Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deliciously entertaining new series by the bestselling author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency The many fans of Precious Ramotswe will find further cause for celebration in the protagonist of Alexander McCall Smith’s irresistibly funny trilogy, the eminent (if shamefully under-read) philologist Professor Dr. Mortiz-Maria von Igelfeld of the Institute at Regensburg. Unnaturally tall, hypersensitive to slights, and oblivious to his own frequent gaucheries, von Igelfeld is engaged in a never-ending quest to win the respect he knows is due him. Portuguese Irregular Verbs follows the Professor from a busman’s holiday researching old Irish obscenities to a flirtation with a desirable lady dentist. In The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs, von Igelfeld practices veterinary medicine without a license, transports relics for a schismatically challenged Coptic prelate and is mobbed by marriage-minded widows on board a Mediterranean cruise ship. In At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances, the final novel in the trilogy, we find our hero suffering the slings of academic intrigue as a visiting fellow at Cambridge, and the slings of outrageous fortune in an eventful Columbian adventure.

Book The 7 Pillars of God s Wisdom

Download or read book The 7 Pillars of God s Wisdom written by Herbert Lockyer and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Power and Wisdom The book of Proverbs says, “Wisdom has built her house, she has set up her seven pillars” (Proverbs 9:1). And the apostle Paul referred to Jesus Christ as “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24) to us. Legendary Bible teacher Herbert Lockyer unfolds the seven “pillars” of divine wisdom demonstrated in Christ’s incarnation and redeeming work on earth that the church upholds as essential truths of the faith. Understanding these pillars will help us to become more like Jesus and to fulfill God’s purposes, both here and in eternity: The Pillar of Mystery The Pillar of Incarnation The Pillar of Vindication The Pillar of Revelation The Pillar of Proclamation The Pillar of Belief The Pillar of Glorification The early church was dynamic in its witness because it continued steadfastly in these pillars of the Christian faith. Likewise, when we meditate reverently on the events and truths of Jesus’ coming to earth, we appreciate more deeply the great salvation that we have received, and we become more eager and able to share these liberating truths with others.

Book Seven Pillars of Wisdom

Download or read book Seven Pillars of Wisdom written by T. E. Lawrence and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the autobiographical account of the experiences of British soldier T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"), while serving as a liaison officer with rebel forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks of 1916 to 1918. In 1919 he had been elected to a seven-year research fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford, providing him with support while he worked on the book. In addition to being a memoir of his experiences during the war, certain parts also serve as essays on military strategy, Arabian culture and geography, and other topics. Lawrence re-wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom three times; once "blind" after he lost the manuscript while changing trains at Reading railway station. Lawrence acknowledged having been helped in the editing of the book by George Bernard Shaw. In the preface to Seven Pillars, Lawrence offered his "thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Shaw for countless suggestions of great value and diversity: and for all the present semicolons". Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) was a British archaeologist, military officer, and diplomat. He was renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916-18. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia—a title used for the 1962 film based on his First World War activities.

Book Wisdom Builds Her House on Seven Pillars

Download or read book Wisdom Builds Her House on Seven Pillars written by Sandra Crum and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about wisdomhow wisdom brings out knowledge with understanding. You cannot have one without the other, or it brings an imbalance in your walk with the Lord (Proverbs 11:1). Without a true balance, it is an abomination. What does this mean? Think about a scale. You have the middle with a bowl on both the right and left sides. There must be an even weight to have balance. This book brings out a just weight on how to apply wisdom to your everyday walk with the Lord in all ways. Wisdom builds up, but we must have knowledge to know where to apply our wisdom and to have an understanding of where each block goes in building up our house in the Lord.

Book The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom

Download or read book The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom written by Stephen M. Stigler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What gives statistics its unity as a science? Stephen Stigler sets forth the seven foundational ideas of statistics—a scientific discipline related to but distinct from mathematics and computer science. Even the most basic idea—aggregation, exemplified by averaging—is counterintuitive. It allows one to gain information by discarding information, namely, the individuality of the observations. Stigler’s second pillar, information measurement, challenges the importance of “big data” by noting that observations are not all equally important: the amount of information in a data set is often proportional to only the square root of the number of observations, not the absolute number. The third idea is likelihood, the calibration of inferences with the use of probability. Intercomparison is the principle that statistical comparisons do not need to be made with respect to an external standard. The fifth pillar is regression, both a paradox (tall parents on average produce shorter children; tall children on average have shorter parents) and the basis of inference, including Bayesian inference and causal reasoning. The sixth concept captures the importance of experimental design—for example, by recognizing the gains to be had from a combinatorial approach with rigorous randomization. The seventh idea is the residual: the notion that a complicated phenomenon can be simplified by subtracting the effect of known causes, leaving a residual phenomenon that can be explained more easily. The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom presents an original, unified account of statistical science that will fascinate the interested layperson and engage the professional statistician.

Book The Young T E Lawrence

Download or read book The Young T E Lawrence written by Anthony Sattin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate biography of the years that turned T. E. Lawrence into Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence of Arabia's heroism during the Arab revolt and his disgust at the subsequent betrayal of the Arabs in the postwar negotiations have become the stuff of legend. But T. E. Lawrence’s adventures in the Levant began long before the outbreak of war. This intimate biography is the first to focus on Lawrence in his twenties, the untold story of the awkward archaeologist from Oxford who, on first visiting "The East," fell in love with Arab culture and found his life's mission. Few people realize that Lawrence’s classic autobiography, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, was not the first book to carry that iconic title. Lawrence himself burned his original draft. Anthony Sattin here uncovers the story Lawrence wanted to conceal: the truth of his birth, his tortuous relationship with a dominant mother, his deep affection for an Arab boy, and the personal reasons that drove him from student to spy. Drawing on surviving letters, diaries, and accounts from close confidantes, Sattin brings a biographer’s eye for detail and a travel writer's verve to Lawrence's extraordinary journeys through the region with which his name is forever connected. In a masterful parallel narrative, The Young T. E. Lawrence charts the maturation of the man and the incipient countries he treasured, both coming of age at a time when the world’s foundations were coming undone.
