Book excerpt: Hydrological Drought: Processes and Estimation Methods for Streamflow and Groundwater, Second Edition provides a comprehensive review of processes and estimation methods for streamflow and groundwater drought. It includes a qualitative conceptual understanding of drought features and processes, a detailed presentation of estimation methods and tools, practical examples and impacts relevant for operational practice. The drought phenomenon and its diversity across the world are illustrated using a global set of daily streamflow series, whereas regional and local aspects of drought are studied using a combination of hydrological time series and catchment information. Hydrological Drought: Processes and Estimation Methods for Streamflow and Groundwater, Second Edition concludes with human impacts, including climate change impacts on drought, drought forecasting and early warning and examples of procedures on how to manage water during drought. The majority of the examples are taken from regions where the rivers run most of the year, but not exclusively. The material presented ranges from well-established knowledge and analysing methods to recent developments in drought research. Its nature varies accordingly, from a more traditional textbook and clear overview to that of a research paper, which introduces recent approaches and methodologies for drought analysis. Includes a number of innovative tools (self-guided tours, worked examples and software) to support both the understanding and teaching of different methods for evaluating drought severity, human impacts, ecological effects of drought and regional methods that enable estimation Offers applications/demonstrations using a comprehensive database of streamflow and thematic data from a large number of national and international agencies, which illustrate how data are used when evaluating drought severity Presents the state of the art of hydrological drought, including well established knowledge as well as recent developments in drought research

Book The 1988 92 drought in its historical perspective

Download or read book The 1988 92 drought in its historical perspective written by S J. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1988-92, the south and east of England were subjected to drought conditions. Data from 10 catchments and three groundwater level records were analysed using runoff and groundwater deficit indices to place the drought in its historical perspective. In parts of eastern England the drought was the most extreme - in terms of runoff deficit-for at least 150 years. It was less notable in other parts of southern England, but still extreme.

Book The Hydrology of the UK

Download or read book The Hydrology of the UK written by Mike Acreman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hydrology of the UK assesses the changing hydrology of the UK, focusing on key issues that affect the fundamental hydrological processes and have important implications for water resource management, flood risk and environmental quality. The bookis divided into 3 sections: Section 1 examines the causes of change to the hydrology of the UK, including the impact of climate change, land use and geomorphological change, and dam construction. Section 2 assesses the effects of these pressures on UK rivers, goundwater, lakes, ponds, reservoirs and wetlands, looking at water quality, degradation, pollution and protection. Section 3 examines the responses of goverment organisations responsible for planning and management of water, including Environment Agencies, British Hydrological Society and the growing urgency for a World Hydrology Initiative. Change will continue to be a major feature of UK hydrology in the future. This book provides an understanding of the changing hydrology of the UK and the international scene today and looks to the needs for the future.

Book Regional Climates of the British Isles

Download or read book Regional Climates of the British Isles written by Julian Mayes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate and the effects of global warming are commanding unprecendented interest as climates grow more dynamic and changeable. How does global warming change patterns of climate? Why is the weather and climate of the British Isles so variable? Regional Climates of the British Isles presents a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the diverse climate of the British Isles. Examining the ways in which regional climates evolve from the interplay of meteorological conditions and geography of the British Isles, leading climatologists provide detailed explanations of the climatic characteristics of eleven regions of the British Isles. Climatic distinctiveness and local weather contrasts are described for each region, together with a summary of climatic data from 1961 to the present. Reviewing the history and causes of climatic change and evaluating regional models, Regional Climates of the British Isles offers an important analysis of climatic variations. Examining future climatic change and its likely consequences, the authors acknowledge the need for regionally diverse responses to the greenhouse effect.
