Book excerpt: Tremendous progress has been made in the last few years in the growth, doping and processing technologies of the wide bandgap semiconductors. As a result, this class of materials now holds significant promis for semiconductor electronics in a broad range of applications. The principal driver for the current revival of interest in III-V Nitrides is their potential use in high power, high temperature, high frequency and optical devices resistant to radiation damage. This book provides a wide number of optoelectronic applications of III-V nitrides and covers the entire process from growth to devices and applications making it essential reading for those working in the semiconductors or microelectronics. Broad review of optoelectronic applications of III-V nitrides

Book Blue Laser and Light Emitting Diodes

Download or read book Blue Laser and Light Emitting Diodes written by Akihiko Yoshikawa and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realization of the semiconductor laser diodes (LDs) operating in the blue wavelength region had been a 'dream' for a long time for the scientists working on widegap materials until just a few years ago. Quite remarkable progress has been made in the last few years the dream has come true. The first ZnSe-based blue/green LD was fabricated about four years ago and its officially reported life-time in CW operation exceeds 100 hours now; it is quickly approaching a practical use level. Further, GaN-based blue LDs have also been realized. In this way, the progress in these research fields is quite rapid. The work includes articles on bulk growth, epitaxy, doping and characterization, blue LDs and LEDs, and future prospects in both ZnSe-based and GaN-based areas.

Book Dilute Nitride Semiconductors

Download or read book Dilute Nitride Semiconductors written by Mohamed Henini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-12-15 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - This book contains full account of the advances made in the dilute nitrides, providing an excellent starting point for workers entering the field. - It gives the reader easier access and better evaluation of future trends, Conveying important results and current ideas. - Includes a generous list of references at the end of each chapter, providing a useful reference to the III-V-N based semiconductors research community. The high speed lasers operating at wavelength of 1.3 μm and 1.55 μm are very important light sources in optical communications since the optical fiber used as a transport media of light has dispersion and attenuation minima, respectively, at these wavelengths. These long wavelengths are exclusively made of InP-based material InGaAsP/InP. However, there are several problems with this material system. Therefore, there has been considerable effort for many years to fabricate long wavelength laser structures on other substrates, especially GaAs. The manufacturing costs of GaAs-based components are lower and the processing techniques are well developed. In 1996 a novel quaternary material GaInAsN was proposed which could avoid several problems with the existing technology of long wavelength lasers. In this book, several leaders in the field of dilute nitrides will cover the growth and processing, experimental characterization, theoretical understanding, and device design and fabrication of this recently developed class of semiconductor alloys. They will review their current status of research and development. Dilute Nitrides (III-N-V) Semiconductors: Physics and Technology organises the most current available data, providing a ready source of information on a wide range of topics, making this book essential reading for all post graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the fields of Semiconductors and Optoelectronics - Contains full account of the advances made in the dilute nitrides, providing an excellent starting point for workers entering the field - Gives the reader easier access and better evaluation of future trends, conveying important results and current ideas - Includes a generous list of references at the end of each chapter, providing a useful reference to the III-V-N based semiconductors research community

Book Light Emitting Diodes

Download or read book Light Emitting Diodes written by E. Fred Schubert and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and fully updated, the second edition of this graduate textbook offers a comprehensive explanation of the technology and physics of LEDs such as infrared, visible-spectrum, ultraviolet, and white LEDs made from III-V semiconductors. Elementary properties such as electrical and optical characteristics are reviewed, followed by the analysis of advanced device structures. With nine additional chapters, the treatment of LEDs has been vastly expanded, including new material on device packaging, reflectors, UV LEDs, III-V nitride materials, solid-state sources for illumination applications, and junction temperature. Radiative and non-radiative recombination dynamics, methods for improving light extraction, high-efficiency and high-power device designs, white-light emitters with wavelength-converting phosphor materials, optical reflectors, and spontaneous recombination in resonant-cavity structures are discussed in detail. With exercises, solutions, and illustrative examples, this textbook will be of interest to scientists and engineers working on LEDs and graduate students in electrical engineering, applied physics, and materials science.

Book LED Packaging for Lighting Applications

Download or read book LED Packaging for Lighting Applications written by Shen Liu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first light-emitting diode (LED) was invented by Holonyak and Bevacqua in 1962, LEDs have made remarkable progress in the past few decades with the rapid development of epitaxy growth, chip design and manufacture, packaging structure, processes, and packaging materials. LEDs have superior characteristics such as high efficiency, small size, long life, low power consumption, and high reliability. The market for white LED is growing rapidly in various applications. It has been widely accepted that white LEDs will be the fourth illumination source to substitute the incandescent, fluorescent, and high-pressure sodium lamps. With the development of LED chip and packaging technologies, the efficiency of high power white LED will broaden the application markets of LEDs while changing the lighting concepts of our lives. In LED Packaging for Lighting Applications, Professors Liu and Luo cover the full spectrum of design, manufacturing, and testing. Many concepts are proposed for the first time, and readers will benefit from the concurrent engineering and co-design approaches to advanced engineering design of LED products. One of the only books to cover LEDs from package design to manufacturing to testing Focuses on the design of LED packaging and its applications such as road lights Includes design methods and experiences necessary for LED engineers, especially optical and thermal design Introduces novel LED packaging structures and manufacturing processes, such as ASLP Covers reliability considerations, the most challenging problem for the LED industry Provides measurement and testing standards, which are critical for LED development, for both LED and LED fixtures Codes and demonstrations available from the book’s Companion Website This book is ideal for practicing engineers working in design or packaging at LED companies and graduate students preparing for work in industry. This book also provides a helpful introduction for advanced undergraduates, graduates, researchers, lighting designers, and product managers interested in the fundamentals of LED design and production.
