Book The 141st Signal Battalion Experience in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm

Download or read book The 141st Signal Battalion Experience in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm written by Donald E. Fowler and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 141st Signal Battalion, 1st Armored Division, VII Corps, participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, deploying from their forward location in Ansbach, Germany. The deployment created many unique challenges, which had never been considered in training. In addition, operations in the Southwest Asia theater were very different from those practiced in Europe. This monograph examines some of the most significant challenges that confronted the 141st, and focuses on issues where we fought differently than we trained or differently than doctrine stipulated. It will cover pre-deployment, deployment (including combat), and re-deployment phases, and will address topic areas of personnel, training, operations, logistics, and morale. It is not intended to be a comprehensive 'lessons learned' document, rather a discussion of those issues the battalion commander considers the most important. Through these examinations, perhaps future doctrine, training, and planning factors can be more realistically developed.

Book United States Army Special Forces In DESERT SHIELD DESERT STORM How Significant An Impact

Download or read book United States Army Special Forces In DESERT SHIELD DESERT STORM How Significant An Impact written by Major William M. Johnson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the contributions made by the U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) during the Persian Gulf conflict. Particular emphasis is placed on each mission performed by the SF during operations DESERT SHIELD/ DESERT STORM. Emphasis is placed initially on the building-block foundation of how a Special Forces Group (Airborne) is organized, paying particular attention to the operational A-detachment and the makeup of the SF soldier, which is paramount to this study. Brief accounts and descriptions are made of the various missions assigned to SF's coalition warfare support, which involved providing "ground truth" and close air support to the Arab-allied units, border surveillance; direct action; special reconnaissance; and combat search and rescue. This provides a base of knowledge into the myriad of operations conducted by the SF during Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM. The study concludes by examining published quotes from key leadership within the Department of Defense which provides this study with a measurable means of determining what significance the missions executed by the SF did have on the success of DESERT SHIELD/STORM.

Book The 54th Forward Support Battalion in Desert Shield Desert Storm

Download or read book The 54th Forward Support Battalion in Desert Shield Desert Storm written by Roslyn M. Goff and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From May 31, 1989 to June 6, 1991, I commanded the 54th Forward Support Battalion (FSB) supporting Third Brigade, Third Armor Division in Friedberg, Germany. This great battalion has many achievements to its credit but none so outstanding as its performance in the Southwest Asian Theater of Operations from early January to mid June 1991. I write this monograph for several reasons. First, to give due credit to the incredible courage and determination of the soldiers who never failed to surprise me with what they accomplished in the most trying of circumstances. Second, to illustrate that there is no substitute for training in preparation for war. Lastly, to discuss several logistic issues that require the attention of the Army leadership. I discuss the experience from the perspective of a forward deployed CSS commander. Therefore, a good deal of the discussion focuses on logistics rather than the details of battle. However, Appendix A provides a general timeline that may aid the reader. At Appendix B is the VII Corps Deployment and Plan of attack in which Third Armor Division participated. it will help place the reader geographically. At Appendix Care the graphics of the Third Armor Division's campaign, Operation Desert Spear 24-28 February 1991.

Book Moving the Force

Download or read book Moving the Force written by Scott W. Conrad and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without oil, no engine can run. "Movement" is the oil that enables America's military forces to sustain an operation, and nothing happens until something moves! As America's military priorities are reordered, the ability to move quickly, sustain forces anywhere in the world, and pre-position equipment and materiel near likely areas of crisis is more important than ever. Because of the apparent ease of movement during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, however, decision makers may be prone to misinterpret the lessons of the Gulf War and fail to address movement capabilities properly for the future. A good example is a recent Congressional decision to divert funds from slated improvements to the Army's afloat pre-positioning capability to the building of an amphibious assault ship. The capacity to foster global stability and defend our national interests depends upon correct long-range planning for transport. Logistics, especially mobility, has long been a bill payer for combat equipment, so perhaps a reappraisal is in order. Lessons from the Gulf War can help reshape America's defense transportation system for the post-Cold War era. Commitment to a balanced and unified mobility strategy should provide the most cost-effective, rapidly deployable, and sustainable combat capability. Regional focus, particularly in a multiple-conflict scenario, and reduced forward presence will significantly increase America's reliance on movement in the future. Careful restructuring of military movement capabilities will lessen the risks of distance and time in an unstable world and contribute to the economic well-being of the nation. To do less might invite confrontation with adversaries willing to test the substance and purpose of U.S. reach.

Download or read book Desert Storm written by Michael J. Mazarr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Saddam Hussein's first bold threats in 1990 to the stunning ground phase of Desert Storm in early 1991, the crisis in the Gulf captured the world's attention. This high-tech, low-cost war was televised nightly from beginning to end, accompanied by on-the-spot interpretations of strategy and its implications. But what did we learn from this crisis? Did the United States bungle its attempts at discouraging Saddam's aggressive actions, or is deterrence simply not a reliable foreign policy tool? Are chemical weapons truly the "poor man's atom bomb"? Does the war represent a good model for future crises, or did circumstances make this war more of an anomaly than a precedent? How did the ail-volunteer U.S. force perform? By combining exciting, detailed vignettes of the crisis with insightful discussions of its consequences, this book opens up an informed debate concerning the true military and geopolitical lessons of the conflict. Representing a distillation of the best thinking on defense and foreign policy in Washington, Desert Storm also incorporates the testimony of the inside players during the crisis—the people who actually planned and fought the war. Combining academic rigor and in-depth military expertise, the authors challenge the complacency of the emerging conventional wisdom regarding the conflict, taking us beyond mere chronicling and instant analysis to a riveting reenactment of the war and the serious consideration of its long-term implications.
