Book The Absolute Relations of Time and Space Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Absolute Relations of Time and Space Classic Reprint written by A. A. Robb and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absolute Relations of Time and Space At the meeting of the British Association in 1902, Lord Rayleigh gave a paper entitled "Does motion through the ether cause double refraction?" in which he described some experiments which seemed to indicate that the answer was in the negative. I recollect that on this occasion Professor Larmor was asked whether he would expect any such effect and he replied that he did not expect any. In the discussion which followed reference was made to the null results of all attempts to detect uniform motion through the ether and to the way in which things seemed to conspire together to give these null results. The impression made on me by this discussion was: that in order properly to understand what happened, it would be necessary to be quite clear as to what we mean by equality of lengths, etc., and I decided that I should try at some future time to carry out an analysis of this subject. I am not certain that I had not some idea of doing this even before the British Association meeting, but in any case, the inspiration came from Sir Joseph Larmor, either at this meeting or on some previous occasion while attending his lectures. Some years later I proceeded to try to carry out this idea, and while-engaged in endeavouring to solve the problem, I heard for the first time of Einstein's work. From the first I felt that Einstein's standpoint and method of treatment were unsatisfactory, though his mathematical transformations might be sound enough, and I decided to proceed in my own way in search of a suitable basis for a theory. In particular I felt strongly repelled by the idea that events could be simultaneous to one person and not simultaneous to another; which was one of Einstein's chief contentions. This seemed to destroy all sense of the reality of the external world and to leave the physical universe no better than a dream, or rather, a nightmare. Book excerpt: In my smaller book, "The Absolute Relations of Time and Space," I gave an abbreviated account of this work and added an appendix showing how the various complicated geometries which are treated of in Einstein's generalized relativity could be obtained by means of a modified measure of interval. However, most relativists have been too busily engaged in praising Einstein to spare the time to go into my work. One result of this has been that, by taking the idea of measurement as the fundamental thing, a very large number, if not the majority, of relativists have fallen into the very serious error of asserting that the length of what they call a "world-line " is a minimum between any two points of it. In my "Theory of Time and Space "I showed (p. 360) that this is not correct. Finding that a number of writers were making this mistake, I wrote a letter which appeared in Nature (February 5, 1920, p. 599) in which I invited attention to this matter and pointed out that in what I called "inertia lines '' the length, so far from being a minimum, was actually a maximum in the mathematical sense; while, in what I called "separation lines" the length was neither a maximum nor a minimum. In this letter I gave actual numerical examples to illustrate these points. I invited attention to the matter again in my "Absolute Relations of Time and Space" (p. 71), published in 1920. In spite of these efforts of mine, I again find this blunder cropping up in works published this year. Now it seems to me that it is a very important point since, in ordinary geometry, there is no such thing as a "longest" line joining two points. The idea would, I think, be apt to cause bewilderment in the mind of a person meeting it for the first time, unless it were properly presented to him. The idea of a "straight line" which was neither a maximum nor a minimum would, I fancy, cause even greater bewilderment, and he would wish to know how such lines were to be defined. In Einstein's generalized relativity, the element of interval is taken as a starting-point, although the idea of an interval in the minds of many writers is so obscure that they ascribe a minimum property to it which it does not possess. Although I have tried so often to impress on relativists that the ordinary method of treating space-time theory is unsatisfactory, I propose to make one more attempt to show that the measurement of intervals is not the simple thing that is so often supposed. Let us consider the simple time-space theory in which the length of an element ds of what I call a "separation line" is given by the formula: ds2 = dx2 + dy2 + dz2 - dt2. Let O be the origin of co-ordinates and let P be any point on the axis of x, at a distance l from O, measured, say, in the positive direction. Let F(x) be any arbitrary differentiable function of x which is continuous and single valued, and which is equal to zero for x = O and for x = l. Now consider the space-time curve the equations of which are: y = t = F(x), 2 = O. It is evident that this curve passes through O and P. But now we have dy=dt, dz=o ds2=dx2 and so on.Thus we have ds=dx, so the length measured along the space-time curve from O to P is equal to the length of O to P measured directly along the axis of x. That is, it i equal to l. Thus a space-time curve the equation of which contain an arbitrary function can have the same length between two points as the direct length measured between those two points. -Nature, Volume 110 [1922]

