Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Particles and Nuclei, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA which was concerned with new developments in experimental and theoretical particle physics, nuclear physics, and cosmology, and the intersections of these fields which will help us understand our Universe more completely. The participants reported on new developments in instrumentation, including large-scale facilities, such as accelerators, that will be essential for future work.

Book Production Yield of Muon Induced Neutrons in Lead

Download or read book Production Yield of Muon Induced Neutrons in Lead written by Holger Kluck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this book is a major step towards understanding and eventually suppressing background in the direct search for dark matter particles scattering off germanium detectors. Although the flux of cosmic muons is reduced by many orders of magnitude in underground laboratories, the remaining energetic muons induce neutrons through various processes, neutrons that can potentially mimic a dark matter signal. This thesis describes the measurement of muon-induced neutrons over more than 3 years in the Modane underground laboratory. The data are complemented by a thorough modeling of the neutron signal using the GEANT4 simulation package, demonstrating the appropriateness of this tool to model these rare processes. As a result, a precise neutron production yield can be presented. Thus, future underground experiments will be able to reliably model the expected rate of muon-induced neutrons, making it possible to develop the necessary shielding concept to suppress this background component.

Book Tutorials in Radiotherapy Physics

Download or read book Tutorials in Radiotherapy Physics written by Patrick N. McDermott and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Topics Every Medical Physicist Should Know Tutorials in Radiotherapy Physics: Advanced Topics with Problems and Solutions covers selected advanced topics that are not thoroughly discussed in any of the standard medical physics texts. The book brings together material from a large variety of sources, avoiding the need for you to search through and digest the vast research literature. The topics are mathematically developed from first principles using consistent notation. Clear Derivations and In-Depth Explanations The book offers insight into the physics of electron acceleration in linear accelerators and presents an introduction to the study of proton therapy. It then describes the predominant method of clinical photon dose computation: convolution and superposition dose calculation algorithms. It also discusses the Boltzmann transport equation, a potentially fast and accurate method of dose calculation that is an alternative to the Monte Carlo method. This discussion considers Fermi–Eyges theory, which is widely used for electron dose calculations. The book concludes with a step-by-step mathematical development of tumor control and normal tissue complication probability models. Each chapter includes problems with solutions given in the back of the book. Prepares You to Explore Cutting-Edge Research This guide provides you with the foundation to read review articles on the topics. It can be used for self-study, in graduate medical physics and physics residency programs, or in vendor training for linacs and treatment planning systems.

This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the IX International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP 2006). This conference series is devoted to the progress of our knowledge about strangeness flavor in hadron and nuclear physics. Besides the traditional topics such as hadron structure, hypernuclear spectroscopy and weak decay of hypernuclei, a particular focus of this conference was on the properties of strange mesons and their binding in nuclear systems.

This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CIPANP 2009 explores areas of common interest between nuclear physicists, high energy (particle) physicists and astrophysicists. These areas range from studies of the strong interactions that bind nuclei together to physics of the very early Universe and include such topics as neutrinos, hadron physics, spin physics, heavy ion physics, QCD and heavy flavor physics. The Conference papers include descriptions of searches for "new physics", phenomena that cannot be accounted for by current theories.

Book 12th International Conference on Meson Nucleon Physics and the Structure of the Nucleon Menu 2010

Download or read book 12th International Conference on Meson Nucleon Physics and the Structure of the Nucleon Menu 2010 written by David Armstrong and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference will be of interest to researchers in theoretical and experimental particle and nuclear physics. The proceedings describe recent progress at understanding the structure and interactions of nuclei, and of their building blocks, protons, neutrons, together with mesons. The papers cover the latest experimental and theoretical developments in the field, and identify the opportunities for future directions. Finally, the use of nuclei as a theatre in which to probe the Standard Model of Particle Physics is explored.
