Book excerpt: The intriguing hilltop archaeological sites known as cerros de trincheras span almost three millennia, from 1250 BC to AD 1450. Archaeologists have long viewed them as a unitary phenomenon because they all have masonry architecture and occur mostly on low volcanic peaks. Scattered across the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, these sites received little comprehensive research until the 1980s. This first volume in the Amerind Studies in Archaeology series from the Amerind Foundation documents considerable variability among trincheras sites with respect to age, geographic location, and cultural affiliation. This multi-author volume integrates a remarkable body of new data representing a textbook-like array of current research issues and methodologies in the archaeology of the region. Scholars from the United States and Mexico offer original research on trincheras sites in Chihuahua, Sonora, Arizona, and New Mexico. Scales of focus range from intensive intrasite sampling to the largest contiguous survey in the region. Authors incorporate spatial analyses, artifact studies, environmental and subsistence data, ethnographic analogs, ethnohistorical records, cross-cultural comparisons, archaeology, and archival resources. Because the class was designed primarily for avocational archaeologists, the guide describes the painted ceramics and prehistory of the region in an informal and easy-to-understand format. The guide focuses on the time between a.d. 650 and 1450 when painted pottery was made. The focus is painted pottery because it encodes diverse social, ideological, functional, and temporal information. The pottery discussed in this guide represents ceramics commonly found in southeastern Arizona, centering on the Garden Canyon site at Fort Huachuca. To set the stage, the authors provide a history of archaeological research in southeastern Arizona, an overview of culture history between a.d. 650 and 1450, and comments on the history and use of pottery classification in the Southwest. The guide focuses on lesser-known and poorly described ceramics of the region, such as Babocomari, Dragoon, San Simon, and Trincheras pottery, using the framework of ceramic tradition as a heuristic device. Black-and-white and color illustrations richly display the diversity of ceramic design and form."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunset Mesa Ruin lies near the confluence of the Rillito and Santa Cruz Rivers in the northern Tucson Basin. First recorded in the late 1930s by Frank Midvale, the site contains two components: a prehistoric Rincon phase Hohokam settlement dating between A.D. 1000 and 1100 and a historical-period component centered on a three-room adobe dating to the late nineteenth century. Much of the report focuses on Rincon phase settlement and subsistence. The authors use data collected from the excavation of a discrete residential cluster of five pit houses to document a sequential series of small courtyard groups. Excavation of a canal segment provides the authors the opportunity to investigate Hohokam irrigation practices in the Tucson Basin, which differ dramatically from their better-known counterparts in the Phoenix Basin.

Their story is told through archaeological evidence gained at the Houghton Road site, located in the eastern Tucson Basin of southern Arizona. The unusual architecture, material culture, mortuary practices, and subsistence remains are used to explore the poorly known Early Formative period. The lifeways of this time represent a transition between the preceding Late Archaic period and the later ceramic period cultures of southern Arizona. Data collected at the Houghton Road site indicate an indigenous farming culture that was fundamentally distinct from the later and better known Hohokam culture that has dominated archaeological thought about the desert Southwest.
