Christian relics such as the Holy Grail, the True Cross, and the Lance of Longinus are also the source of limitless controversy. Such items have incited people to bloodshed and, some say, have been a source of miracles. Relics inspire fear and hope among the faithful and yet are a perennial target for skeptics, both secular and Christian. To research the authenticity of numerous Christian relics, Joe Nickell takes a scientific approach to a field of study all too often tainted by premature conclusions. In this volume, Nickell investigates such renowned relics as the Shroud of Turin, the multiple heads of John the Baptist, and the supposedly incorruptible corpses of saints, first examining the available evidence and documented history of each item. From accounts of true believers to the testimony of the relics’ alleged fabricators, Nickell then presents all sides of each story, allowing the evidence to speak for itself. For each relic, Nickell evaluates both the corroborating and contradictory bodies of evidence and explores whether the relic and attributed miracles can be reconstructed. Radiocarbon dating and tests to determine the validity of substances such as blood or patina indicate a variety of possible origins. Book excerpt: The Absorption Of The Christ Through Poetry emerged as a result of my contemplating the profound intricacy of the novel that I wrote in 2010, entitled The Absorption Of The Christ. Through poetic means, I summarize in simple brevity, if you will, my convictions relative to the Christ consciousness which I believe to be the true nature of man. I decided to give the reader another version of the novel, another means of grasping or exploring what I deem as the truth. That is to say, God is on earth in the outpicturing of physical, human form. My premise that God is all that exists is also the same theme as presented in my novel. This poetic delivery of my confessions and beliefs may enlighten some readers after having read the novel and may encourage others to utilize the poems as a means to enhance their understanding of the novel. Some may prefer one or the other or both. Of course, the ultimate choice is left up to the reader. Some enjoy novels because they are more detailed and to the point while others opt to cut to the chase to avoid lengthy storytelling and long, drawn-out stories of epic proportions. However, both of these productions may be employed in conjunction with each other for total comprehension. Both accounts express the consciousness of a narcoleptic who rationalizes that the consciousness of God is endlessly in expression and that whatever is believed by the world exists in that consciousness alone. Please note that all of the poems in question are comprised of rhythm and rhyme but are presented in the form of sentences with the flavor of succinct essays which have their stories to tell. Please remember that as a reader of this material, your consciousness will dictate the manner in which the material is received. So, take the journey and know that you are definitely in charge of the direction that you choose. Further, when you are done with your reading, observe the changes within.

Jacobs turns to an unexpected symbol—the stereotypical mark of the Jewish covenant on the body of the Christian savior—to explore how and why we think about difference and identity in early Christianity. Jacobs explores the subject of Christ's circumcision in texts dating from the first through seventh centuries of the Common Era. Using a diverse toolkit of approaches, including the psychoanalytic, postcolonial, and poststructuralist, he posits that while seeming to desire fixed borders and a clear distinction between self (Christian) and other (Jew, pagan, and heretic), early Christians consistently blurred and destabilized their own religious boundaries. He further argues that in this doubled approach to others, Christians mimicked the imperial discourse of the Roman Empire, which exerted its power through the management, not the erasure, of difference. For Jacobs, the circumcision of Christ vividly illustrates a deep-seated Christian duality: the fear of and longing for an other, at once reviled and internalized. From his earliest appearance in the Gospel of Luke to the full-blown Feast of the Divine Circumcision in the medieval period, Christ circumcised represents a new way of imagining Christians and their creation of a new religious culture.

Born around 1541, Domenikos Theotokopoulos began his career as an icon painter on the island of Crete. He is best known, under the name “El Greco,” for the works he created while in Spain, paintings that have provoked both rapt admiration and scornful disapproval since his death in 1614. But the nearly ten years he spent in Venice and Rome, from 1567 to 1576, have remained underexplored until now.
