Book The Aborigines of Tasmania Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Aborigines of Tasmania Classic Reprint written by H. Ling Roth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Tasmania Looking at the vestiges of a people so representative of the rudest type of man, anthropologists must join with philanthrophists' in regret ting their unhappy fate, which fills a dismal page of our colonial history. We are now beginning to see what scientific value there would have been in such a minute careful portraiture of their thoughts and customs as Mr. Hewitt is drawing up of the Australian tribes just across Bass' Straits. As this cannot be, at least it is necessary that the existing information should be diligently collected and critically sifted. To this task Mr. H. Ling Roth has devoted long and conscientious labour, examining in all likely quarters so as to gather together the notices scattered through voyages, histories, colonial documents, and other sources from which first-hand information, however fragmentary, could be obtained. Anthropologists, who have so often had to complain of the scantiness of materials as to the native Tasmanians, will find with surprise that much more is really known than was supposed, and will be glad to possess this book, the more so that its Object being technical rather than popular, only a small number of copies has been printed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Australia The government is administered by a council of old men, the young not being admitted. There is also a class that go from tribe to tribe, and their medicine men. The intelligence of the natives is quite underrated. Their skill and activity in war, and their subtlety as diplomatists, Mr. Lang says, are quite equal to the North American Indian. (having mixed with the North American Indians, I think this is rather exaggerated.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Aborigines of Victoria Vol 1

Download or read book The Aborigines of Victoria Vol 1 written by Robert Brough Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Victoria, Vol. 1: With Notes Relating to the Habits of the Natives of Other Parts of Australia and Tasmania The character of the following work requires that I should mention the circumstances under which I undertook the compilation of it. When, sixteen years ago, I was appointed Secretary of the Board for the Protection of the Aborigines, it seemed to me to be my duty to collect information respecting the customs of the people who had formerly owned the soil of Australia, and to make accurate drawings of their weapons and ornaments. I did not know then that I was commencing a work which would engage all my leisure for many years, and entail upon me a large amount of labor in correspondence alone. I had no idea, indeed, in the beginning, that the work would be a large one; but even if it had been possible to have foreseen that, and to have anticipated the difficulties I have 'had to contend with in tracing various customs from one point to another, and in verifying by a number of examples statements that, unsupported, appeared at the first view highly improbable - still I should, on account of the interest of the questions that presented themselves, and from a sense of duty, have labored earnestly in performing the task. For the proper and efficient treatment of such subjects as I have attempted to deal with, the mind should be wholly devoted to the consideration of them - unembarrassed by other onerous duties - or free, at least, from the anxieties that are inseparable from an official position in a new country. And this compilation should be judged rather as a series of sketches, written in such intervals of time as were available, than as a scientific work pre tending to completeness. Book A Geography of Tasmania Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Geography of Tasmania Classic Reprint written by H. H. Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geography of Tasmania The want of a Geography of Tasmania has long been felt by teachers. Examiners in the public examinations, who have set questions on the geography of the island, have remarked on the ignorance of the candidates of local facts. Nor is this surprising, as with no text work available, teachers have had to trust to their own know ledge, and all have not that knowledge. It is hoped that this little book will supply the want. Consider able space has been given to the industries of the island for it is now generally admitted that this, rather than dry names of places or divisions of the country, is the important and valuable part of geography. A short history of the island has been added, as at the time this book was undertaken no such history was in existence. The chapter on the Aborigines should be found interest ing to the pupils. Book Daily Life and Origin of the Tasmanians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Daily Life and Origin of the Tasmanians Classic Reprint written by James Bonwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Life and Origin of the Tasmanians The prejudices of party strife could not fail to colour stories of the Black War of Van Diamen'a Land. The long continuance of that war, the dispersion of the unhappy dark-skins, the sufferings of women and the destruction of children, all tended to the break up of the Tribes, the blending of old dialects, the confusion of ideas from intercourse with Whites. As the Last of the Tasmanians has been long out of print, a few remarks as to the history of the departed may not be here out of place. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Western Australia I am well aware that the subject is rather out of my line, and for this reason alone I can scarcely expect to do justice to the theme. Nevertheless, during my wander ings through Western Australia, in the capacity of a mining engineer, I came across a good many of the natives; and taking a profound interest in everything connected with the colony I resolved to set down in brief and simple form such facts as I could glean regarding this most curious specimen of the human race. I lay no more claim to originality than is due to one who has arranged his matter in his own way, and added a few thoughts suggested and accruing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lost Tasmanian Race New Holland, Dow Australia. In hair, in nose, in limb they differed. Both races were wandering hunters, never cultivating land, nor taming bird or beast for food supply. The chase gave no chance of settled habitation or form of government. The wooden pointed spear stayed the kangaroo in its leap, and the whirling stick brought down the winged fowl. The friction of two pieces of wood produced fire, whose embers roasted the food. Without houses, without culinary utensils, without garments, save the raw skin, they had no homes, and needed none.
