Download or read book The Abingdon War Food Book Classic Reprint written by Herbert Hoover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Abingdon War-Food Book I have read with lively interest John Wes ley's Thoughts about food difficulties. The difficulties that he noted in 1773 are still with us. Some people have too much food and some have too little. Such conditions have always existed and always will exist under our present social organization - and perhaps under any possible social organization. But at the present time we have newer and greater food problems; they are international problems. Now it is some nations, not only individuals, who have more food than is necessary, while others stand face to face with national starvation. Our duty, therefore, is a double one. We must try to solve in some measure the great international food problems and at the same time not forget those more individual problems Of which Wesley spoke. And the solving of the greater will help us in the solution Of the lesser prob lems, for the stimulus Of the present inter national food situation serves to arouse the interest Of everyone in all food problems. Book Food Supplies in Peace and War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Food Supplies in Peace and War Classic Reprint written by Sir Robert Henry Rew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Supplies in Peace and War The invention of mechanical motive power, and the consequent development of regular and rapid means of transport throughout the world, have de-localised food supplies. No longer is any nation doomed to starvation because its harvests fail or pestilence destroys its flocks and herds. All the ends of the earth can contribute to feed those who are in need. The distribution of food is determined not by physical but by economic forces, and so long as the machinery of transportation by land and sea is unhampered, the risk of famine is shared by the whole community of nations. Book Food in War Time Classic Reprint

Download or read book Food in War Time Classic Reprint written by Graham Lusk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food in War Time If one takes a pint of whole milk daily, or even, as we have seen, cabbage or beet-tops in its stead, one may take fat in the forms of olive oil or cottonseed oil, corn oil, cocoanut oil, peanut butter, or in other yege table oils, without possible prejudice to health. Osborne and Mendel, and more recently Halliburton, have pointed out that oleomargarine as prepared from beef - fat contains the fat-soluble growth-promoting accessory substance or vitamine which is present in butter-fat, but which is not contained in vegetable oils or in lard. Halliburton and Drummond summarize the practical results of their work as follows: But when we approach the subject of the dietary of the poorer classes, the question is a more serious one. In ordinary times the consumption of beef dripping, which is considerable among the poor, would to a large extent supply the lacking properties of a vegetable-oil margarine. But at the present time beef itself is expensive, and the Opportunities of obtaining dripping are there fore minimized. At the same time the three important foods for children already enumerated (milk, butter, eggs) have risen in cost, so as to be almost prohibitive to those with slender incomes. The vegetable-oil margarines still remain comparatively cheap, and the danger is that unless measures are taken to insure a proper milk supply for infants at a reasonable charge, these infants may run the risk Of being fed, so far as fat is concerned, entirely upon an inferior brand of margarine, destitute of the growth-promoting accessory substance. It would be truer economy even for the poor to purchase smaller quantities of an oleo-oil margarine if they cannot afford the luxury of real butter. The legal restrictions placed upon the sale of oleo margarine and the taxes enhancing its cost, now in operation in many of our states, are without warrant in morals or common sense and should be entirely abolished in times like these. A well made brand of oleomargarine is much more palatable than butter of the second grade, and certainly for cooking purposes is just as valuable. We must eat right to be strong, conserve the food we have, and share it with our fighting men and our allies. It is up to every person in the United States to put himself into the best possible physical condition so that he can do his task, whatever it is, more effectively. The doctors have their hands full the nursing profession is taxed to the limit. We must help them conserve their time by staying well. Book Conservation Menus and Recipes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Conservation Menus and Recipes Classic Reprint written by Marie Munn Bartlett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conservation Menus and Recipes This little book of menus and recipes grew out of the desire of the Riley Circle to aid in the food conservation movement during the war. We wished, to follow scrupulously every re quest of the Food Administration. At the same time we wished to keep our families well nourished and to be able to offer to them and to our friends food, so carefully prepared and so daintily served, as to bring refreshment to mind and body, and to keep alive the amenities of life during this period of stress and strain. Believing that the richly varied products of our country offer substitutes not needed by our Allies, which skillful handling could prepare for our own tables, thus releasing the more staple products for the war needs, we asked Mrs. Charles Lincoln Bartlett to use her well-known skill to outline for us menus which would accomplish this end. Mrs. Bartlett has here gathered together recipes which she has culled from the past and the present, from at home and abroad, and included many of her own creation. The distinct contribution which we feel she has made, however, aside from the substitution of other ingredients for those which it is nec essary to conserve, is the combination of these recipes into menus of balanced food value and delightful attractiveness. Book Miss Graham s Cold War Cookbook

Download or read book Miss Graham s Cold War Cookbook written by Celia Rees and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A perfect summer read; gripping, original, well-drawn and compassionate"--Joanne Harris "Celia Rees is a superb writer, and this novel has one of the most irresistible and unique story hooks I've ever come across. This book deserves to be huge!"--Sophie Hannah A striking historical novel about an ordinary young British woman sent to uncover a network of spies and war criminals in post-war Germany that will appeal to fans of The Huntress and Transcription. World War II has just ended, and Britain has established the Control Commission for Germany, which oversees their zone of occupation. The Control Commission hires British civilians to work in Germany, rebuild the shattered nation and prosecute war crimes. Somewhat aimless, bored with her job as a provincial schoolteacher, and unwilling to live with her overbearing mother any longer, thirtysomething Edith Graham applies for a job with the Commission—but she is also recruited by her cousin, Leo, who is in the Secret Service. To them, Edith is perfect spy material...single, ordinary-looking, with a college degree in German. Cousin Leo went to Oxford with one of their most hunted war criminals, Count Kurt von Stavenow, who Edith remembers all too well from before the war. He wants her to find him. Intrigued by the challenge, Edith heads to Germany armed with a convincing cover story: she's an unassuming Education Officer sent to help resurrect German schools. To send information back to her Secret Service handlers in London, Edith has crafted the perfect alter ego, cookbook author Stella Snelling, who writes a popular magazine cookery column. She embeds crucial intelligence within the recipes she collects. But occupied Germany is awash with other spies, collaborators, and opportunists, and as she's pulled into their world, Edith soon discovers that no one is what they seem to be. The closer she gets to uncovering von Stavenow's whereabouts--and the network of German civilians who still support him--the greater the danger. With a unique, compelling premise, Miss Graham's Cold War Cookbook is a beautifully crafted and gripping novel about daring, betrayal, and female friendship.
