Book excerpt: The Absolution is the third installment in Queen of Icelandic crime fiction Yrsa Sigurdardóttir’s series about the psychologist Freyja and the police officer Huldar. The police find out about the crime the way everyone does: on Snapchat. The video shows a terrified young woman begging for forgiveness. When her body is found, it is marked with a number “2”. Detective Huldar joins the investigation, bringing child psychologist Freyja on board to help question the murdered teenager's friends. Soon, they uncover that Stella was far from the angel people claim, but who could have hated her enough to kill? Then another teenager goes missing, more clips are sent to social media, and the body with a “3” is found. Freyja and Huldar can agree on two things at least: the truth is far from simple. The killer is not done yet. And is there an undiscovered body carrying the number “1” out there?

Book excerpt: Jeanie thinks she was to blame for the sexual assault she suffered in college—and she’d do anything to keep her old-school Catholic family from finding out about the resulting pregnancy, as well as what she did to conceal it. Years have passed since the assault, and Jeanie’s husband, Greg, still thinks she’s the seemingly innocent girl he married in a rush to spite his controlling mother. It’s the height of the Seattle dot-com boom, and he’s too busy cashing in his stock options to pay attention to his wife. He isn’t aware of Jeanie’s lingering shame and guilt, or that she married him in the desperate hope that devoting herself to marriage and motherhood would somehow absolve her from the sins in her past. Their hidden agendas collide when Greg discovers evidence of Jeanie’s long-ago pregnancy. As she confesses the details of that drunken night with her married professor, Greg’s pristine image of her is blown. His shock deepens into violent fury, and Jeanie realizes she needs to leave him—but Greg won’t let her go. He’s up for a big promotion, and he’s not about to let her ruin his reputation by walking out on him. He’ll resort to blackmail if necessary. Or worse.

Book Absolution A Palestinian Israeli Love Story

Download or read book Absolution A Palestinian Israeli Love Story written by R. F. Georgy and published by Parthenon Books. This book was released on 2014 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It used to be a universally accepted axiom that the Palestinian Israeli conflict is an intractable and immovable impasse of epic proportion. Its Sisyphean nature cemented its reputation as an insoluble focal point of hatred and endless violence. Such universal truths, of course, derive their power and resonance from within the constraints of geography, ideology, and the construction of the imagination that is always trapped under the feeble nature of temporal movement. One can certainly say that Jewish history is filled with the grotesquery of blind hatred; that Jews were singularly reduced to an alienated other. Their disjointed and fractured identity was preserved only by the portability of a religion that would help them survive the darkest hours. But fate is not without irony, as the Palestinians were forced to accept the collective guilt of all those who committed unspeakable acts against the Jews. The Palestinians had to endure the systematic dispossession of their land and loss of identity. They were forced to accept defeat as a bitter reminder of their subaltern status in a world of proud nation states. Palestinians and Israelis were connected by a fatalistic dialectic, whose movement was punctuated by violence and directed towards an apocalyptic conclusion. One might argue that this dialectic enveloped a land, mythical and actual, spiritual yet earth-bound, ancient yet very much poised towards unfolding actualities. This land conjures images of return and redemptive possibilities. Palestine and Israel are two strands intertwined in our collective imagination. They are linguistically exclusive and yet reference a singular place. We are embarking on a peaceful resolution to a conflict that has left deep psychological scars. Of course, peace is not determined by the signage of treaties or the wishes of leaders. Peace is not a discrete event; rather it is a renewable proposition, filled with affirmations designed to mitigate against the collective distrust of two people who knew little beyond hatred, suspicion, blame and counter blame, intellectual gamesmanship, fear, paranoia, historical necessity, retribution, and a host of other deeply engrained emotional projections that are constantly lurking beneath the surface. -Prologue Absolution is a love story unlike any other. It is a love that transcends the oceanic chasms that have come to define one of the most intractable conflicts in modern history. It is the year 2018 and Israel's Prime Minister, Avi Eban, is in Oslo to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. One year earlier, on the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, Israel and the Palestinians forged a peace that resulted in the creation of Palestine. What the world did not know was the story behind the peace- a story of hope and redemptive possibilities.

Via the power of resurrected faith, forgiveness, and his unique metaphorical perspective on the management and interaction of his “life tanks,” author Paul Bristol has discovered the path to his “middle lane of inner peace.” By breaking the destructive cycle of being comfortable with discomfort and in changing how life events are interpreted and processed, one can begin the construction of a new life narrative that lies in wait to help master, medication-free, that “dance with the ghost.” “It’s not about your past and the players who are riding on your “team bus,” but about who you choose to put behind the wheel each and every day that determines your life course. Through faith and absolute, entrenched forgiveness, there is no obstacle that you cannot conquer” (Paul Bristol, The Absolution Tap).

Book excerpt: In his spellbinding first novel, acclaimed Icelandic author Olaf Olafsson takes us inside the mind of a man haunted by the crime he willed half a century earlier. Expatriate businessman Peter Peterson left behind the trappings of a seemingly charmed life: a vast fortune, two children, and a stately Park Avenue address. But he also left behind another legacy: a secret from long ago that shadowed his accomplishments and estranged him from his loved ones—a crime of passion, committed in the throes of unrequited love, that became a lifetime’s burden. Yet when Peter is forced to confront the consequences of his actions, an unexpected turn of events shakes the very foundation of his past. Spanning a boyhood in Iceland to the Nazi occupation of Denmark to modern-day Manhattan, Absolution calls up Dostoevsky and Ibsen as it masterfully plumbs the darkest corners of a sinister mind and a wounded heart.

