Book Authoritarian Populism in Malaysia

Download or read book Authoritarian Populism in Malaysia written by A. Munro-Kua and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-11-13 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socio-economic and political issues are dealt with selectively within a chronological historical framework, covering the dramatic colonial impact of 1940-60 until the present day. The state is examined from the point of view of social class as well as communalism, to explain the dominance of the ruling coalition over the 37 years since independence. The author argues that authoritarian-populism is the concept that best fits the apparent paradox of an enduring regime via the ballot box, and the extensive restrictions on the scope of democracy, particularly through the repressive apparatus of detention without trial. The underlying theme is a critique and explanation of Malaysia's human rights record.

Book An Economic History of Malaysia c 1800 1990

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Economic History of Malaysia, c.1800-1990 , provides the first general history of the Malaysian economy over the past two centuries, including a survey of the pre-colonial era. A unique feature is that it integrates the historical experiences of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak as a case study in the onset of modern economic growth. Particular attention is paid to explaining Malaysia's signal success in achieving a relatively smooth shift away from the primary commodity export economy of the colonial period to near-NIC status by 1990.

Book Private Health Providers in Developing Countries

Download or read book Private Health Providers in Developing Countries written by Sara Bennett and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New ideas on the role of the state in developing countries have considerable implications for the social sectors, especially health. Certain international organizations have advocated a larger role for private sector health care providers and many developing country governments have adopted this approach. Yet, until now, very little evidence has existed about how shifting the balance between public and private roles might affect equity, and the quality and efficiency of health care. This book presents the results from a coordinated programme of research on the private health care sector including studies carried out by Asian, African and Latin American researchers. The conceptual chapters draw upon both industrialized and developing country literature to describe the intellectual terrain, analyse the key issues and summarize experience to date. This book will help increase understanding of the private sector, as well as illustrating the contentious issues involved in privatization. It will be useful to students and academics involved in international public health courses, and to health policy makers in developing countries.
