Book excerpt: Surveying the artistic and cultural scene in the era of Trump In a world where truth is cast in doubt and shame has gone missing, what are artists and critics on the left to do? How to demystify a political order that laughs away its own contradictions? How to mock leaders who thrive on the absurd? And why, in any event, offer more outrage to a media economy that feeds on the same? Such questions are grist to the mill of Hal Foster, who, in What Comes after Farce?, delves into recent developments in art, criticism, and fiction under the current regime of war, surveillance, extreme inequality, and media disruption. Concerned first with the cultural politics of emergency since 9/11, including the use and abuse of trauma, conspiracy, and kitsch, he moves on to consider the neoliberal makeover of aesthetic forms and art institutions during the same period. A final section surveys signal transformations in art, film, and writing. Among the phenomena explored are machine vision (images produced by machines for other machines without a human interface), operational images (images that do not represent the world so much as intervene in it), and the algorithmic scripting of information that pervades our everyday lives. If all this sounds dire, it is. In many respects we look out on a world that has moved, not only politically but also technologically, beyond our control. Yet Foster also sees possibility in the current debacle: the possibility to pressure the cracks in this order, to turn emergency into change.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Like a geyser that has been reticent for far too long, Alexis Pope's THAT WHICH COMES AFTER erupts. These urgent & irreverent poems about motherhood, depression, anxiety, and status updates weave together to form one grandiose Mediation on growing into adulthood in the midst of a toxic relationship. In the vein of Eileen Myles and Anne Carson, THAT WHICH COMES AFTER is a book that changes books & cements Pope as "the voice of her generation" (Jenny Boully), pointing us towards the immense immediacy of torment, of tenderness, and--ultimately--of rebirth.

Book What Comes after Entanglement

Download or read book What Comes after Entanglement written by Eva Haifa Giraud and published by Duke University Press Books. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By foregrounding the ways that human existence is bound together with the lives of other entities, contemporary cultural theorists have sought to move beyond an anthropocentric worldview. Yet as Eva Haifa Giraud contends in What Comes after Entanglement?, for all their conceptual power in implicating humans in ecologically damaging practices, these theories can undermine scope for political action. Drawing inspiration from activist projects between the 1980s and the present that range from anticapitalist media experiments and vegan food activism to social media campaigns against animal research, Giraud explores possibilities for action while fleshing out the tensions between theory and practice. Rather than an activist ethics based solely on relationality and entanglement, Giraud calls for what she describes as an ethics of exclusion, which would attend to the entities, practices, and ways of being that are foreclosed when other entangled realities are realized. Such an ethics of exclusion emphasizes foreclosures in the context of human entanglement in order to foster the conditions for people to create meaningful political change.

Download or read book After Saturday Comes Sunday written by Elizabeth Natalie Kendal and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-Christian West is in decline, revived Islam is on the rise, and Mesopotamia (Syria-Iraq), the cradle of civilization, has become ground zero in a battle for civilization. Despised as infidels (unbelievers) and kafir (unclean), Mesopotamia's indigenous Christian peoples are targeted by fundamentalist Muslims and jihadists for subjugation, exploitation, and elimination. Pushed deep into the fog of war, buried under a mountain of propaganda, and rendered invisible by a shroud of silence, they are betrayed and abandoned by the West's "progressive" political, academic, and media elites who cling to utopian fantasies about Islam while nurturing deep-seated hostility towards Christianity. If they are to survive as a people in their historic homeland, the Christians of Mesopotamia will need all the help they can get. If Western civilization is to survive as a force in its historic heartland (Europe), then we had better start seeing, hearing, and believing the Christians of the Middle East, for their plight prefigures our own.

Download or read book Next written by Park Linscomb and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know everyone dies, but then what? Our world can offer plenty of theories and opinions about the afterlife: reincarnation, oblivion, judgment, purgatory, Heaven, Nirvana, and Hell, to list only the well known ones. But what's true and what's not? Can we afford to be surprised? Do we really want to be surprised, especially when there is reliable information about it? The Bible calls God's promises about the afterlife "hope", but Christian hope is more than just a happy wish. It is a confident expectation; and it's basic to Christian motivation, obedience, and perseverance. But the specifics of this hope often get muddled in the midst of a modern jumble of religious ideas. "Next?" is a careful study of the wonderful Christian hope found in the Bible. It was written to be read and understood by a wide audience as it deals honestly and kindly with even sensitive subjects.Park Linscomb has been a minister of the church of Christ for over 40 years in the mission field of New England. He holds a BA in Bible from Lubbock Christian University and a MSHS in Counseling and Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University. Beyond Bible study and ministry, he has active sid-interests in Biblical archaeology, psychology, technology, and family. He is married (Linda) and has a son (Adam), daughter-in-law (Meri) and two wonderful grandsons (Jackson and Jordan).

Book The Next Supper

Download or read book The Next Supper written by Corey Mintz and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing expose of the restaurant industry, and a path to a better, safer, happier meal. In the years before the pandemic, the restaurant business was booming. Americans spent more than half of their annual food budgets dining out. In a generation, chefs had gone from behind-the-scenes laborers to TV stars. The arrival of Uber Eats, DoorDash, and other meal delivery apps was overtaking home cooking. Beneath all that growth lurked serious problems. Many of the best restaurants in the world employed unpaid cooks. Meal delivery apps were putting restaurants out of business. And all that dining out meant dramatically less healthy diets. The industry may have been booming, but it also desperately needed to change. Then, along came COVID-19. From the farm to the street-side patio, from the sweaty kitchen to the swarm of delivery vehicles buzzing about our cities, everything about the restaurant business is changing, for better or worse. The Next Supper tells this story and offers clear and essential advice for what and how to eat to ensure the well-being of cooks and waitstaff, not to mention our bodies and the environment. The Next Supper reminds us that breaking bread is an essential human activity and charts a path to preserving the joy of eating out in a turbulent era.

As an operating system for society, money needs a major upgrade. What Comes After Money? offers a wealth of alternatives to the current monetary system. In this anthology of essays drawn from the popular web magazine Reality Sandwich, 20 visionary thinkers explore the roots of the modern economic crisis and propose diverse solutions: instituting local currencies; creating reputation or gift economies (based on historical and contemporary); introducing spirituality into the equation; and many more. Contributors include economist Bernard Leitaer, media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, musician Paul D. Miller (a.k.a. DJ Spooky), theoretical physicist Amit Goswami, Larry Harvey (founder of Burning Man), and Peter Lamborn Wilson (a.k.a. Hakim Bey).
