Book excerpt: Excerpt from The ABC of Life Insurance TO explain and illustrate some of the fundamental and elementary principles of Life Insurance so simply that they can readily be understood by men who have not been specially trained as mathematicians, or have not had their attention particularly directed to the theory and mathe maties of Life Insurance, is the aim of this little book. For those who already possess this elementary knowledge, there are many excellent hand-books which carry the dis cussion much further, and cover the entire subject in the ablest and most satisfactory manner. But as an intro duction to these, a beginning, an easy lesson, it is hoped that the following pages will have their use. They owe their existence to the impossibility of finding among the text-books already published, anything which seemed exactly adapted to this purpose. C. E. W. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. NET PREMIUMS. A net premium is one in the calculation of which due allowance has been made for the interest which a company may receive upon its investments, but with no allowance for the expenses of the business. Thus far we have, for the sake of simplicity, neglected the question of interest. But, since a company may realize considerable amounts in the way of interest upon judiciously invested funds, not needed for present use, it is plain that, in determining the premium which it is necessary to charge, due consideration of this source of income should be had. Obviously, the rate of premium will be reduced by the fact that interest receipts are to be added to the company's income. If too great a reduction is made, however, the premium will not be sufficient. And, as life insurance contracts may cover a very long period, premiums must be based upon assumptions which are likely to be realized in actual experience through an indefinite term of years. With this fact in view, 4 per cent has been taken as the probable rate of interest, in the calculation of premiums. The following explanation of the method of calculating a net annual premium for an insurance for the term of five years, presents only the very simplest form of such calculations, the design being rather to illustrate principles and the method of their application, than to present or attempt to demonstrate intricate mathematical problems. What should be the net annual premium (level) for an insurance of $1000, for the term of 5 years only, upon the life of a man aged 40, according to the American Experience Table with 4 per cent interest? An annuity is the recurring annual payment of a uniform amount. Consequently the annual premium is an annuity paid by the...

Book Life Insurance Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Insurance The "Yale Lectures on Life Insurance" appeared five years ago. Although a considerable edition was printed, the unexpectedly large demand soon exhausted it, and as the plates were destroyed, for two years the lectures have been out of print. It seems desirable that either a new edition of the lectures should be printed, or that something new should be published in their place. The latter alternative has been chosen, and instead of simply reprinting the old lectures, the plan has been adopted of selecting special readings, partly from the "Yale Lectures," partly from other sources. This plan was preferred for two reasons. In the first place, many changes have taken place in the insurance business since the old lectures were given, and much new and valuable material has appeared. In the second place, it has been thought that by not confining the readings to the old lectures a more comprehensive treatment could be secured. In this way it has been hoped to broaden the scope of the new readings, and thus to increase their usefulness. Only four of the lectures included in the old volume are reprinted, and three of these have been partly rewritten. Some of the matter now published has never appeared before, and much of the remainder has been revised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Life Insurance

Download or read book Life Insurance written by Solomon S. Huebner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Insurance: A d104book The preparation of this text was undertaken at the suggestion of the National Association of Life Underwriters. In making the suggestion, the Association was actuated by the desire for a comprehensive textbook adapted to the needs of classroom instruction for beginners of the study of life insurance in colleges and high schools; one which would also serve as a clear and simple exposition of the subject for laymen and life insurance solicitors. To fulfill this purpose it has been the authors object to bring together in compact and classified form the essential facts, principles and practices of the life-insurance business, and to present them in a simple and untechnical manner. The book does not attempt to discuss the highly technical aspects of the business, such as the specialist may desire; instead its purpose is to treat comprehensively those phases concerning which the average student, layman and solicitor should be informed in order to have a clear understanding of the nature of life insurance and the family, personal and business uses to which it may be put. The thirty-two chapters of the text have been grouped into five distinct parts, dealing respectively with the "Nature and Uses of Life Insurance," the "Science of Life Insurance," "Special Forms of Life Insurance," the "Organization, Management and Supervision of Legal Reserve Companies," and "Important Legal Phases of Life Insurance." The first part of the volume is devoted to a discussion of the practical uses to which life insurance may be applied. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the leading types of policies sold, with a view to giving a detailed analysis of the contracts and an extended statement of the advantages and disadvantages connected with their use under various circumstances. Book Elements of Life Insurance

Download or read book Elements of Life Insurance written by Miles Menander Dawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Life Insurance: Third Editions With Definitions of Life Insurance Terms The demand for this little book calls for a new edition, and the changes in life insurance as practiced in the United States which have taken place during a decade past have rendered it necessary to make this a revised edition as well. The surprising thing is that the princi ples of sound life insurance are so well established and so universal that even the great, and indeed startling, de partures in recent years from the former methods result in but few alterations of the text - and these relatively unimportant - and in yet fewer additions. An earnest attempt has been made to make the book yet simpler and more explicit than in the previous editions, and to exclude all that is mere opinion. A glossary has been added, giving the definitions of life insurance terms which are in common use, with references to pages of the book which discuss the subject more fully. In revising the book, its employment as a text-book in schools and colleges has been kept in mind, and especial efforts have been put forth to make it accurate and denni tive throughout. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Life Insurance Owing to these peculiar considerations, the study of the science of life insurance has been attended by greater difficulties than the study of other branches of insurance. Fortunately the statistics of hazards of lives are more complete than any other statistics employed in insurance. Without complete and tolerably accurate vital statistics, it would be a dangerous speculation to attempt to estimate the hazards of lives. Book The Life Insurance Company Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life Insurance Company Classic Reprint written by William Alexander and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Insurance Company The capitalist who invests his money in life insurance (and who sometimes makes expensive blunders through ignorance of fundamental truths) may find it of interest; so also may the financier, the legislator, the journalist, the sociologist, the student of political economy - for life in surance has become one of the greatest of financial forces, and has done as much to advance modern civilization as any other single influence. The student who enters upon the study of life insurance is like a traveler who seeks to follow an unfrequented trail. At first he will be in constant danger of losing his way, but after a time he will reach the beaten path and be able to follow it easily. Hence, although the effort has been to make this treatise comprehensive, the chief aim has been to make its earlier pages elementary and absolutely clear and simple. Book Principles and Practice of Life Insurance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles and Practice of Life Insurance Classic Reprint written by Nathan Willey and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Life Insurance The commutation column Rx, useful for the calcula tion of increasing benefits, has been added to the Ameri can Experience Table at and 4% interest. The values of several other functions, such as life annuities, single premiums, etc., have also been amplified by the addition of those for younger and older ages. The introductory explanations have been entirely re-written. They are divided in two sections. The first contains verbal explanations of terms commonly used in life insurance, and given in alphabetical order, so as to be suitable for ready reference. The second section deals with the scientific principles on which life insurance is based, enters into mathematical formulas, and explains the principles of life insurance to such an extent that any student can thereby attain familiarity with the tables which form the main portion of the work. The notation used in the mathematical demonstrations is in accordance with the svstem recommended by the Actuarial Society of America, and now generally used throughout the world for actuarial purposes. The International Congress of Actuaries in 1898 recommended that one uniform system be adopted in all countries, and this recommendation has been generally followed. The new notation is very easily understood. So far as possible, the initial letters of words are employed as a general basis, and these letters are modified by other subscript letters, printed in smaller type to the left or right of the principal symbol. Each symbol is explained as the necessity for using it arises; it is therefore un necessary to give here any detailed explanation or an index of the symbols.
