Download or read book Aristotle on the Common Sense written by Pavel Gregoric and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from using our eyes to see and our ears to hear, we regularly and effortlessly perform a number of complex perceptual operations that cannot be explained in terms of the five senses taken individually. Such operations include, for example, perceiving that the same object is white and sweet, noticing the difference between white and sweet, or knowing that one's senses are active. Observing that lower animals must be able to perform such operations, and being unprepared to ascribe any share in rationality to them, Aristotle explained such operations with reference to a higher-order perceptual capacity which unites and monitors the five senses. This capacity is known as the 'common sense' or sensus communis. Unfortunately, Aristotle provides only scattered and opaque references to this capacity. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the exact nature and functions of this capacity have been a matter of perennial controversy. Pavel Gregoric offers an extensive and compelling treatment of the Aristotelian conception of the common sense, which has become part and parcel of Western psychological theories from antiquity through to the Middle Ages, and well into the early modern period. Aristotle on the Common Sense begins with an introduction to Aristotle's theory of perception and sets up a conceptual framework for the interpretation of textual evidence. In addition to analysing those passages which make explicit mention of the common sense, and drawing out the implications for Aristotle's terminology, Gregoric provides a detailed examination of each function of this Aristotelian faculty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, increasing numbers of people are turning to the ancient health system of Ayurveda to restore balance and well-being in their lives. While Ayurveda is easy to implement, its concepts and Sanskrit terms are often confusing. In Ayurvedic Nutrition, however, Atreya has explained them clearly and lucidly. It is, therefore, the most accessible book on Ayurveda to date. For anyone who has struggled with one-size-fits-all diet fads, it offers a welcome relief with its comprehensive approach to nutrition adapted to every body type. Beginning with a self-test to determine the specific metabolic and psychological profile, the book emphasizes the importance of balance among all levels of the healing process-mind, body, and spirit. It then presents clear guidelines for choosing foods and making lifestyle choices to support a natural, healthy state and avoid those practices that disrupt the natural metabolic balance. Drawn from the author's twenty-five years of practicing natural medicine, the book is highlighted by case studies, which illuminate the healing and balancing powers of Ayurveda. From weight loss to the reversal of disease, the programs outlined in this practical and inspirational book will help anyone recover natural rhythms and restore inherent balance.
Download or read book Austerity in Britain written by Ina Zweiniger-Bargielowska and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austerity in Britain is the first book to explore the entire episode of rationing, austerity, and fair shares from 1939 until 1955. These policies were central to the British war effort and to post-war reconstruction. The book analyses the connections between government policy, consumption, gender, and party politics during and after the Second World War. The economic background to austerity, the policy's administration, and changes in consumption standards are examined. Rationing resulted in at times extensive black markets and popular attitudes to the policy ranged from wartime acquiescence to post-war discontent. Austerity in Britain qualifies the myth of common sacrifice on the home front and highlights the limitations of the fair-shares policy which failed to achieve genuine equality between classes or between men and women. The continuation of rationing and austerity policies after 1945 was central to party politics. Disaffection, particularly among women, undermined Labour's popularity while the Conservatives' critique of austerity was instrumental to the party's victories at the general elections of 1951 and 1955.
