Book The ABCs of Robert Lax

Download or read book The ABCs of Robert Lax written by Robert Lax and published by Small Press United. This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Essays. Interviews. Letters. "He's good, isn't he!," commented Samuel Beckett, and little else need be said of Robert Lax. The ABCs of Robert Lax assembles a truly panoramic array of essays on Lax's writings; with extensive interviews, examples of his correspondence and key texts from his previously unpublished poems, prose and autobiographical reflections, this book provides both text and context. Written in relative isolation on the islands of Kalymnos and Patmos, Lax's poetry has been consistently championed by such writers as Thomas Merton, Mark Van Voren, Susan Howe and Denise Levertov, and by artists, musicians and filmmakers. "all things bade him, all things invited him to join" (from "Tractatus VI"); The ABCs of Robert Lax bids us, invites us into the vivid experimental world of a poet who is, in Jack Kerouac's words, "a Pilgrim in search of beautiful Innocence, writing lovingly, finding it, simply, in his own way."

Book A Monk in the Inner City

Download or read book A Monk in the Inner City written by Mary Lou Kownacki and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many centuries ago the ancient Desert Fathers and Mothers moved into the wilderness to leave behind the compulsions of the world and draw near to God. For Mary Lou Kownacki, a Benedictine nun and long-time peacemaker, her wilderness is the inner-city of Erie, Pennsylvania, surrounded by poor families trying to survive and keep hope alive in the midst of drugs, violence, and despair. From this outpost on the margins, she observes the world in poetic meditations, written with the passion of a prophet and the heart of a mystic. "I write about days when spiritual security, not fear, was a neighborhood's gift to children. I write about the sin of ignoring those who have the same needs we all do but no way to satisfy them. It is one way of trying to stretch my monk's robe until it embraces the suffering world."

Book excerpt: An intimate biography of the avant-garde poet and spiritual seeker who abandoned his career to join the circus and live among fishermen in Greece. Robert Lax inspired Thomas Merton, Jack Kerouac, William Maxwell and many others with his quest to live a true life as both an artist and a spiritual seeker. Known in Europe as a avant-garde poet, Lax worked at The New Yorker, wrote Hollywood screenplays and edited a Paris literary journal—when he wasn’t studying philosophy, serving the poor in Harlem or living in a sanctuary high in the French Alps. Lax called his approach to life pure act: a way of living in the moment that was both spontaneous and practiced, God-inspired and self-chosen. By devoting himself to simplicity, poverty and prayer, he expanded his capacity for peace, joy and love while producing distinctive poetry of such stark beauty critics called him “one of America’s greatest experimental poets” and “one of the new ‘saints’ of the avant-garde.” Biographer Michael N. McGregor met Lax in Greece when he was a young seeker himself. He continued to visit him regularly over fifteen years. Pure Act is a tale of adventure, an exploration of friendship, an anthology of wisdom, and a testament to the liberating power of living an uncommon life. Book The Spirit of the Sixties

Download or read book The Spirit of the Sixties written by James J. Farrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spirit of the Sixties explains how and why the personal became political when Sixties activists confronted the institutions of American postwar culture. The Spirit of the Sixties uses political personalism to explain how and why the personal became political when Sixties activists confronted the institutions of American postwar culture. After establishing its origins in the Catholic Worker movement, the Beat generation, the civil rights movement, and Ban-the-Bomb protests, James Farrell demonstrates the impact of personalism on Sixties radicalism. Students, antiwar activists and counterculturalists all used personalist perspectives in the "here and now revolution" of the decade. These perspectives also persisted in American politics after the Sixties. Exploring the Sixties not just as history but as current affairs, Farrell revisits the perennial questions of human purpose and cultural practice contested in the decade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Catholic was Thomas Merton? Since his death in 1968, Merton’s Catholic identity has been regularly questioned, both by those who doubt the authenticity of his Catholicism given his commitment to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue and by those who admire Merton as a thinker but see him as an aberration who rebelled against his Catholicism to articulate ideas that went against the church. In this book, Gregory K. Hillis illustrates that Merton’s thought was intertwined with his identity as a Catholic priest and emerged out of a thorough immersion in the church’s liturgical, theological, and spiritual tradition. In addition to providing a substantive introduction to Merton’s life and thought, this book illustrates that Merton was fundamentally shaped by his identity as a Roman Catholic.

Book A Course in Christian Mysticism

Download or read book A Course in Christian Mysticism written by Thomas Merton and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Merton's lectures to the young monastics at the Abbey of Gethsemani provide a good look at Merton the scholar. A Course in Christian Mysticism gathers together, for the first time, the best of these talks into a spiritual, historical, and theological survey of Christian mysticism--from St. John's gospel to St. John of the Cross. Sixteen centuries are covered over thirteen lectures. A general introduction sets the scene for when and how the talks were prepared and for the perennial themes one finds in them, making them relevant for spiritual seekers today. This compact volume allows anyone to learn from one of the twentieth century's greatest Catholic spiritual teachers. The study materials at the back of the book, including additional primary source readings and thoughtful questions for reflection and discussion, make this an essential text for any student of Christian mysticism.

Book Life and Holiness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Merton
  • Publisher : Colchis Books
  • Release :
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Life and Holiness written by Thomas Merton and published by Colchis Books. This book was released on with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is intended to be a very simple book, an elementary treatment of a few basic ideas in Christian spirituality. Hence it should be useful to any Christian, and indeed to anyone who wants to acquaint himself with some principles of the interior life as it is understood in the Catholic Church. Nothing is here said of such subjects as “contemplation” or even “mental prayer.” And yet the book emphasizes what is at once the most common and the most mysterious aspect in the Christian life: grace, the power and the light of God in us, purifying our hearts, transforming us in Christ, making us true sons of God, enabling us to act in the world as his instruments for the good of all men and for his glory. This is therefore a meditation on some fundamental themes appropriate to the active life. It must be said at once that the active life is essential to every Christian. Clearly the active life must mean more than the life which is led in religious institutes of men and women who teach, care for the sick, and so on. (When one is talking of the “active life” as opposed to the “contemplative life,” this is the usual reference.) Here action is not looked at in opposition to contemplation, but as an expression of charity and as a necessary consequence of union with God by baptism.
