Book excerpt: English in Kenya is a stable post-colonial variety that is used as an inter-ethnic lingua franca in private domains, is the medium of instruction as well as the language spoken in parliament and court rooms. Yet so far no comprehensive research monograph on Kenyan English has been published that surveys its characteristic linguistic features. The present book closes this gap by giving a full description of the characteristic linguistic features of Kenyan English. The book provides an in-depth overview of Kenyan English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and also gives a meticulous account of the diachronic evolution of this post-colonial variety.

Book Investing in the Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya

Download or read book Investing in the Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya written by SDG Philantrophy Platform and published by United Nations Development Programme Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (UNDP IICPSD). This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SDGs provide a new, vital framework of goals, targets and indicators that demand coordination and collaboration across multiple thematic sectors and among a wide variety of players – both local and global. Success relies on policy coherence at national and subnational levels, diversified financing, variety in interventions and multi-stakeholder approaches. For philanthropists and social investors, the implementation of the SDGs opens up new avenues. Now, more than ever before, being strategic about philanthropic investments means forging partnerships and becoming a force for action in various multi-stakeholder coalitions under the SDG umbrella, as well as contributing to accountability in SDG implementation. The United Nations Development Group (UNDG) outlined a list of steps on how to mainstream the SDGs, including setting up cross-cutting and multi-stakeholder bodies to ensure policy coherence, collective policy-making, planning and monitoring for the SDGs with the participation of civil society, business, and philanthropy. Thus, it is more critical than ever for philanthropy and social investment actors to understand this emerging complex SDG ecosystem in the countries in which they work and how to engage, influence and benefit from coordination around the SDGs. This primer is written so that philanthropists might better understand what are the avenues for participation in the processes, policies and stakeholders involved in setting up the SDG roadmap in Kenya. The primer is an inaugural product developed jointly by teams of SDG Philanthropy Platform Kenya and Global and supported by Dalberg Research.

Book Handbook of Family Policies Across the Globe

Download or read book Handbook of Family Policies Across the Globe written by Mihaela Robila and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family policy holds a particular status in the quest for a more equitable world as it intersects the rights of women, children, and workers. But despite local and global efforts and initiatives, the state of family policy in different areas of the world varies widely. Through a cross-section of countries on six continents, Family Policies Across the Globe offers the current state of the laws concerning family life, structure, and services, providing historical, cultural, and socioeconomic context. Lucidly written chapters analyze key aspects of family definition, marriage, child well-being, work/family balance, and family assistance, reviewing underlying social issues and controversies as they exist in each country. Details of challenges to implementation and methods of evaluating policy outcomes bring practical realities into sharp focus, and each chapter concludes with recommendations for improvement at the research, service, and governmental levels. The result is an important comparative look at how governments support families, and how societies perceive themselves as they evolve. Among the issues covered: Sierra Leone: toward sustainable family policies. Russia: folkways versus state-ways. Japan: policy responses to a declining population. Australia: reform, revolutions, and lingering effects. Canada: a patchwork policy. Colombia: a focus on policies for vulnerable families. Researchers , professors and graduate students in the fields of social policy, child and family studies, psychology, sociology, and social work will find in Family Policies Across the Globe a reference that will grow in importance as world events continue to develop.

Book Disability and Social Justice in Kenya

Download or read book Disability and Social Justice in Kenya written by Nina Berman and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disability in Africa has received significant attention as a dimension of global development and humanitarian initiatives. Little international attention is given, however, to the ways in which disability is discussed and addressed in specific countries in Africa. Little is known also about the ways in which persons with disabilities have advocated for themselves over the past one hundred years and how their needs were or were not met in locations across the continent. Kenya has been on the forefront of disability activism and disability rights since the middle of the twentieth century. The country was among the first African states to create a legal framework addressing the rights of persons with disabilities, namely the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2003. Kenya, however, has a much longer history of institutions and organizations that are dedicated to addressing the specific needs of persons with disabilities, and substantial developments have occurred since the introduction of the legal framework in 2003. Disability and Social Justice in Kenya: Scholars, Policymakers, and Activists in Conversation is the first interdisciplinary and multivocal study of its kind to review achievements and challenges related to the situation of persons with disabilities in Kenya today, in light of the country’s longer history of disability and the wide range of local practices and institutions. It brings together scholars, activists, and policymakers who comment on topics including education, the role of activism, the legal framework, culture, the impact of the media, and the importance of families and the community.

Book Early Childhood Education for Holistic Development of the Child

Download or read book Early Childhood Education for Holistic Development of the Child written by M. Jacinta Adhiambo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is a fact that events that occur during early childhood that is, from prenatal until age eight are significant determinants of how well a child's brain matures, ability to develop language skills and to interact with society (Save the Children International, 2012; Lee & Hayden, 2009). This period shapes the rest of the child's life. Early Childhood education is among the many interventions whose aim is to reach all children during their early childhood and to tackle key issues that will affect them later on in their live. In the heart of this, this book presents seventeen articles selected from among articles presented during 2011 interdisciplinary session of the Faculty of Education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). The articles are presented in six major sections. These are: Access and equity in early childhood education, Curriculum issues in early childhood education, Teacher preparations and effective teaching in early childhood education, Financing early childhood education and related policy issues , Early childhood and special needs education, Monitoring of early childhood education and development for sustainable development. This book puts in place both empirical and discursive articles that will support advancement of the National structure for Early Childhood Care and Education. It is a useful resource for the ECCE sector and a basis for fruitful debate and discussion."--Back cover.
