Book excerpt: St. Alphonsus writes: “a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery.” Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: “There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!” We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. Instead, he confined himself to a few important data on the principal philosophers of past ages, and the author tried to sketch the intellectual equipment with which the student is supposed to begin philosophy.

Book Dictionary of Scholastic Philosophy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scholastic philosopher is interested in definition for a different reason than the lexicographer and linguist. The philosopher is trying to learn things. Fe defines, after investigating reality, in an attempt to describe reality clearly and to sum up some aspect of his understanding of reality. Hence, we find our scholastic philosophers adopting as a main feature of their method this insistence on defining, on precise and detailed explanation of their definitions, and on proving that their definitions da correctly express what a nature or activity is. A dictionary of the language of scholastic philosophy fitted to the needs of beginners and of undergraduate students of the subject is not available in English.

Book Summary of Scholastic Principles

Download or read book Summary of Scholastic Principles written by Bernard Wuellner and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles may well be regarded as the main part of philosophy. They are among the major discoveries of philosophy, condensing in themselves much philosophical inquiry and insight. They are the starting point of much philosophical discussion. They are the base for exposition, for proof, and for criticism. They serve the student and the reader of philosophy much as legal maxims serve jurists and as proverbs serve the people. They are for scholastic philosophers the household truth of their tradition. This book includes not only all principles of scholastic philosophy but also exercises to apply the principles to several occasions. The book is useful for all students and professionals in philosophy.

Book Descartes and the Last Scholastics

Download or read book Descartes and the Last Scholastics written by Roger Ariew and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing renaissance in Descartes studies has been characterized by an attempt to understand the philosopher's texts against his own intellectual background. Roger Ariew here argues that Cartesian philosophy should be regarded as it was in Descartes's own day—as a reaction against, as well as an indebtedness to, scholastic philosophy. His book illuminates Cartesian philosophy by analyzing debates between Descartes and contemporary schoolmen and surveying controversies arising in its first reception. The volume touches upon many topics and themes shared by Cartesian and late scholastic philosophy: matter and form; infinity, place, time, void, and motion; the substance of the heavens; the object or subject of metaphysics; principles of metaphysics (being and ideas) and transcendentals (for example, unity, quantity, principle of individuation, truth and falsity). Part I exhibits the differences and similarities among the doctrines of Descartes and those of Jesuits and other scholastics in seventeenth-century France. The contrasts Descartes drew between his philosophy and that of others are the subject of Part II, which also examines some arguments in which he was involved and details the continued controversy caused by Cartesianism in the second half of the seventeenth century.

Book So What s New About Scholasticism

Download or read book So What s New About Scholasticism written by Rajesh Heynickx and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In So What’s New about Scholasticism? thirteen international scholars gauge the extraordinary impact of a religiously inspired conceptual framework in a modern society. The essays that are brought together in this volume reveal that Neo-Thomism became part of contingent social contexts and varying intellectual domains. Rather than an ecclesiastic project of like-minded believers, Neo-Thomism was put into place as a source of inspiration for various concepts of modernization and progress. This volume reconstructs how Neo-Thomism sought to resolve disparities, annul contradictions and reconcile incongruent, new developments. It asks the question why Neo-Thomist ideas and arguments were put into play and how they were transferred across various scientific disciplines and artistic media, growing into one of the most influential master-narratives of the twentieth century. Edward Baring, Dries Bosschaert, James Chappel, Adi Efal-Lautenschläger, Rajesh Heynickx, Sigrid Leyssen, Christopher Morrissey, Annette Mülberger, Jaume Navarro, Herman Paul, Karim Schelkens, Wim Weymans and John Carter Wood reconstruct a bewildering, yet decipherable thought-structure that has left a deep mark on twentieth century politics, philosophy, science and religion.

