Book excerpt: Discover pertinent information for assisting couples in achieving permanence in their relationships from the invaluable perspectives on love and love relationships found in Coupling . . . What Makes Permanence? This fascinating new volume features insightful reflections of prominent couples therapists on the subject of love and the components that make long-lasting couples relationships. Centered around a recognition of human beings'seemingly instinctual need for attachment, these perceptive chapters address a range of questions from "What is love?" to "How is love maintained?" Two main steps to permanence that will aid therapists are balancing adult needs with child needs in both partners and recognizing the pervasive, illusory factors that are the downfall of so many relationships. Profiles of couples who have stayed together for many years are examined and used as models for therapists to foster longevity in their clients'relationships. Important elements that contribute to permanence are advocated, such as the ability to give up illusions in the relationship, creating a web of trust to mitigate fears of loss, and achieving authentic and generative connection as opposed to the uneasy, frantic shifting for balance known as codependency. Practical advice on these and other fascinating topics make this an invaluable resource for therapists helping couples to attain the elusive goal of permanence in their relationships.

Book excerpt: The Meaning of Life is the transcription of a series of six talks given by Norman Grubb in the early 1970's to Camps Farthest Out, a non-denominational group of Christians seeking to find the deeper truths of God…of themselves…of life...and how to live it. CFO had numerous guest speakers and this was one of several times Norman shared his `knowings' with them. Norman's passion and joy was always to tell every seeker how a perfect God lives in His perfectly created humans. In John 17, Jesus' last prayer before He goes to the Cross, Jesus prays for all of those who will believe in Him…that we might be one even as He and the Father are one. Jesus called the promise of His Cross oneness and unity…Norman spoke of the fulfillment of His promise as our union with Christ. In these talks Norman shows us, step by step, how the Father accomplishes His purposes for each of us. The front cover of this book is a `shadow' of this very truth. It is a picture of Moses' burning bush - a common bush aflame, yet not consumed…a profound image of man aflame with the Living Christ, but remaining fully human! This IS the meaning of life…God living and moving and having His being in and as man…Christ was seen and experienced through the human Jesus two thousand years ago and since Pentecost…Christ, by His Holy Spirit, has come to live again in all who receive Him.

Book Mods Rockers and the Music of the British Invasion

Download or read book Mods Rockers and the Music of the British Invasion written by James E. Perone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-11-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical floodgates were opened after the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. Suddenly, the U.S. record charts, radio, and television were overrun with British rock and pop musicians. Although this British Invasion was the first exposure many Americans had to popular music from the United Kingdom, British pop — and more specifically British rock and roll — had been developing since the middle of the 1950s. Author James Perone here chronicles the development of British rock, from the 1950s imitators of Elvis Presley and other American rockabilly artists, to the new blends of rockabilly, R&B, Motown, and electric blues that defined the British Invasion as we recognize it today. Die-hard fans of the Beatles, the Who, and the Kinks will all want a copy, as will anyone interested in the 1960s more generally. May 1964 saw major gang-style battles break out in British resort communities between the Mods and the Rockers. The tensions between the two groups had been developing for several years, with each group claiming their own sense of culture and style. The Mods wore designer clothing, rode Vespa motor scooters, and shared an affinity for black American soul music, while the Rockers favored powerful motorcycles, greased-back hair, and 1950s American rock and roll. It was within this context that the sounds of the British Invasion developed. Mods, Rockers, and the Music of the British Invasion chronicles the development of British rock through the iconic artists who inspired the movement, as well as through the bands who later found incredible success overseas. In addition to analyzing the music in the context of the British youth culture of the early 1960s, Perone analyzes the reasons that the British bands came to so thoroughly dominate the record charts and airwaves in the United States. The contributions of Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Tommy Steele, the Tornados, Tony Sheridan, Blues Incorporated, and others to the development of British rock and roll are examined, as are the contributions and commercial and artistic impact of major British Invasion artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, the Yardbirds, Manfred Mann, the Who, the Kinks, and others. After investigating these groups and their influences upon one another, Perone concludes by examining the commercial and stylistic impact British rock musicians had on the American music of the time.
