The Ninth Army was formed in May of 1944 under the command of General William Hood Simpson. By late August, it was ready to join the crusade in Europe. Known by its radio call sign “Conquer,” this brave army landed at Utah Beach, France, and joined General Patton’s Battle for Brest, finally capturing Brittany’s largest port in late September. The Ninth Army went on to become the only American army to fight under British Field Marshal Montgomery’s command, crossing the Rhine and playing a role in the Battle of the Bulge. The Ninth was involved in the reduction of the Wesel Pocket, Operation Varsity, the airborne drop across the Rhine, the reduction of the Ruhr Pocket, and then the “Race to Berlin.” The Ninth reached the Elbe River before it was stopped not by the enemy, but by high command. Following the end of hostilities, the army was dissolved. This new history of the Ninth covers all levels of the army’s activities from the responsibilities and duties of the higher echelon, the commanders through to combat stories of the units under its command and Medal of Honor actions.

Until very recently, however, this history has been almost completely lost due to a combination of historical accident, mistaken assumptions, and misplaced historical documents. Drawing upon a wide range of primary sources, most never before included in any book on the Ninth Amendment or the Bill of Rights, Kurt T. Lash recovers the lost history of the Ninth Amendment and explores how its original understanding can be applied to protect the people's retained rights today. The most important aspect of The Lost History of the Ninth Amendment is its presentation of newly uncovered historical evidence which calls into question the currently presumed meaning and application of the Ninth Amendment. The evidence not only challenges the traditional view regarding the original meaning of the Ninth Amendment, it also falsifies the common assumption that the Amendment lay dormant prior to the Supreme Court's "discovery" of the clause in Griswold v. As such, it commands the attention of the military specialist and layman alike as we mark the one hundredth anniversary of the war’s end. This work is the third volume of the three-volume Soviet official history of the Russian Civil War, which appeared during 1928-1930, just before the imposition of Stalinist orthodoxy. While the preceding volumes focused on the minutiae of the Red Army’s organizational development and military art, this volume provides an in-depth description and analysis of the civil war’s major operations along the numerous fronts, from the North Caucasus, the Don and Volga rivers, the White Sea area, the Baltic States and Ukraine, as well as Siberia and Poland. It also offers a well-argued case for the political reasons behind the Bolsheviks’ military strategy and eventual success against their White opponents. And while it is a certainly a partisan document with a definite political bias, it is at the same time a straightforward military history that manages to avoid many of the hoary myths that later came to dominate the subject. As such, it is easily the most objective account of the struggle to emerge from the Soviet Union before the collapse of the communist system in 1991.
