As Canadians we have felt that in the passing of John Buchan, Lord Tweedsmuir, we have lost a good friend, a great and cultured scholar, and one who really understood our ambitions, our strivings and our ideals. Some of his words I would specially wish to emphasize. (1) In speaking in our own Convocation Hall when he received an honorary degree in 1935, he said: If the main function of a university is, as I believe it to be, the guardianship of the central culture of mankind, the trusteeship of humane learning, then the preservation of this spiritual democracy must be a vital part of its purpose.
