Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Vatican II Catholic faith and practice were strong, rooted in the Gospels, their authenticity and sequence affirmed by Irenaeus. He was taught by Polycarp who was martyred rather than deny what he had learned about Christ from the apostles, in particular John. (Adv. Haer. III, I, 1). Since Vatican II, however, Catholic seminaries and universities have promoted an ahistorical "Markan Priority" theory that, at this writing, indefensibly deems it "untenable" that apostle Matthew wrote The Gospel according to Matthew and reduces all four Gospels to probable unwitnessed hearsay: usccb.org/bible/matthew/0, mark/0, luke/0, john/0, last paragraphs - uncertainty that may explain why few homilies now include the "hard sayings" of Jesus upon which salvation may well depend. The key claim of this theory is that because "You are Peter ..." (Mt 16:18-19) is not in Mark (8:27-30), Jesus never gave primacy to Peter. But Irenaeus wrote, "Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter." (Adv. Haer. III, I, 1). With Nero's agents listening, Peter would not have ended his ministry by proclaiming a "kingdom" to which he held the Keys. Sulpician Father Raymond E. Brown championed this Markan Priority Two-Source Hypothesis that reduces the Gospels to unwitnessed hearsay. In the Index of his last book - 878-page An Introduction to the New Testament (1997) and at least four others - "Irenaeus" is not found. Fr. Brown also dismissed the Early Church Fathers: "unless those writers had historical information they cannot answer historical questions." (Biblical Exegesis and Church Doctrine, 1985, 20). With the Imprimatur of Most Rev. Joseph F. Martino, then Bishop of the Scranton Diocese, Censor Librorum of Rev. Charles P. Connor, well-known to EWTN viewers and in full accord with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Catholic parents will find in this book an easy way to help their children, who lost their faith in college, recognize the treasure that awaits them upon their return. With discussion questions after each chapter, detailed Index, brief commentary on other major faiths, the 7-Step Outline in English with translations in Spanish, French, German, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Addenda clearing the historical-critical fog that hinders return to Catholic orthodoxy, The 7-Step Reason to be Catholic, 2nd Ed., republished, is well-suited for Catholic instruction.

Book The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments

Download or read book The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments written by Scott Weeman and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.

Book Heaven on Earth The Order and Meaning of Mass

Download or read book Heaven on Earth The Order and Meaning of Mass written by Ralph Barnett and published by eSoup Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We’re living through the greatest loss of faith in the history of the Catholic Church,” a refrain reverberating thru Catholic America. Likely, you are familiar with the statistics: · 25% percent decline in Mass attendance. · 15% of churches closed and/or consolidated. · 65% of Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence. · Catholicism, the largest Christian creed followed closely by fallen away Catholics. America’s religious decline is not new. Experts claim, “Christianity has been on decline since the removal of prayer from public schools in 1962.” Catholic school enrollment declined concurrently. Yet prayer was not removed from Catholic schools. Predictably, Mass attendance followed. What changed? Catholic authorities proffered explanations and recommendations; none of which stemmed the tide . . . a sure sign the root cause was not rightly identified. As a cradle-Catholic father, grandfather, and amateur student of Mass, I offer an assertion supported by my love of Catholicism, logic . . . and a book! “What changed” was the equivalent of removing the pillar of prayer from public schools . . . Mass was removed from Catholic catechesis - school, CCD, RCIA, adult formation, ambo, and domestic church. A cursory look at a Baltimore Catechism, the 1950-60s field manual for Catholics, reveals a 30-page segment, “Catechism of the Mass,” immersing students in liturgical details. A cursory look at current Catholic curricula reveals a paucity of information on Mass ranging from a few paragraphs in school texts to “take home” trifolds for CCD, RCIA, etc. Is Mass that important? Did you know Mass . . . · Is the most perfect way for man to praise and give thanks to God? · Is the only sacrifice perfect, pleasing, and acceptable to God? · Is the most sacred function of the Church, surpassing all others in efficacy? · Is the Church’s greatest prayer? · Is an offering for the whole Mystical Body of Christ? · Is the highest form of prayer for the faithful? · Is the Church’s #1 effort to save souls? · Is the same sacrifice Christ made on the Cross? · Is the perfect answer to prayer as it brings mercy and salvation Christ won for us? · Is required attendance every Sunday and six Holy Days a year but Communion only once? · Is the Source and Summit of our Faith? Seemingly, Mass is the answer to everything integral to Catholicism. Why is it not taught in Catholic education settings? How do we reverse the tide? Pope John Paul II: “Mass is Heaven on Earth. What we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy.” If Catholics realized Mass is tantamount to Heaven on Earth, would we be witnessing “the greatest loss of faith in the history of the Catholic Church?” Emphatically, “No.” As one Priest opined, “We’d have to double Masses and they’d be SRO.” We would witness the greatest flood of student enrollment and Mass attendance since the inception of Catholicism in America. We would have to double Catholic school classes and reopen shuttered schools and churches. Catholics must re-assess school, CCD, RCIA, adult formation and domestic church catechesis to make space for a deep dive into Mass. To fulfill the need, I submit a book series, “Heaven on Earth: The Order and Meaning of Mass:” · “Heaven on Earth” second edition text for adults. · “Curriculum” for students and educators. · “Workbook” of lesson reviews for students. “Heaven on Earth” is not a theological or academic treatise but a user-friendly, step-by-step guide to Mass for the faithful unlike anything available elsewhere. Author’s Promise: “You will never ever go to church, attend Mass, or receive Communion the same way again.”

