Book Surfactants in Polymers Coatings Inks and Adhesives

Download or read book Surfactants in Polymers Coatings Inks and Adhesives written by David R. Karsa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface active agents are used as process aids in the production of polymers--as additives to impart or modify polymer properties--and in the formulation and further processing of polymeric systems for a variety of applications. In all these uses, the surfactants are used as 'effect chemicals,' to impart specific performance characteristics or properties to the base polymer or to enhance it performance when formulated for a specific end use. This volume focuses on those surfactant areas incorporating the greatest number of supplier and user companies. Authors have been selected from leading industrial and academic laboratories around the world. It provides an introduction to the underlying chemistry and technology in these industrial areas, and at the same time, highlights important recent developments. Surfactants in Polymers, Coatings, Inks and Adhesives is a book for surfactant researchers and for manufacturers and users of surfactants. In particular, surfactant chemists, analytical chemists, environmental chemists, users of surfactant formulations in the fields of specialty chemicals, polymers, and detergents, and health and safety personnel.

Download or read book Producing Power written by Sonja D. Schmid and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of how the technical choices, social hierarchies, economic structures, and political dynamics shaped the Soviet nuclear industry leading up to Chernobyl. The Chernobyl disaster has been variously ascribed to human error, reactor design flaws, and industry mismanagement. Six former Chernobyl employees were convicted of criminal negligence; they defended themselves by pointing to reactor design issues. Other observers blamed the Soviet style of ideologically driven economic and industrial management. In Producing Power, Sonja Schmid draws on interviews with veterans of the Soviet nuclear industry and extensive research in Russian archives as she examines these alternate accounts. Rather than pursue one “definitive” explanation, she investigates how each of these narratives makes sense in its own way and demonstrates that each implies adherence to a particular set of ideas—about high-risk technologies, human-machine interactions, organizational methods for ensuring safety and productivity, and even about the legitimacy of the Soviet state. She also shows how these attitudes shaped, and were shaped by, the Soviet nuclear industry from its very beginnings. Schmid explains that Soviet experts established nuclear power as a driving force of social, not just technical, progress. She examines the Soviet nuclear industry's dual origins in weapons and electrification programs, and she traces the emergence of nuclear power experts as a professional community. Schmid also fundamentally reassesses the design choices for nuclear power reactors in the shadow of the Cold War's arms race. Schmid's account helps us understand how and why a complex sociotechnical system broke down. Chernobyl, while unique and specific to the Soviet experience, can also provide valuable lessons for contemporary nuclear projects.

Book Surface Coatings for Protection Against Wear

Download or read book Surface Coatings for Protection Against Wear written by B G Mellor and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As wear is a surface or near surface phenomenon it has long been realised that the wear resistance of a component can be improved by providing a surface of different composition from the bulk material. Although this book concentrates on surface coatings, the distinction between surface coatings and the process of modifying the surface by changing its composition is not always clear, so some useful surface modification techniques are also considered.Surface coatings for protection against wear, consists of twelve chapters written by different authors, experts in their field. After a brief introductory chapter wear phenomena and the properties required from a coating are addressed. Chapter three covers coating characterisation and property evaluation relevant to wear resistance with an emphasis on mechanical testing of coatings. The next chapter provides an introduction to the various methods available to deposit wear resistant coatings. The following six chapters describe in detail wear resistant coatings produced by various deposition routes. Emphasis is placed on the microstructure property relationship in these coatings. Chapter eleven addresses coatings and hardfacings, produced from welding processes, specifically modern developments such as friction surfacing and pulsed electrode surfacing techniques. The final chapter is dedicated to future trends in both coating materials and coating processes.Surface coatings for protection against wear is essential for anyone involved in selecting coatings and processes and will be an invaluable reference resource for all engineers and students concerned with the latest developments in coatings technology. - Essential for anyone involved in selecting coatings and processes, engineers and students - Written by an international team of experts in the field
