Download or read book Linden New Jersey written by Lauren Pancurak Yeats and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-10-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Linden New Jersey contains an interesting array of images from the past 140 years, including pictures of some of the first settlers of the township to images of the parades that capture the changing facades of the downtown areas of the borough and city. Featured are some of the early industries that made Linden their home, a representation of some houses of worship, and the Linden schools through the years. In 1861, Linden Township was formed. It was composed mainly of Rahway, but included part of Elizabeth and a small piece of Union Township. In addition to present-day Linden, the city included what is now Roselle, Winfield Park, and a portion of Cranford. The borough of Linden emerged from the center of the township as an island municipality in 1882. The two communities consolidated on April 3, 1924, and officially became a city on January 1, 1925. As the twenty-first century approaches, so does the 75th anniversary of the city of Linden.
Download or read book Burnout written by Hannah Proctor and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hannah Proctor takes that feeling we all have, and names it again and again, helping us to resee the past and present of revolutionary struggle. A must-read." –Hannah Zeavin, Founding Editor, Parapraxis How to maintain hope in the face of despair In the struggle for a better world, setbacks are inevitable. Defeat can feel overwhelming at times, but it has to be endured. How then do the people on the front line keep going? To answer that question and to help readers roll with the punches, Hannah Proctor draws on historical resources to find out how revolutionaries and activists of the past kept a grip on hope. Burnout considers former Communards exiled to a penal colony in the South Pacific; a young Bolshevik fleeing the city in despair; an ex-militant on the analyst’s couch relating dreams of ruined landscapes; a trade union organiser seeking advice from a spiritual healer; and a group of feminists padding a room with mattresses to scream about the patriarchy. Jettisoning therapy talk and its stranglehold on our language, Proctor offers a different way forward - neither denial nor despair. Her cogent exploration of the ways militants make sense of their own burnout demonstrates that it is possible to mourn and organise at once, and to do both without compromise.

Download or read book In the Footsteps of Ethel Benjamin written by Janet November and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book solves some of the mysteries of Ethel's life and work: how many brothers and sisters did she have? Where did the family live? Why did she, as a 'first wave' feminist, act for hoteliers when many of the women's movement supported the prohibitionists? It shows some of the obstacles Ethel encountered to becoming a lawyer in the late nineteenth century all-male conservative legal profession. The book portrays Ethel's determination, hard work, mental ability and 'can do' attitude. The epilogue compares Ethel's story with that of some of her less well-known but notable successors in the mid twentieth century, and some of her famous successors. This is a book about how New Zealand women overcame obstacles to practice in the legal profession, once the sole preserve of men, some soaring through the 'glass ceiling' to high positions in public life."--Book jacket.