Book excerpt: In Faithful Reason, the noted Catholic philosopher John Haldane explores various aspects of intellectual and practical life from a perspective inspired by Catholic thought and informed by his distinctive philosophical approach: 'Analytical Thomism'. Haldane's discussions of ethics, politics, education, art, social philosophy and other themes explain why Catholic thought is still relevant in today's world, and show how the legacy of Thomas Aquinas can benefit modern philosophy in its efforts to answer fundamental questions about humanity and its place within nature. Drawing on a Catholic philosophical tradition that is committed to concepts of the world's intrinsic intelligibility and the objectivity of truth, Faithful Reason's bold and insightful perspectives provide rich matter for debate, and food for further thought.

Book Stepping Out of the Brain Drain

Download or read book Stepping Out of the Brain Drain written by Michele R. Pistone and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping Out of the Brain Drain is an important contribution to the intensifying debate about highly skilled migration from developing to developed countries. Addressing the issue from the perspective of Catholic social thought, the authors demonstrate that both the economic and ethical rationales for the teaching's opposition to 'brain drain' have been undermined in recent years and show how the adoption of a less critical policy could provide enhanced opportunities for poor countries to accelerate their economic development.

Book Catholics of Consequence

Download or read book Catholics of Consequence written by Ciaran O'Neill and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For as far back as school registers can take us, the most prestigious education available to any Irish child was to be found outside Ireland. Catholics of Consequence traces, for the first time, the transnational education, careers, and lives of more than two thousand Irish boys and girls who attended Catholic schools in England, France, Belgium, and elsewhere in the second half of the nineteenth century. There was a long tradition of Irish Anglicans, Protestants, and Catholics sending their children abroad for the majority of their formative years. However, as the cultural nationalism of the Irish revival took root at the end of the nineteenth century, Irish Catholics who sent their children to school in Britain were accused of a pro-Britishness that crystallized into still recognisable terms of insult such as West Briton, Castle Catholic, Squireen, and Seoinin. This concept has an enduring resonance in Ireland, but very few publications have ever interrogated it. Catholics of Consequence endeavours to analyse the education and subsequent lives of the Irish children that received this type of transnational education. It also tells the story of elite education in Ireland, where schools such as Clongowes Wood College and Castleknock College were rooted in the continental Catholic tradition, but also looked to public schools in England as exemplars. Taken together the book tells the story of an Irish Catholic elite at once integrated and segregated within what was then the most powerful state in the world.
