Book excerpt: A catalogue of the extensive retrospective exhibition "The Absence of Mark Manders" at the Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht. The rooms in the exhibition can be regarded as the spaces of the artist's ongoing work "Self-portrait as a building". The works have been - left behind - by the artist in three different zones: the visitor enters a living room, then the museum, and finally the studio. According to Manders, all of these works are interchangeable and can be put into a different context, like words in a sentence can also be used in different combinations. A text by Douglas Fogle focuses on the role of language in Manders's oeuvre.

Book Ask a Manager

Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Book Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television

Download or read book Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television written by Jerry Mander and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total departure from previous writing about television, this book is the first ever to advocate that the medium is not reformable. Its problems are inherent in the technology itself and are so dangerous—to personal health and sanity, to the environment, and to democratic processes—that TV ought to be eliminated forever. Weaving personal experiences through meticulous research, the author ranges widely over aspects of television that have rarely been examined and never before joined together, allowing an entirely new, frightening image to emerge. The idea that all technologies are "neutral," benign instruments that can be used well or badly, is thrown open to profound doubt. Speaking of TV reform is, in the words of the author, "as absurd as speaking of the reform of a technology such as guns."

Book The Capitalism Papers

Download or read book The Capitalism Papers written by Jerry Mander and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vein of his bestseller, Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television, nationally recognized social critic Jerry Mander researches, discusses, and exposes the momentous and unsolvable environmental and social problem of capitalism. Mander argues that capitalism is no longer a viable system: "What may have worked in 1900 is calamitous in 2010." Capitalism, utterly dependent on never–ending economic growth, is an impossible absurdity on a finite planet with limited resources. Climate change, together with global food, water, and resource shortages, are only the start. Mander draws attention to capitalism's obsessive need to dominate and undermine democracy, as well as to diminish social and economic equity. Designed to operate free of "morality," the system promotes "permanent war" as a key economic strategy. Worst of all, the problems of capitalism are intrinsic to the form. Many organizations are already anticipating the breakdown of the system and are working to define new hierarchies of democratic values that respect the carrying capacities of the planet.

  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Mark Manders written by Mark Manders and published by Art Institute of Chicago. This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This artist-designed publication documents "Isolated Rooms," a 2003 exhibition by Mark Manders at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. These installations marked the American museum debut for the 35-year-old Dutch artist, who has been exhibiting in Europe since the early 1990s. For "Isolated Rooms" Manders created fifteen new major pieces in a variety of media, including handmade and found objects, drawings, and sculptures. Manders used both traditional gallery settings and non-traditional spaces, such as a stairwell, an exterior wall of the museum, and a non-functioning bathroom. The book comprises two parts: Isolated Rooms Reference Book surveys the artist's oeuvre to date and features essays by James Rondeau and Dieter Roelstraet; the second fully documents the Chicago exhibitions and includes a checklist with discussions of each exhibited piece.
