Book excerpt: Taoism, the set of philosophical teachings and religious practices rooted in the understanding of the Chinese character Tao, or "The Way," was founded by the Chinese philosopher Laozi in the 6th Century BCE, whose work, the Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way and its Virtue) laid the philosophical foundation for the religion's beliefs. This volume starts, as it should, with a detailed chronology of Taoism and its relationship both to China and other teachings. The introduction inserts it further in this basic context. Book Tao Te Jing in Plain English

Download or read book Tao Te Jing in Plain English written by and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tao Te Ching is one of the more popularly translated texts of all historical Chinese writings. Despite the many efforts that have gone into studying and translating Lao Tzus works, it is still remains very difficult to understand, even to native readers. Therefore, only those who fully comprehend the text can translate it properly. This version opts to give as accurate of a translation in as plain of English as possible. Since our goal is to bring a comprehendible Tao Te Ching to our readers, we decided against conforming to any sort of poetic forms. Although we used the same original text as some of the other translators, there are some notable differences in our interpretations, such as in Chapters One and Twenty. In order to better allow our readers to understand the text, this translation also compares Lao Tzus ideas with other great thinkers, such as Einstein and Napoleon.

Book Early Chinese Mysticism

Download or read book Early Chinese Mysticism written by Livia Kohn and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Chinese mysticism vanish after its first appearance in ancient Taoist philosophy, to surface only after a thousand years had passed, when the Chinese had adapted Buddhism to their own culture? This first integrated survey of the mystical dimension of Taoism disputes the commonly accepted idea of such a hiatus. Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages. Influenced by but ultimately independent of Buddhism, it took forms more various than the quietistic withdrawal of Laozi or the sudden enlightenment of the Chan Buddhists. On the basis of a new theoretical evaluation of mysticism, this study analyzes the relationship between philosophical and religious Taoism and between Buddhism and the native Chinese tradition. Kohn shows how the quietistic and socially oriented Daode jing was combined with the ecstatic and individualistic mysticism of the Zhuangzi, with immortality beliefs and practices, and with Buddhist insight meditation, mind analysis, and doctrines of karma and retribution. She goes on to demonstrate that Chinese mysticism, a complex synthesis by the late Six Dynasties, reached its zenith in the Tang, laying the foundations for later developments in the Song traditions of Inner Alchemy, Chan Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism.

Book Tao Te Ching

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lao Tzu
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2012-01-04
  • ISBN : 0307745449
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Tao Te Ching written by Lao Tzu and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly two generations, this translation of the Tao Te Ching has been the standard for those seeking access to the wisdom of Taoist thought. Now Jane English and her long-time editor, Toinette Lippe, have refreshed and revised the translation, so that it more faithfully reflects the Classical Chinese in which it was first written, while taking into account changes in our own language and eliminating any lingering infelicities. Lao Tsu’s philosophy is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it rather than against it, for to try to change what is only sets up resistance. Nature provides everything without requiring payment or thanks. It does so without discrimination. So let us present the same face to everyone and treat them all as equals, however they may behave. If we watch carefully, we will see that work proceeds more quickly and easily if we stop “trying,” if we stop putting in so much extra effort, if we stop looking for results. In the clarity of a still and open mind, truth will be reflected. Te—which may be translated as “virtue” or “strength”—lies always in Tao meaning “the way” or “natural law.” In other words: Simply be.

Book Embarking on the Way

Download or read book Embarking on the Way written by Solala Towler and published by . This book was released on 1998-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embarking On The Way is especially designed to present the fascinating world of Taoist philosophy and practice to Western readers. Written in a simple and down-to-earth manner, it encompasses a wide range of Taoist studies -- from the classical teachings of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu to the Tat of sex and relationship. It is purposefully written in a non-scholarly fashion, to appeal to readers who are interested in non-religious Taoism and how it works for Western practitioners. Unlike other spiritual philosophies, there is nothing to join, no vows to take, no special diet to follow, and there is no need to let go of your own personal religion or spiritual path to benefit from the teachings and practices of Tao. Embarking On The Way offers the Taoist philosophy and then allows the reader to choose which parts of the program he or she wishes to follow.