Book ABC of Scholastic Philosophy

Download or read book ABC of Scholastic Philosophy written by A. C. Cotter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is only partially new. It is an expansion of Logic and Epistemology, which was first printed in 1930 and has since been reprinted or revised almost each year. The expansion consists in the addition of an Introduction to Philosophy and of Ontology. It had been my original intention to add both parts but other more urgent work stood in the way until now. As in the preface to the former work, I wish to stress a few considerations that have guided me in the composition of this. Some are more general, others are applicable to one or the other of the branches of philosophy here offered. 1. Brevity, plain and direct presentation, close-knit reasoning and logical coherence--these are the aims which have been kept in view throughout. 2. The scholastic system and method were chosen for presentation. Some 30 years of teaching philosophy and theology have convinced me of its pedagogical worth. There is no other philosophical system that can rival the scholastic in common sense and definiteness. There is no other philosophical method that even approaches the scholastic in sound reasoning and logical force. To the beginner, who is not yet capable of grappling with superficial systems and subtle methods, such a philosophy is indispensable. 3. The Introduction to Philosophy differs considerably from those current today. It is not a summary of philosophical problems, which the beginner cannot digest and which may engender in him a spirit of skepticism. For a like reason I have not given an outline of the history of philosophy with the same problems arranged by periods. Instead, I confined myself to a few important data on the principal philosophers of past ages, and I tried to sketch the intellectual equipment with which the student is supposed to begin philosophy. 4. In Logic, the simple syllogism has been made the unifying theme as well as the ultimate aim. On the other hand, the sentence or proposition has been made the starting point of all explanations; the reason for this is the well known axiom that all truths are expressed by us in sentence form. 5. Nor-let it be said even more emphatically-is Epistemology a branch of psychology. Epistemology investigates the final cause of our cognitive faculties, psychology the other three causes (formal, material, efficient). Again, the four causes are present in all cognition, but Epistemology restricts itself to the purpose of cognition. 6. In Ontology, it has been my endeavor to eliminate the Latin flavor and to substitute for it readable and plain English. Special attention has been given to the bibliography and the alphabetical index. The former lists practically all English Catholic books on the subject, including both earliest and latest publications. The latter has been made very detailed so as to insure the utmost of usefulness.

Book Neo Thomism in Action

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wim Decock
  • Publisher : Leuven University Press
  • Release : 2021-12-01
  • ISBN : 946270306X
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Neo Thomism in Action written by Wim Decock and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his encyclical Aeterni Patris (1879), Pope Leo XIII expressed the conviction that the renewed study of the philosophical legacy of Saint Thomas Aquinas would help Catholics to engage in a dialogue with secular modernity while maintaining respect for Church doctrine and tradition. As a result, the neo-scholastic framework dominated Catholic intellectual production for nearly a century thereafter. This volume assesses the societal impact of the Thomist revival movement, with particular attention to the juridical dimension of this epistemic community. Contributions from different disciplinary backgrounds offer a multifaceted and in-depth analysis of many different networks and protagonists of the neo-scholastic movement, its institutions and periodicals, and its conceptual frameworks. Although special attention is paid to the Leuven Institute of Philosophy and Faculty of Law, the volume also discloses the neo-Thomist revival in other national and transnational contexts. By highlighting diverse aspects of its societal and legal impact, Neo-Thomism in Action argues that neo-scholasticism was neither a sterile intellectual exercise nor a monolithic movement. The book expands our understanding of how Catholic intellectual discourse communities were constructed and how they pervaded law and society during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Book An Introduction to Catholic Philosophy

Download or read book An Introduction to Catholic Philosophy written by A. C. Cotter and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotter aims to introduce Catholic philosophy with brevity, plain and direct presentation, close-knit reasoning and logical coherence. Straying away from exhaustive treatises and going instead with a scholastic approach, his goal for his work to be easily digested by philosophical beginners is achieved. He chooses this approach in accordance with his belief in the clear distinction between Catholic faith and scholastic philosophy; the former can exist without the latter. But only scholastic philosophy is in complete harmony with Catholic faith; it alone has been approved as such by the magisterium of the Catholic Church, and is prescribed for those who would advance to the study of Catholic theology.

Book Introduction to Scholastic Realism

Download or read book Introduction to Scholastic Realism written by John Peterson and published by New Perspectives in Philosophical Scholarship. This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholastic realism is a type of moderate realism. As such, it falls between platonism and nominalism on the issue of universals. Universals, strictly speaking, only exist in minds, but they are founded on real relations of similarity in the world. Scholastic realism goes beyond moderate realism and affirms that universals also exist transcendently; but instead of having a separated existence, transcendent universals exist in God's mind. This work argues that moderate realism is implied by the correct analysis of predication and persons, and that Scholastic realism, in particular, is implied by the correct analysis of knowledge, truth, and right action.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Descartes

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Descartes written by John Cottingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-09-25 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descartes occupies a position of pivotal importance as one of the founding fathers of modern philosophy; he is, perhaps the most widely studied of all philosophers. In this authoritative collection an international team of leading scholars in Cartesian studies present the full range of Descartes' extraordinary philosophical achievement. His life and the development of his thought, as well as the intellectual background to and reception of his work, are treated at length. At the core of the volume are a group of chapters on his metaphysics: the celebrated 'Cogito' argument, the proofs of God's existence, the 'Cartesian circle' and the dualistic theory of the mind and its relation to his theological and scientific views. Other chapters cover the philosophical implications of his work in algebra, his place in the seventeenth-century scientific revolution, the structure of his physics, and his work on physiology and psychology.
