Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM CHAPTER THREE "For a kid, every day should begin with 'Once upon a time ... ' Every moment of every day should be an adventure. Today, during this first century of a new millennium, are we in danger of scheduling our kids' lives away? And, for what purpose? I don't know about you, but years from now, I do not want to wake up and look back and realize that I missed out, that I was so consumed by my own life that I forgot to live in the moment with my children ... that I raised my kids to live like me-far from the present moment-and, that I spent so much energy worrying about my tomorrows and my goals and my ambitions that I failed to receive and cradle a most sacred calling, this privilege of parenting." "The Awe-full Privilege is a heartwarming and personal account of the joy of parenting. It illustrates beautifully the importance of slowing down and enjoying our children while they are with us ... and giving them the most precious gift of all, our time." -ANITA HITTINGER, Director of Risen Lord Montessori School

Book Airborne Wind Energy

Download or read book Airborne Wind Energy written by Roland Schmehl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in-depth coverage of the latest research and development activities concerning innovative wind energy technologies intended to replace fossil fuels on an economical basis. A characteristic feature of the various conversion concepts discussed is the use of tethered flying devices to substantially reduce the material consumption per installed unit and to access wind energy at higher altitudes, where the wind is more consistent. The introductory chapter describes the emergence and economic dimension of airborne wind energy. Focusing on “Fundamentals, Modeling & Simulation”, Part I includes six contributions that describe quasi-steady as well as dynamic models and simulations of airborne wind energy systems or individual components. Shifting the spotlight to “Control, Optimization & Flight State Measurement”, Part II combines one chapter on measurement techniques with five chapters on control of kite and ground stations, and two chapters on optimization. Part III on “Concept Design & Analysis” includes three chapters that present and analyze novel harvesting concepts as well as two chapters on system component design. Part IV, which centers on “Implemented Concepts”, presents five chapters on established system concepts and one chapter about a subsystem for automatic launching and landing of kites. In closing, Part V focuses with four chapters on “Technology Deployment” related to market and financing strategies, as well as on regulation and the environment. The book builds on the success of the first volume “Airborne Wind Energy” (Springer, 2013), and offers a self-contained reference guide for researchers, scientists, professionals and students. The respective chapters were contributed by a broad variety of authors: academics, practicing engineers and inventors, all of whom are experts in their respective fields.

Book Community Series Police Trauma Loss and Resilience volume II

Download or read book Community Series Police Trauma Loss and Resilience volume II written by Konstantinos Papazoglou and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police work increases the risk of psychological work-related injuries substantially: As a result of repeated exposure to trauma, police and first responders have more than twice the risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) when compared to the general population. We often hear of the impact of PTSD and depression on police officers’ health and overall functioning, including on their work performance. Both PTSD and depression are part of Operational Stress Injuries (OSI), which describe any persistent psychological difficulty that results from operational or service-related duties. Next to depression and PTSD, OSI includes anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, injury and pain, sleep disturbances and other conditions that may interfere with daily functioning. Importantly, factors frequently observed in police officers, such as burnout, moral injury, and compassion fatigue present additional mental health issues, further contribute to the maintenance and exacerbation of their psychological symptomatology, thereby prolonging recovery and contributing to the chronicity of disability, suffering and pain.
