Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absolute Measurement of Inductance It occurred to us that a modification of the method quoted above from Gray would be as well adapted to precision measurements as any other proposed. Instead of using the electrometer to measure the difference of potential at the terminals of the inductive coil and of a fixed resistance R, we vary the resistance R until the difference of potential at its terminals is equal to that at the terminals of the308a. Book Construction and Calculation of Absolute Standards of Inductance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Construction and Calculation of Absolute Standards of Inductance Classic Reprint written by J. G. Coffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Construction and Calculation of Absolute Standards of Inductance The axial length of the windings was measured by means of a Fuess cathetometer fitted with a micrometer microscope, the cylinder being placed on end. The cathetometer was movable about its own axis and a standard meter bar of the Societe Genevoise was placed so that by a slight turning of the axis the bar was brought into the field of view. To make sure that any differences in focus might not affect the measurements the micrometer was calibrated at every reading. As the last turns of wire were so close to the guiding rims that they could not conveniently be observed, readings were taken at noted wires near the ends and also at the windings between the sep arate coils into which the total coil was divided, settings being made on a fine German silver wire laid in the grooves between adjacent wires. The total number of turns being known, the total length of wire could easily be calculated. The readings were taken along six teen different generators of the cylinder. The lengths of the sub divisions were determined with about the same absolute deviation as the total length. The wire was calipered with a Brown Sharpe wire gauge while being wound on the cylinder. The insulation being hard enamel it was assumed not to be compressed by the ten sion of the wire against the marble. The diameter of the wire, as calculated from the length measurements, came out smaller than the gauge measurements, which means that the wire stretched slightly while being laid on. The computed value of the diameter of the wire is used in the calculations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Absolute Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism To the late Mr. E. B. Rosa and his colleagues of the physical staff of the Bureau of Standards at Washington I am under many Obligations. They tested and used my suggestions as to standards and formulae of inductance, and constructed an accurate electrodynamometer of the special dimensions recommended in my Phil. Mag. Paper of 1892, and in the First Edition of this book. They have carried in their writings the investigation of the accuracy of formulae, and the allowance for errors of different kinds, to a high pitch of perfection. Their numerical comparison of formulae and their exact computation of the constants of apparatus have not been such as to attract popular attention and applause, but it has been none the less of enormous value to scientific progress. This merit it has in common with the whole work of the British Association Committee on Electrical Standards and of all those scientific men who have laboured at the subject of absolute electrical measurement. This task of founding a system of absolute measure ments was forced upon science by applications to submarine telegraphy, and it is not too much to say that without such a system not one of the immense and varied range of practical applications could ever have been made. I am indebted to my friend and former pupil, Professor E. Taylor Jones, who has made an elaborate theoretical and experimental study of the induction coil, and is an acknowledged authority on that subject, for the account of the action of such apparatus, which appears in Appendix I. The Table of Contents and the Index have been constructed by my eldest daughter, to whose unfailing patience and ready help as amanuensis I have had continually to turn. I wish finally to acknowledge the care of the readers and compositors of the University Press, which, by comparison of references, and other wise, has saved the text from many inconsistencies, and increased its accuracy. Book The Measurement of the Inductances of Resistance Coils Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Measurement of the Inductances of Resistance Coils Classic Reprint written by Frederick W. Grover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Measurement of the Inductances of Resistance Coils Two standards of I - ohm resistance were prepared, both of manganin wire mm in diameter, the wire in one being arranged in a loop with the two legs I cm apart, while in the other it was bent into a circle of cm radius with a. Gap of cm between the ends. Each standard was provided with binding posts, in one case set perpendicular to the plane of the parallel wires, and in the other perpendicular to the plane of the circle. The self inductance of the binding posts was calculated and the mutual inductance with respect to the wire was assumed to be negligible. The inductances were calculated, giving the following values: Parallel wires. Circle. 279 437 8 End 22 Gap correction 4 Binding posts 4 Binding posts 291 cm 419 cm. Book A New Method for the Absolute Measurement of Electric Quantity Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Method for the Absolute Measurement of Electric Quantity Classic Reprint written by Burton Mccollum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method for the Absolute Measurement of Electric Quantity In the absolute measurement of current two classes of methods are available which are capable of considerable accuracy, viz, electrodynamometer methods, in which the torque exerted between a fixed and a movable coil is measured and the current in the coils calculated from this measured torque and the known dimensions of the coil; and current balances, in which the force exerted between two coils carrying the current to be measured is balanced against a known weight and the current calculated from the weight and previously determined constants of the coils. By the latter form of apparatus measurements of current have been made in which a higher degree of accuracy has been attained than with the first-named type. There are, however, numerous possible sources of error in the use of the current balance, and, although most of these can be made small individually, they may on account of their number, introduce uncertainty in the result. The ordinary electrodynamometer methods as well as the current balance require in effect two separate experiments, the first for the determination of the value of the current in terms of a torque or force, and the second for the recording of this current in terms of the electro-chemical equivalent of silver or of a resistance and standard cell. This second experiment may introduce additional possibilities of error, owing to variations in the strength of the current or the voltage of the standard cell, errors in the resistances of the potentiometer circuits and thermo-electromotive forces in the galvanometer and potentiometer circuits, etc., and while these errors can be made small, still their possible presence increases the difficulties of the measurements. Although the current balance is capable of yielding a high degree of accuracy, it is not desirable to depend on the value given by a single type of apparatus, even though the experiments may be repeated with good agreement by different experimenters and with different instruments. It is highly desirable that if possible the values be checked by some other method, using a totally different type of apparatus. Book A Determination of the International Ampere in Absolute Measure Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Determination of the International Ampere in Absolute Measure Classic Reprint written by E. B. Rosa and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Determination of the International Ampere in Absolute Measure Inasmuch as precise electrical measurements are usually made in terms Of standard resistances and standard cells, it would simplify the problem if a voltage instead Of a current were directly determined in absolute measure. The direct determination Of the volt with precision in absolute measure, however, presents very formidable difficulties and has never been made. It was largely for this reason that the ampere was chosen as the second independent unit instead Of the volt. Many absolute measure ments Of the ampere and Of the Ohm have, however, been made since Gauss and Weber first showed in 18 32 that a system Of absolute units is possible. These determinations, having been made at different times and at different places, can be com pared only by comparing the various concrete standards adopted at the different times. As there can be no concrete standard ampere, two expedients have been adopted for preserving the results Of the absolute measurement Of current. That most favored in the past is to determine the mass Of silver deposited per second in a silver voltameter by a current Of one ampere; the other, which in many cases in the past served as intermediary between the absolute determination and the silver voltameter measurement, is to determine the electromotive force of a certain standard cell in terms of a standard of resistance and the absolute ampere determined by the balance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mutual Inductance of a Circle and a Coaxial Single Layer Coil the Lorenz Apparatus and the Ayrton-Jones Absolute Electrodynamometer This problem of finding the mutual inductance of a circle and a coaxial single layer winding was first solved by Lorenz.1 Assuming that the current was uniformly distributed over the surface of the cylinder forming a current sheet he integrated over the length of the cylinder the expression for the mutual inductance of a circular element and the given circle. This expression is an elliptic inte gral. Lorenz reduced the integrated form to a series and gave the following formula for the mutual inductance of the disk and solenoid of what is now called the Lorenz apparatus. He called it, however.
