Book excerpt: The Battalion served in France and Flanders for the duration of that dreadful war and its battle honours - from its last stand in the orchard of Oisy in 1914 when it was cut off and lost 120 men - to its part in the victory in Mormal Forest in 1918 are a testimony to the courage of its Irish officers and men. The Munsters served around Ypres, at Festubert, on the Somme, and at Passchendaele, and the accounts in this book are drawn from the eyewitness testimony of survivors, with additional material from Brigade and Battalion War Diaries. The book's author, Lt. Col. Jervis, was a former CO of the Battalion who wrote this fine history as a tribute to the men he served with.

Book excerpt: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work has doubtless its place among the books dealing with The Great War, being built up from narratives, letters, diaries, and personal interviews, often with the help of the principal actors in the events narrated. It is dedicated to the general reader, who wishes a coherent account of the Great War, an account which shall not make large demands on his previous knowledge and which is written in easy, readable style. The emphasis is definitely and intentionally on English action and English achievement. And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has the true heart of the military historian. Book Irish Voices from the Great War

Download or read book Irish Voices from the Great War written by Myles Dungan and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering study, first published in 1995, retains its rank as one of the most powerful histories ever written about Irish involvement in World War 1. This year, the centenary of the war, sees its timely re-publication as the Irishmen who fought in that war re-enter the national memory after decades of indifference and hostility. The gradual softening of attitudes over the last twenty years amid great historic change on the island of Ireland, is due in no small part to the efforts of historians, such as Myles Dungan, to tell thousands of forgotten stories. Drawing on the diaries, letters, literary works and oral accounts of soldiers, Myles Dungan tells some of the personal stories of what Irishmen, unionist and nationalist, went through during the Great War and how many of them drew closer together during that horror than at any time since. This volume deals with a selection of the most important battles and campaigns in which the three Irish Divisions participated.

Book Wherever the Firing Line Extends

Download or read book Wherever the Firing Line Extends written by Ronan McGreevy and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War was the biggest conflict in Irish history. More men served and more men died than in all the wars before or since that the Irish fought in. Often forgotten at home and written out of Irish history, the Irish soldiers and their regiments found themselves more honoured in foreign fields. From the first shot monument in Mons to the plaque to the Royal Irish Lancers who liberated the town on Armistice Day 1918, Ronan McGreevy takes a tour of the Western Front. At a time when Ireland is revisiting its history and its place in the world, McGreevy looks at those places where the Irish made their mark and are remembered in the monuments, cemeteries and landscapes of France and Flanders.

Book Kerry the Royal Munster Fusiliers

Download or read book Kerry the Royal Munster Fusiliers written by Alan Drumm and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballymullen Barracks in Tralee was the regimental depot of the Royal Munster Fusiliers prior to the establishment of the Irish Free State. It was through the barracks gates that Kerrymen enlisted for a career in the Munsters. Kerry and the Royal Munster Fusiliers examines the reasons why Kerrymen enlisted during the Great War, and how these citizens-turned-soldiers endured the World War they found themselves participating in. By using local sources, this book documents the rapidly changing political situation in Kerry, how support for the conflict diminished after 1916, and how this change affected the returning soldiers.

Book excerpt: It is a curious paradox that, while for many centuries there has been deep antagonism between the British and the Irish, the latter have fought the former's wars with exemplary courage and tenacity. This has never been better demonstrated than when, as a result of the Irish regiments' superb service in the South African War (Boer War) at the end of the 19th Century, Queen Victoria ordered the formation of the Irish Guards in 1900 as a mark of the Nation's gratitude. Even after the trauma of Partition, Irishmen continued to serve in Irish regiments in large numbers and the tradition continued today. Indeed during the Second World War a very significant number of the most influential generals were of Irish extraction.

Book excerpt: Daniel, a British soldier, has completed a deployment into India's North Western Frontier in the spring of 1914. He returns to London and the Army Reserves. Daniel embraces a new life and career with his family ... until Britain declares war. Daniel reports for duty and arrives in France with the British Expeditionary Force while the conflict is still a mobile war. During the retreat from Mons, Daniel's battalion receives orders to go into action. The Irish are eager, but the German Hammer appears unstoppable. Although a small French village will become synonymous with his regiment's valour, Daniel's wife, Mary, and sons Steven and David are in the dark without word of their loved one's fate. Finally, The Times publishes The Honour Roll. Daniel's name is among the columns of those listed as Missing. One uncertain word changes their lives forever. This stirring epic chronicles the courage of a soldier and his family through the entire tragedy that becomes World War 1. From the home front and its hospital wards, to the battle front and beyond, if you read only one book to commemorate the Great War's centennial, let it be My Kingdom. Based on a true story.

Book The Irish regiments in the Great War

Download or read book The Irish regiments in the Great War written by Timothy Bowman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British army was almost unique among the European armies of the Great War in that it did not suffer from a serious breakdown of discipline or collapse of morale. It did, however, inevitably suffer from disciplinary problems. While attention has hitherto focused on the 312 notorious ‘shot at dawn’ cases, many thousands of British soldiers were tried by court martial during the Great War. This book provides the first comprehensive study of discipline and morale in the British Army during the Great War by using a case study of the Irish regular and Special Reserve batallions. In doing so, Timothy Bowman demonstrates that breaches of discipline did occur in the Irish regiments but in most cases these were of a minor nature. Controversially, he suggests that where executions did take place, they were militarily necessary and served the purpose of restoring discipline in failing units. Bowman also shows that there was very little support for the emerging Sinn Fein movement within the Irish regiments. This book will be essential reading for military and Irish historians and their students, and will interest any general reader concerned with how units maintain discipline and morale under the most trying conditions.