Book The Absolution of Roberto Acestes Laing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p>*A Best Book of 2014 —Flavorwire, Entropy Magazine, Book Riot "The novel is an attempt to write about film through fiction, engaging both art forms at once with the analytic mind of the academic and the imagination of the storyteller. In the process, Rombes found the freedom of fiction pushing him towards a new type of writing. For the reader, there is little we can know for sure, but this is what makes the book so exciting." —Irish Times Synopsis In the mid-'90s a rare-film librarian at a state university in Pennsylvania mysteriously burned his entire stockpile of film canisters and disappeared. Roberto Acestes Laing was highly regarded by acclaimed directors around the globe for his keen eye, appreciation for eccentricity, and creativity in interpretation. Unsure at first whether Laing is a pseudonym or some sort of Hollywood boogeyman, a journalist manages to track the forgotten man down to a motel on the fringe of the Wisconsin wilds. Laing agrees to speak with the journalist, but only through the lens of the cinema. What ensues is an atmospheric, cryptic extrapolation of movies and how they intertwine with life, and the forgotten films that curse the lost librarian still.

Book excerpt: The Vietnam War opens the door for countless volumes of personal memoirs from the fighting men who waged it. Most are well crafted by the men who never thought they would write a book, especially one about Vietnam. Absolution is an exceptional work of one man's journey across those Asian battlefields in 1967 and 1968. Author Charles J. Boyle, takes you smack into the fighting from the first page of this authentic history and leaves you breathless all the way to the end. His descriptions of battle, how they were won or lost, and the men who fought them are spine chilling. Absolution is not just a story of the horror of war in Vietnam, but it is also one of love... love and admiration for the men who fought it. Thousands of young men, most of them teenagers, were thrust into the barbarity of that Asian civil war inadequately trained and initially armed with a defective weapon. In Vietnam, the foot soldier honed his "killing skills" by instinct and imagination. Out of Vietnam emerged a legion of men, struggling with an even greater battle, personal and private. They suffered a moral conflict that only those who have taken another life can comprehend. Then, undermining their gallant service in Vietnam, a powerful and biased news media created a myth that quickly spread across America. They said that the Vietnam-era soldier was a misfit; a perverse example of a military machine gone awry, wreaking havoc upon innocent civilians. Soon after the fighting was done in Vietnam, prominent news broadcasters coined a new phrase: "They only war we ever lost," they said. They want you to believe that the soldier lost the war, when, in fact, he lost only his youth, his innocence and sadly, many of his friends. Absolution will take you through that aftermath, offer solutions for the Post Traumatic Stress that these soldiers suffered, and will prove to you that these Vietnam Veterans were some of the finest soldiers that ever served America. Absolution is a remarkable resurrection of the Vietnam battlefield, told by an author who has "been there." It is an extraordinary and moving story, accurately portrayed, with all the valor, pain, and sacrifice that distinguished Vietnam from other wars. It is superb history and great reading. It will tear at your heart and make you want to cry.

Book excerpt: "Highly literate and entirely engrossing. One of the year's best literary thrillers." —The Washington Post It's twenty years since police detective Alan McAlpine has set foot in Patrickhill Station—and more than twenty years since he fell forever in love with the mute, faceless woman he called Anna as she lay dying in Glasgow's Western Infirmary. Daily he'd watched over her, and they had begun to communicate with each other, she by moving her wounded fingers. Her fingers could not tell the sad, unseasoned police cadet her name, however, or name for him the father of her newborn baby girl or identify the assailants who had flung the acid in her once incomparably beautiful face. Or tell him how she'd smuggled a cache of uncut diamonds into Scotland. Now McAlpine is back in Patrickhill, where he's been summoned to head up the investigation of a disturbing murder case. Two women—their arms outstretched, their legs together and feet crossed at the ankle—have already died at the hands of a man the press has tagged the Crucifixion Killer. With crimes in the present continually detouring both McAlpine and the elusive killer he pursues into an unredeemed past, the mystery in this steely, piercing psychological thriller is as gripping as its twists are surprising. And absolution proves to be extreme. Praise for CARO RAMSAY "While fellow-Scot Ian Rankin's narrative is unruly, Ramsay's is stately. It works because the story she tells is highly literate and entirely engrossing. McAlpine's passion leads the novel to a conclusion as powerful as it is unexpected. Absolution is among the year's best literary thrillers.”—Patrick Anderson, The Washington Post "Let me recommend a first novel by Caro Ramsay, a Scottish author who is able to write scenes of heartbreaking tenderness nestled amid evocations of such grotesque violence that it is difficult to imagine that they can coexist as such sublime interlocking pieces of the whole. A noir police novel, like those by fellow Scottish author Ian Rankin, but with deeper psychological exploration, Absolution marks the beginning of what certainly will be a major career."—Otto Penzler, New York Sun
