Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix Mathematics is a reference work for users of matrices in all branches of engineering, science, and applied mathematics. This book brings together a vast body of results on matrix theory for easy reference and immediate application. Each chapter begins with the development of relevant background theory followed by a large collection of specialized results. Hundreds of identities, inequalities, and matrix facts are stated rigorously and clearly with cross references, citations to the literature, and illuminating remarks. Twelve chapters cover all of the major topics in matrix theory: preliminaries; basic matrix properties; matrix classes and transformations; matrix polynomials and rational transfer functions; matrix decompositions; generalized inverses; Kronecker and Schur algebra; positive-semidefinite matrices; norms; functions of matrices and their derivatives; the matrix exponential and stability theory; and linear systems and control theory. A detailed list of symbols, a summary of notation and conventions, an extensive bibliography with author index, and an extensive index are provided for ease of use. The book will be useful for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as for researchers and practitioners in all branches of engineering, science, and applied mathematics.

Book Linear Algebra with Applications

Download or read book Linear Algebra with Applications written by Gareth Williams and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introductory courses in Linear Algebra can be taught in a variety of ways and the order of topics offered may vary based on the needs of the students. Linear Algebra with Applications, Alternate Eighth Edition provides instructors with an additional presentation of course material. In this edition earlier chapters cover systems of linear equations, matrices, and determinants. The more abstract material on vector spaces starts later, in Chapter 4, with the introduction of the vector space R(n). This leads directly into general vector spaces and linear transformations. This alternate edition is especially appropriate for students preparing to apply linear equations and matrices in their own fields. Clear, concise, and comprehensive--the Alternate Eighth Edition continues to educate and enlighten students, leading to a mastery of the matehmatics and an understainding of how to apply it. New and Key Features of the Alternate Eighth Edition: - Updated and revised throughout with new section material and exercises included in every chapter. - Provides students with a flexible blend of theory, important numerical techniques and interesting relevant applications. - Includes discussions of the role of linear algebra in many areas such as the operation of the Google search engine and the global structure of the worldwide air transportation network. - A MATLAB manual that ties into the regular course material is included as an appendix. These ideas can be implemented on any matrix algebra software package. A graphing calculator manual is also included. - A Student Solutions Manual that contain solutions to selected exercises is available as a supplement, An Instructor Complete Solutions Manual containing worked solutions to all exercises is also available.

Book Advanced Calculus Revised Edition

Download or read book Advanced Calculus Revised Edition written by Lynn Harold Loomis and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Download or read book Lectures on Matrices written by J. H. M. Wedderburn and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1934-12-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the organization and presentation of the material, however, which make the peculiar appeal of the book. This is no mere compendium of results--the subject has been completely reworked and the proofs recast with the skill and elegance which come only from years of devotion. --Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society The very clear and simple presentation gives the reader easy access to the more difficult parts of the theory. --Jahrbuch uber die Fortschritte der Mathematik In 1937, the theory of matrices was seventy-five years old. However, many results had only recently evolved from special cases to true general theorems. With the publication of his Colloquium Lectures, Wedderburn provided one of the first great syntheses of the subject. Much of the material in the early chapters is now familiar from textbooks on linear algebra. Wedderburn discusses topics such as vectors, bases, adjoints, eigenvalues and the characteristic polynomials, up to and including the properties of Hermitian and orthogonal matrices. Later chapters bring in special results on commuting families of matrices, functions of matrices--including elements of the differential and integral calculus sometimes known as matrix analysis, and transformations of bilinear forms. The final chapter treats associative algebras, culminating with the well-known Wedderburn-Artin theorem that simple algebras are necessarily isomorphic to matrix algebras. Wedderburn ends with an appendix of historical notes on the development of the theory of matrices, and a bibliography that emphasizes the history of the subject.
