Download or read book Aberdeenshire Folk Tales written by Grace Banks and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folklore of the north-east has provided a rich tapestry for the tales within; from Celtic and Pictish origins meet witches, selkies, smugglers, fairies, monsters, despicable rogues, riddles and heroes. Tragic events, spellbinding characters, humour, romance and clever minds are bound together by two well-established storytellers living and working in the city and shire of Aberdeen. Some of the tales in this collection are based on historical fact while others are embedded in myth and legend. All the stories are set against the backdrop of this lovely and varied landscape; the silver city and surrounding farm lands, the forested and mountainous terrain through which the River Dee flows, the rolling, gentler land surrounding the meandering River Don and the beautiful but sometimes forbidding Aberdeenshire coastline. Sheena and Grace have both been inspired in their storytelling and singing by the traveller, raconteur and balladeer, Stanley Robertson.

Book A Z of Curious County Durham

Download or read book A Z of Curious County Durham written by Martin Dufferwiel and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon the varied history and unique heritage of the County Palatine of Durham, an ancient land of saints and warlords. It is a catalogue of curious tales, odd anecdotes and quirky characters from County Durham’s past. Within its pages the reader will discover stories of hauntings, murders and mysterious deaths, while modern-day enigmas – such as the ancient structure that archaeologists remain at a loss to explain, or the lost treasure found at the bottom of the River Wear – are revisited.Inspired in part by the chronicles and compendiums of County Durham’s nineteenth-century historians and antiquarians, this book is a miscellany – at times tragic, at times comic, but always entertaining. And for those for whom the collective subjects hold a perennial fascination, it is ideal for dipping into, perhaps to learn something new about wonderfully curious County Durham.

Book Bloody Scottish History Aberdeen

Download or read book Bloody Scottish History Aberdeen written by Elma McMenemy and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aberdeen has been inhabited for 8,000 years, since the first Hunter-Gatherers settled on the banks of the River Dee. 4,000 years later, Bronze Age peoples left their mark on the landscape by constructing a huge number of recumbent stone circles, once thought to be places of sacrifice. Invaders including Celts, Romans and Vikings met violent, bloody resistance, and the victorious Roman army left thousands of Caledonian corpses for the crows following the Battle of Mons Graupius. From the slaughter of Aberdeen Castle’s English garrison (part of a citizens’ uprising in support of Robert the Bruce) to all-out assaults on the city by Kings, Royalists and Nazis, no century has left the city unmarked. Plague, wars, clan feuds, murderers, witches, covenanters and slavers – all have stained the silver city red with blood!

Download or read book When Scotland Was Jewish written by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.
