of every student? Hacker worries that our nation’s current frenzied emphasis on STEM is diverting attention from other pursuits and even subverting the spirit of the country. Here, he shows how mandating math for everyone prevents other talents from being developed and acts as an irrational barrier to graduation and careers. He proposes alternatives, including teaching facility with figures, quantitative reasoning, and understanding statistics. Expanding upon the author’s viral New York Times op-ed, The Math Myth is sure to spark a heated and needed national conversation—not just about mathematics but about the kind of people and society we want to be. “Hacker’s accessible arguments offer plenty to think about and should serve as a clarion call to students, parents, and educators who decry the one-size-fits-all approach to schooling.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Book The Algebra Miracle The True Story of a High Poverty School s Triumph in the Age of Accountability

Download or read book The Algebra Miracle The True Story of a High Poverty School s Triumph in the Age of Accountability written by Stuart Alan Singer and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A miracle is defined as a highly improbable or extraordinary accomplishment. The story of the Algebra program at JEB Stuart High School in Fairfax, Virginia, qualifies for such a designation. Over a period of fifteen years, a series of ambitious, no-cost innovations which challenged the prevailing status quo in math education led to a set of academic accomplishments that were indeed improbable and extraordinary. This miracle was achieved by a high-poverty, ethnically diverse student body that was unique at the time but is now representative of schools found throughout the U.S. For everyone touched by education from parents and students to teachers and administrators, "The Algebra Miracle" will provide insights into the complexity of finding a low-cost formula for academic success in the tight budgetary times of the 21st century. This story serves as a model of what can be accomplished when a dedicated school staff commits its time, energy and creativity to the needs of their students.

Download or read book Approaches to Algebra written by N. Bednarz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Greek geometry, there is an arithmetic of magnitudes in which, in terms of numbers, only integers are involved. This theory of measure is limited to exact measure. Operations on magnitudes cannot be actually numerically calculated, except if those magnitudes are exactly measured by a certain unit. The theory of proportions does not have access to such operations. It cannot be seen as an "arithmetic" of ratios. Even if Euclidean geometry is done in a highly theoretical context, its axioms are essentially semantic. This is contrary to Mahoney's second characteristic. This cannot be said of the theory of proportions, which is less semantic. Only synthetic proofs are considered rigorous in Greek geometry. Arithmetic reasoning is also synthetic, going from the known to the unknown. Finally, analysis is an approach to geometrical problems that has some algebraic characteristics and involves a method for solving problems that is different from the arithmetical approach. 3. GEOMETRIC PROOFS OF ALGEBRAIC RULES Until the second half of the 19th century, Euclid's Elements was considered a model of a mathematical theory. This may be one reason why geometry was used by algebraists as a tool to demonstrate the accuracy of rules otherwise given as numerical algorithms. It may also be that geometry was one way to represent general reasoning without involving specific magnitudes. To go a bit deeper into this, here are three geometric proofs of algebraic rules, the frrst by Al-Khwarizmi, the other two by Cardano.