Book A Theory of Time and Space Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Theory of Time and Space Classic Reprint written by Alfred Arthur Robb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Time and Space HE introduction to the present volume was first published in in substantially the form here reproduced. The plan there outlined is here carried out in detail, and, although much remains to be done along similar lines, yet the present work is fairly complete in itself. The special object here aimed at has been to Show that spacial relations may be analyzed in terms of the time relations of before and after, and the demonstration of this thesis has been carried out up to the stage of introducing coordinates, leaving further developments for a future volume. The present work is the outcome of an endeavour to get rid of certain obscurities in connection with some of the fundamental parts of Physical Science. Thus the meaning ordinarily attached to the equality of time intervals. And of lengths, although sufficiently precise for the ordinary purposes of daily life, will yet be found to be somewhat vague when examined more closely. Again, although the idea of acceleration plays such an important part in Dynamics, yet, so far as the writer is aware, no satisfactory definition has hitherto been given of what we mean when we say that a particle is unaccelerated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eppur Si Muove: Axiomatics, Fundamentals and Experimental Verification of the Absolute Space-Time Theory When living in Bulgaria (before September I frequently tried but in vain to establish a written contact with Acad. A. D. Sakharov and to send him eppur Sl muove via many channels. As the book had to ap pear, I wrote the above foreword and gave it to a girl-friend of mine, a well-known physicist and a Jewess still living behind the curtain, who, put ting her scientific career at risk, decided to visit Sakharov in Moscow. Her oral message (july 1977) was that Sakharov is highly sympathetic wih my theory and'will think about the matter of the foreword. As I could not te ceive his final consent, I published the book with the draft preface. Later Acad. Sakharov distanced from my theory (see the whole story narrated in detail in nature, 271, 296 and 272, 200 Sakharov has given only verbal opinions on my theory which are highly contradictory (as reported via the press or communicated to me). After the apearance of eppur SI muove, at great personal risk, I visited Sakharov in Moscow flying from Brussels (february l978). He said me the following: The problems raised by my theory and the conclusions to which it leads are so crucial and im portant for physics that he does not dare to take a stand-point. On the other hand, he has no time to study the theory and to analyse the experi ments in detail, as he is dedicating all his time to social and moral activities. I think that a written statement by Sakharov (positive or negative) on my theory (now when he has more time for scientific work in Gor'ki) will be decisive for the speedy restoration of absolute space. Absolute space time has already obtained such a firm experimental confirmation that for its acceptance one needs one thing only: an open and wide discussion. For this reason l organize on the 8 - ll July l982 in Genoa the International Conference on space-time Absoluteness (lcsta) which was prohibited by the Bulgarian government in 1977. I invite the space-time specialists all over the world to publish papers before the conference and to participate at the conference, where absolute freedom will be given to any stand-point. Two Nobel-prize-winners, Prof. Wigner and Prof. Salam, have already written me about their interest to visit the conference. If icsta-i9sz will be representative, then the gr-lo Conference in Venice (july 1983) will meet on a firm and stable absolute ground, and the two old rivals, Genoa and Venice, will concur for the prospect of science. Book Einstein and the Changing Worldviews of Physics

Download or read book Einstein and the Changing Worldviews of Physics written by Christoph Lehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews conceptual conflicts at the foundations of physics now and in the past century. The focus is on the conditions and consequences of Einstein’s pathbreaking achievements that sealed the decline of the classical notions of space, time, radiation, and matter, and resulted in the theory of relativity. Particular attention is paid to the implications of conceptual conflicts for scientific views of the world at large, thus providing the basis for a comparison of the demise of the mechanical worldview at the turn of the 20th century with the challenges presented by cosmology at the turn of the 21st century. Throughout the work, Einstein’s contributions are not seen in isolation but instead set into the wider intellectual context of dealing with the problem of gravitation in the twilight of classical physics; the investigation of the historical development is carried out with a number of epistemological questions in mind, concerning, in particular, the transformation process of knowledge associated with the changing worldviews of physics.

If the present is durationless, have we any reason to think that our now is the interface between past and future? Is space just nothingness, or is it an entity in its own right? Is there a spatial structure independent of things in space? Are objects separated by spatial relations, although space doesn't exist?

