Book excerpt: In the fall of 1989, the Archaeological and Historical Research Institute (AHRI) entered into negotiations with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to establish a five-year field school at Fort Craig beginning in June of 1990. The project was designed to serve a number of purposes: (a) to operate an archaeological field school for the training of students and the interested public; (b) to assess the nature and extent of cultural resources at the site and to serve as a guide for any future research that may be undertaken; and (c) to establish a foundation for the BLM's public interpretation program at the site. The five seasons of fieldwork were conducted from 1990 to 1994 during the summer and fall. This report describes the results of the archaeological excavations and historical records search conducted by the AHRI at the Fort Craig National Historic site.

Book Indians Infants and Infantry

Download or read book Indians Infants and Infantry written by Merrill J. Mattes and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years of the Indian uprisings in the West, Elizabeth Burt followed her husband, Major Andrew Burt, from one lonely outpost to another, with their three small children, a crate of chickens, and a cow in tow. Indians, Infants, and Infantry, based largely on a 1912 manuscript Mrs. Burt derived from now-lostøletters and diaries, provides an intimate glimpse of life at Forts Kearney, Bridger, Laramie, and C. F. Smith from the 1860s through the 1890s. Historical events do not dwarf but only heighten the half-century love affair of a remarkable woman and a soldier whose distinguished career stretched from the Civil to the Spanish-American war. In addition to Mrs. Burt's manuscripts, Merrill J. Mattes drew on army records and other primary sources.

  • Author : Peter Scholliers
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2024-01-11
  • ISBN : 135036178X
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book A History of Bread written by Peter Scholliers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, everything revolved around bread. Providing more than half of people's daily calories, bread was the life-source of Europe for centuries. In the middle of 19th century, a third of household expenditure was spent on bread. Why, then, does it only account for 0.8% of expenditure and just 12% of daily calories today? In this book, Peter Scholliers delves into the history of bread to map out its defining moments and people. From the price revolution of the 1890s that led to affordable and pure white bread, to the taste revolution of the 1990s that ushered in healthy brown bread, he studies consumers, bakers and governments to explain how and why this food that once powered an entire continent has fallen by the wayside, and what this means for the modern age. From prices and consumption to legislation and technology, Scholliers shows how the history of bread has been shaped by subtle cultural shifts as well as top-down decisions from ruling bodies. From the small home baker to booming factories, he follows changes in agriculture, transport, production and policy since the 19th century to explain why bread, once the centre of everything, is not so today.
