Book Quaternionic Contact Einstein Structures and the Quaternionic Contact Yamabe Problem

Download or read book Quaternionic Contact Einstein Structures and the Quaternionic Contact Yamabe Problem written by A. L. Carey and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolds. All conformal transformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A "3-Hamiltonian form" of infinitesimal conformal automorphisms of quaternionic contact structures is presented.

This series is the first to provide advanced introductions to mathematical science topics to advanced students of mathematics. Edited by the three joint heads of the London Taught Course Centre for PhD Students in the Mathematical Sciences (LTCC), each book supports readers in broadening their mathematical knowledge outside of their immediate research disciplines while also covering specialized key areas.

Book Nanophenomena at Surfaces

Download or read book Nanophenomena at Surfaces written by Michail Michailov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in nanoscale surface physics. It outlines contemporary trends in the field covering a wide range of topical areas: atomic structure of surfaces and interfaces, molecular films and polymer adsorption, biologically inspired nanophysics, surface design and pattern formation, and computer modeling of interfacial phenomena. Bridging "classical" and "nano" concepts, the present volume brings attention to the physical background of exotic condensed-matter properties. The book is devoted to Iwan Stranski and Rostislaw Kaischew, remarkable scientists, who played a crucial role in setting up the theoretical fundamentals of nucleation and crystal growth phenomena in the last century.

Book L2 Invariants Theory and Applications to Geometry and K Theory

Download or read book L2 Invariants Theory and Applications to Geometry and K Theory written by Wolfgang Lück and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In algebraic topology some classical invariants - such as Betti numbers and Reidemeister torsion - are defined for compact spaces and finite group actions. They can be generalized using von Neumann algebras and their traces, and applied also to non-compact spaces and infinite groups. These new L2-invariants contain very interesting and novel information and can be applied to problems arising in topology, K-Theory, differential geometry, non-commutative geometry and spectral theory. The book, written in an accessible manner, presents a comprehensive introduction to this area of research, as well as its most recent results and developments.

Book Partial Differential Relations

Download or read book Partial Differential Relations written by Misha Gromov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical theory of partial differential equations is rooted in physics, where equations (are assumed to) describe the laws of nature. Law abiding functions, which satisfy such an equation, are very rare in the space of all admissible functions (regardless of a particular topology in a function space). Moreover, some additional (like initial or boundary) conditions often insure the uniqueness of solutions. The existence of these is usually established with some apriori estimates which locate a possible solution in a given function space. We deal in this book with a completely different class of partial differential equations (and more general relations) which arise in differential geometry rather than in physics. Our equations are, for the most part, undetermined (or, at least, behave like those) and their solutions are rather dense in spaces of functions. We solve and classify solutions of these equations by means of direct (and not so direct) geometric constructions. Our exposition is elementary and the proofs of the basic results are selfcontained. However, there is a number of examples and exercises (of variable difficulty), where the treatment of a particular equation requires a certain knowledge of pertinent facts in the surrounding field. The techniques we employ, though quite general, do not cover all geometrically interesting equations. The border of the unexplored territory is marked by a number of open questions throughout the book.

Book The Herbarium Handbook

Download or read book The Herbarium Handbook written by Diane M. Bridson and published by Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. This book was released on 1998 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Contains chapters on the conservation of herbarium sheets and on the collection and curation of the larger algae. The chapter on computers has been completely rewritten and much enlarged, as have those on pests and treatments, larger fungi and economic botany. The sections on liquid preservatives and on pesticides have been revised to take into account new health and safety regulations. An essential reference work for herbarium managers and technicians and for all those who are involved with the making and maintenance of herbarium collections." --NHBS Environment Bookstore.

Book Immunobiology of Reproduction

Download or read book Immunobiology of Reproduction written by Joan S. Hunt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last several decades, many biologists have been intrigued with the "immunological paradox" of pregnancy, where maternal and fetal tissues peaceably coexist despite their genetic differences. With the development of new insights on the interactive components of the immune system as well as the generation of powerful new molecular and cellular tools, singular progress has been made in understanding immunological events that culminate in successful pregnancy. This volume contains the proceedings for the first US symposium on the "Immunobiology of Reproduction" held August 26 - 29, 1993 in Boston, Massachusetts. Papers address hemotopoietic cells in reproductive tissues; growth factors/cytokines in the female reproductive tract and placenta; growth factor networks in pregnancy loss and cancer; placental expression of major histocompatibility complex and associated genes; experimental models of MHC gene expression; and immunological aspects of human infertility.

Book Totally Nonnegative Matrices

Download or read book Totally Nonnegative Matrices written by Shaun M. Fallat and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Totally nonnegative matrices arise in a remarkable variety of mathematical applications. This book is a comprehensive and self-contained study of the essential theory of totally nonnegative matrices, defined by the nonnegativity of all subdeterminants. It explores methodological background, historical highlights of key ideas, and specialized topics. The book uses classical and ad hoc tools, but a unifying theme is the elementary bidiagonal factorization, which has emerged as the single most important tool for this particular class of matrices. Recent work has shown that bidiagonal factorizations may be viewed in a succinct combinatorial way, leading to many deep insights. Despite slow development, bidiagonal factorizations, along with determinants, now provide the dominant methodology for understanding total nonnegativity. The remainder of the book treats important topics, such as recognition of totally nonnegative or totally positive matrices, variation diminution, spectral properties, determinantal inequalities, Hadamard products, and completion problems associated with totally nonnegative or totally positive matrices. The book also contains sample applications, an up-to-date bibliography, a glossary of all symbols used, an index, and related references.