Book Metaphysics The Basics

Download or read book Metaphysics The Basics written by Michael Rea and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysics: The Basics is a concise and engaging introduction to the philosophical study of the world and universe in which we live. Concerned with questions about reality, existence, time, identity and change, metaphysics has long fascinated people but to the uninitiated some of the issues and problems can appear very complex. In this lively and lucid book, Michael Rea examines and explains key questions in the study of metaphysics such as: • Can two things be in the same place at the same time? • Do creatures of fiction exist? • Are human beings free? • Is time travel possible? • Is there just one world or many worlds? With a glossary of key terms and suggestions for further reading, the book considers key philosophical arguments around Metaphysics, making this an ideal starting point for anyone seeking a full introduction to the debates both within and about metaphysics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume announces a new era in the philosophy of God. Many of its contributions work to create stronger links between the philosophy of God, on the one hand, and mathematics or metamathematics, on the other hand. It is about not only the possibilities of applying mathematics or metamathematics to questions about God, but also the reverse question: Does the philosophy of God have anything to offer mathematics or metamathematics? The remaining contributions tackle stereotypes in the philosophy of religion. The volume includes 35 contributions. It is divided into nine parts: 1. Who Created the Concept of God; 2. Omniscience, Omnipotence, Timelessness and Spacelessness of God; 3. God and Perfect Goodness, Perfect Beauty, Perfect Freedom; 4. God, Fundamentality and Creation of All Else; 5. Simplicity and Ineffability of God; 6. God, Necessity and Abstract Objects; 7. God, Infinity, and Pascal’s Wager; 8. God and (Meta-)Mathematics; and 9. God and Mind.

Book Expanding Humanitys Vision Of God

Download or read book Expanding Humanitys Vision Of God written by Robert Herrmann and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has our understanding of our world and our place in the universe changed in recent decades through the momentous discoveries of science? Do recent developments in the philosophy of science, which place limitations on scientific knowing, provide a more level playing field? This collection of essays and sermons, which have not been readily available before, address these thought-provoking questions. The John Templeton Foundation sponsored an essay and sermon contest to convey an expanded vision of God, one that is informed by recent discoveries of science on the nature of the universe and the place we have in the world. These selections are the winners of that competition. The book is divided into three sections: “Contemporary Science Raising Theological Questions,” “New Visions of Theology,” and “Historical and Philosophical Perspectives on the Science-Religion Dialogue.” The essays cover such areas as physics, theology, cosmology, origins, and artificial intelligence. “There is another way to conceive our life together. There is another way to conceive of our life in God, but it requires a different worldview—not a clockwork universe in which individuals function as discrete springs and gears, but one that looks more like a luminous web, in which the whole is far more than the parts. In this universe, there is no such thing as an individual apart from his or her relationships. Every interaction—between people and people, between people and things, between things and things—changes the face of history. Life on earth cannot be reduced to four sure-fire rules. It is an ever-unfolding mystery that defies precise prediction. Meanwhile, in this universe, there is no such thing as 'parts‚' The whole is the fundamental unit of reality.” —Barbara Brown Taylor, “Physics and Faith,”

Download or read book Time Space Stars Man written by Michael Mark Woolfson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three greatest scientific mysteries, which remain poorly understood, are the origin of the universe, the origin of life and the development of consciousness. This book describes the processes preceding the Big Bang, the creation of matter, the concentration of that matter into stars and planets, the development of simple life forms and the theory of evolution that has given higher life forms, including mankind. There are many popular and excellent science books that present various aspects of science. However, this book follows a narrow scientific pathway from the Big Bang to mankind, and depicts the causal relationship between each step and the next. The science covered will be enough to satisfy most readers. Many important areas of science are dealt with, and these include cosmology, particle physics, atomic physics, galaxy and star formation, planet formation and aspects of evolution. The necessary science is described in a narrative form that general-interest readers should understand, without the use of equations or formulae. This 2nd edition includes several updates on the subjects that form the pillars of this book. They are: cosmology and astronomy, the features and formation of the solar system, the origin of life, and genetics and evolution. This book will appeal to readers with an interest in biology and those curious about the origins of the universe.
