Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history gives a comprehensive account of the division s exploits albeit with the occasional touch of heroics. The maps are disappointing in that while they show the areas of operations they lack tactical detail. There is, however, a good trench map of the divisional sector on Gallipoli. The photos are very much a bonus. Among the appendices is a thirty-one page Roll of Honour listing the dead and missing by battalions and units, though a footnote observes that complete casualty lists could not be obtained in all cases. The number of dead listed amount to 6,845, including two brigade commanders. Honours and Awards are also shown by units (five VCs in all). There is also a list showing the succession of HQ Staff and commanders down to battalion or equivalent level but without dates of appointment. Finally, and perhaps most annoying, there is no index. When, on 10th August 1914, Kitchener called for volunteers among the TF for service overseas (they had been intended for home service only) some ninety percent of the division accepted and a month later the division sailed for Egypt and thus had the distinction of being the first Territorial division to go overseas. In May 1915 it landed at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, and during the next few months it took part in the Second and Third Battles of Krithia, in the fighting for the Krithia Vineyard and the Achi Baba feature. Evacuation of the division began at the end of December 1915 and the last men were taken off on 9th January 1916. During the campaign it suffered 8,547 casualties - 395 officers and 8152 other ranks; two VCs were awarded. From Gallipoli it returned to Egypt and spent the rest of 1916 with the Canal Defences and in the Sinai Peninsula fighting the Turks. In March1917 it arrived on the Western front where it remained for the rest of the war, and when it ended the division had reached the outskirts of Maubeuge, a few miles south of Mons.

Book History of the East Lancashire Regiment

Download or read book History of the East Lancashire Regiment written by Lancashire Museum and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: the East Lancashire Regiment was extended to no less than seventeen battalions during the Great War, and was represented on every front from France to Mesopotamia, it will be readily understood that it has not been possible to record here all the deeds which made yet more honoured the name of the East Lancashire Regiment. But it is hoped that those who served with the Regiment will find something in these pages which will recall old memories, and that the younger generation will be enabled to gain some small insight into a life that the accident of birth has spared them from experiencing.Four members of the Regiment gained the Victoria Cross. Two of these lost their lives in winning this highest award to which a soldier can aspire, and one deliberately threw away his own life in order that his comrades might be saved from certain death.Of such material were the men made who went forth to fight for the honour and glory of their Regiment. If this book does anything to perpetuate their memory it will have served its purpose.

Book British Territorial Units 1914 18

Download or read book British Territorial Units 1914 18 written by Ray Westlake and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Army Reforms of 1906/07 the Secretary of State for War, Richard Burdon Haldane, provided for an expeditionary force the Regular Army supplemented by the old Militia and a new organisation intended for home defence, the Territorial Force. This new 'Citizen's Army' was formed by the transfer of the Honourable Artillery Company, Imperial Yeomanry and Volunteer Force, all with many years of service and tradition. At the outbreak of war, the Territorial Force was organised as per the Regular Army, with infantry battalions, artillery, engineers, supply and medical formations. This title takes a highly detailed and illustrated look at the badges and uniforms and the changing organisation of the British Territorial units during the Great War. It also covers the combat experiences of the men who soon found themselves in service overseas, in the thick of the fighting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Book History of the East Lancashire Royal Engineers

Download or read book History of the East Lancashire Royal Engineers written by Members of the Corps of Discovery and published by . This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the field engineers of two Territorial divisions in the Great War, the 42nd (1st/East Lancashire) Division and the 66th (2nd/East Lancashire) Division, though nearly all of it (220 pages) is devoted to the 42nd as it describes the fortunes of each of the field companies, 427th, 428th, 429th and the 42nd Divisional Signal Company in turn. In the case of the 66th the story of their engineers (430th, 431st, 432nd Companies and 66th Divisional Signal Company) is given in one continuous, 30-page narrative which embraces all companies. There is a very brief account of the third line units which did not go overseas. The Honours and Awards list includes awards to engineer personnel of both divisions, and the Roll of Honour of both divisions is made out by companies . After an introduction giving a brief account of the pre-war history of the Lancashire Volunteer and Territorial engineers the narrative begins, most usefully, with a diary of the movements of 42nd Divisional Engineers which opens on 4th August 1914 and then records, with dates, every move of any of the engineer units on and off the battlefields. This division served not only in Egypt in the early days of the war, but also at Gallipoli (May-Dec 1915), again in Egypt and the desert throughout 1916, transferring to the Western front in March 1917 where it remained for the rest of the war. There follow a summary of the war history of the divisional engineers as a whole and then detailed accounts of each field company in turn and the signal company. The 66th Divisional engineers concludes the book and for these, too, there is a calendar of all movements beginning with the arrival of the division in France at the end of February 1917, about the same time as the 42nd Division from Egypt. We then have a summary of the war history of the 66th Divisional engineers. Certainly for the 42nd Division this is an excellent history of the part played by its engineers
