Book excerpt: "A history of Chinese law and justice from the imperial era to the post-Mao era, the book addresses the evolution and function of law codes and judicial practices in China's long history, and examines the transition from traditional laws and practices to their modern counterparts in the twentieth century and beyond. From the ancient times to the twenty-first century, there has been an enduring expectation or hope among the Chinese people that justice should and will be done in society, which is expressed in a popular Chinese saying, "Heaven has eyes." To the Chinese mind in the imperial era, justice was, and was to be achieved as, an alignment of Heavenly reason, state law, and human relations. Such a conception did not change until the turn of the twentieth century when Western-derived notions--natural rights, legal equality, the rule of law, judicial independence, and due process--came to replace the Confucian moral code of right and wrong, which was a fundamental shift in philosophical and moral principles that informed law and justice. The legal-judicial reform agendas since the beginning of the twentieth century (still ongoing today) stemmed from this change in the Chinese moral and legal thinking, but to materialize the said principles in everyday practices is a very different order of things that is much more difficult to accomplish, hence all the legal dramas including tragedies in the past one century or so. The book will lay out how and why that is the case"--

Book excerpt: HORIZON: GREG JOHNS, SCULPTURES 1970-2002 traces the ideas and career of the Adelaide-based artist from his first commission in the late 1970s through to participation in recent exhibitions in New York and Bahrain. The story is told by noted Adelaide writer and art critic, John Neylon of the Art Gallery of South Australia. His text examines all aspects of the artist's development as a creator of large-scale public sculptures and explains the philosophy that has shaped the work. The reader is led through a rich array of ideas and images relating to the use of sculptural form as a language in which the works serve as metaphors for the human psyche and the natural/cosmic systems that define our world. A number of key sculptures are examined in detail - as are issues surrounding public art and its reception within the community. The processes of commissioning, creating and installing the sculptures are described along with intimate glimpses into the creation of each work as it proceeds from the artist's studio, to the engineering works where it is fabricated, and then on to its intended site.

Book The Curation and Care of Museum Collections

Download or read book The Curation and Care of Museum Collections written by Bruce Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum curators enter the profession with a specialist subject qualification and yet at some point in their career, many curators find themselves in charge of a range of collections outside of their expert knowledge. Interpreting, curating and caring for mixed collections demands of curators a wide range of knowledge and understanding. The Curation and Care of Museum Collections is designed to give curators the fundamental information and confidence they need to manage and care for all of the collections within their responsibility, regardless of their previous training and experience. Comprising two sections – Museum Collections, and Collection Development and Care – the chapters cover archaeology, art, history, military and natural sciences collections, as well as heritage properties. Every chapter in the book is focused on one type of collection, but all chapters in the collection management section contain advice on topics such as organisational philosophy, documentation, legal issues and materials in order to provide a useful and comprehensive guide to managing collections. The collection care section is structured in the same way, considering the issues of storage; display; handling; moving; packing; housekeeping; health and safety; emergency preparedness; and pest, pollution, environmental, light and vibration management. The contributors to this book are experienced museum professionals, each with their own specialism and a deep understanding of what it means to work in the context of mixed collections. Providing a highly practical guide, The Curation and Care of Museum Collections is essential reading for curators working in all types of museums, galleries and heritage sites, and for students of museology courses around the world.
