Book excerpt: A heartfelt story about friendship, hope, and forgiveness: two childhood friends, Maggie and Lizzy, seek self-discovery and personal healing. They ultimately find inspiration after searching to reveal the reasons for Maggie’s lifelong tendencies toward self-denial as the “great pretender.” A courageous book which stirs the soul, this novel demonstrates that the written word is far from silent. This journey of healing undoubtedly leaves a lasting impression, as it not only provides divine inspiration to accept life’s disappointments but also recognition of the compelling power of forgiveness. After all, if the heart truly forgives, there is nothing to forget. ENDORSEMENTS: “Like brisk winds over calm waters—this story stirs the heart to find forgiveness and the soul to heal. Where the sacred and profane converge, Margaret McBride embraces divine inspiration!” —Katrina Arnim, consultant “Great feel-good book! The folksy language and loveable characters drew me in as I anticipated the meaning of the hints sprinkled along the way. The end was fantastic—filled with surprising ‘ah-ha’ moments and shocking twists.” —Kim Stiles, author of Motivation for Mom series “Although That Melvin Bray is a novel that unravels a mystery, it is also a story about friendship as growing old together is also the ability of staying “young together.” A friend is often a mirror of ourselves—this novel is a marvelous reflection of a very comfortable, trusting friendship.” —NY Times bestselling author G.B. Giorgio “That Melvin Bray filled my heart with joy, laughter, humility, reverence, and rage. Margaret McBride has combined all those emotions to create an unforgettable memory for every reader to share.” —Maureen Mayberry, landscape artist

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Better written by Melvin Bray and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we could actually change the world by telling better stories? What if the world we have-with its racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, religious hatred, ecological disregard-is exactly the world we have spun into existence through the stories we have told? In his new book, Melvin Bray insists that a better world is possible if the stories around which we organize our lives begin to match the beauty we imagine is possible. Bray puts forth his own daring yet faithful reimaginings of classic faith stories that inspire more beautiful, more just, more virtue-filled ways of being in the world. Better offers a spiritual path on which people-for whom life has called into question many of their assumptions about God and the world-can continue to hold onto their faith, while joining others of goodwill in seeking sustainable, cooperative, and courageous answers to the seemingly intractable problems of our time. Named a Best Book of 2017--the Cornwall List on "Ponderings on a Faith Journey" blog.

Book More Beautiful and More Terrible

Download or read book More Beautiful and More Terrible written by Imani Perry and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perry argues that racism in America has moved into a new phase--post-intentional For a nation that often optimistically claims to be post-racial, we are still mired in the practices of racial inequality that plays out in law, policy, and in our local communities. One of two explanations is often given for this persistent phenomenon: On the one hand, we might be hypocritical—saying one thing, and doing or believing another; on the other, it might have little to do with us individually but rather be inherent to the structure of American society. More Beautiful and More Terrible compels us to think beyond this insufficient dichotomy in order to see how racial inequality is perpetuated. Imani Perry asserts that the U.S. is in a new and distinct phase of racism that is “post-intentional”: neither based on the intentional discrimination of the past, nor drawing upon biological concepts of race. Drawing upon the insights and tools of critical race theory, social policy, law, sociology and cultural studies, she demonstrates how post-intentional racism works and maintains that it cannot be addressed solely through the kinds of structural solutions of the Left or the values arguments of the Right. Rather, the author identifies a place in the middle—a space of “righteous hope”—and articulates a notion of ethics and human agency that will allow us to expand and amplify that hope. To paraphrase James Baldwin, when talking about race, it is both more terrible than most think, but also more beautiful than most can imagine, with limitless and open-ended possibility. Perry leads readers down the path of imagining the possible and points to the way forward.

Book Faith Forward Volume 3

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Csinos
  • Publisher : Wood Lake Publishing Inc.
  • Release : 2018-05-30
  • ISBN : 1773431404
  • Pages : 173 pages

Download or read book Faith Forward Volume 3 written by David Csinos and published by Wood Lake Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of his best-known songs, Bruce Cockburn sings about “lovers in a dangerous time.” Well, there’s no doubt that our world is under siege and that we are living in a dangerous time. With massive crises threatening life all over our planet – economic crises, social crises, ecological crises, the list goes on and on – our faith can’t afford to ignore the reality of our diverse and fragile world. Our faith needs to move or inspire us to get our hands not just dirty, but downright bruised and bloody as we work against the tremendous forces of hatred, death, and suffering in our world. That’s what this third volume in the “Faith Forward” series is about. It’s about forming Christian “lovers” in the dangerous time in which we live. It’s about dousing the flames of hatred and suffering in our world by pouring out unconditional, sacrificial love. It’s about having rich and meaningful and difficult conversations about how we can do ministry with children, youth, and families in ways that have the power to heal the world. How can we empower children and youth to disrupt the world with God’s love? How can we empower them to overturn the tables and shatter the walls, and to pour out compassion, and justice, and love in the world? This kind of ministry isn’t easy or popular work. And it isn’t going to pack kids into our church. But it’s truly life-and-death work, and we need to do it as embodiments of God’s hope and healing. Like the other books in this series, Faith Forward Volume 3 collects the wisdom of some the leading “thinkers” and “shakers” and “movers” in the arena of ministry with children and youth, including Alaa Basatneh, Brian D. McLaren, Soong-Chan Rah, Waltrina N. Middleton, Daniel White Hodge, Lisa and Mark Scandrette, Marcia J. Bunge, Leslie Neugent, Ivy Beckwith, Eboo Patel, Almeda M. Wright, and Amy K. Butler.

What about violence? What’s my role in helping children learn about the Bible and feel comfortable asking questions about what they read? When kids ask about the relevancy of the Bible for today, what do we say? How we read and interpret the Bible with children may mean the difference between whether or not it will continue to be an important source for their faith development as they become young adults. We want to teach them in ways that they don’t have to unlearn later. Written by an expert in children’s ministry as a guide for anyone helping with the Celebrate Wonder Sunday school curriculum; however, it is relevant for all adults who want to explore ways to help children read, engage, wrestle, and grow into deeper understanding of the Bible.
