Book That Great Heart The Life of I A O Shaughnessy Oilman Philanthropist

Download or read book That Great Heart The Life of I A O Shaughnessy Oilman Philanthropist written by Doug Hennes and published by Bookhouse Fulfillment. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignatius Aloysius O'Shaughnessy, the thirteenth child of a Minnesota bootmaker, was kicked out of St. John's University in 1902 after skipping Sunday vespers to drink beer. On his way home, the sixteen-year-old stopped at the College of St. Thomas, bumped into the president, and shared his story, admitting his mistake. The president, impressed with O'Shaughnessy's honesty, accepted him as a student. O'Shaughnessy went on to star on the football team, and graduated in 1907. Ten years later, he founded Globe Oil & Refining Co. in Oklahoma, becoming the largest independent oil refiner in the U.S. He gave most of his money away, as the leading benefactor of Catholic higher education in the U.S., with St. Thomas and Notre Dame as primary beneficiaries. He funded hundreds of organizations and causes, reviewing every inquiry, always sending a reply, and, if he said no, an explanation. In this biography full of warm and revealing anecdotes, O'Shaughnessy's inspiring story finally is told.

Download or read book Inspecting Jews written by Laurence Roth and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inthis book, Laurence Roth argues that the popular genre of Jewish detective stories offers new insights into the construction of ethnic and religious identity. Roth frames his study with the concept of "kosher hybridity" to look at the complex process of mediation between Jewish and American culture in which Jewish writers voice the desire to be both different from and yet the same as other Americans. He argues that the detective story, located at the intersection of narrative and popular culture in modern America, examines the need for order in a disorderly society, and thus offers a window into the negotiation of Jewish identity differing from that of literary fiction. The writers of these popular cultural texts, which are informed by contradiction and which thrive on intended and unintended ironies, formulate idioms for American Jewish identities that intentionally and unintentionally create social, ethnic, and religious syntheses in American Jewish life. Roth examines stories about American Jewish detectives--including Harry Kemelman's Rabbi Small, Faye Kellerman's Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus, Stuart Kaminsky's Abe Lieberman, and Rochelle Krich's Jessica Drake--not only as a genre of literature but also as a reflection of contemporary acculturation in the American Jewish popular arts.

Book Memoirs of a Tory Radical

Download or read book Memoirs of a Tory Radical written by Nigel Lawson and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully revised and updated edition of Nigel Lawson's extraordinary autobiography. A key minister for a full decade and Chancellor of the Exchequer, from 1983 to 1989, Nigel Lawson was one of the most powerful and effective of Margaret Thatcher's colleagues, and among the chief architects of Thatcherism. This abridged edition of Lord Lawson's memoirs - first published as The View from No.11 in 1992 and acclaimed as one of the best political memoirs of the period - goes straight to the heart of economic policy-making at a time of crisis and creative change. It explains the workings of government with candour, clarity and depth, against the backdrop of the remarkable story of the rise and fall of his political collaboration with Margaret Thatcher, productive and successful for many years, but ending with his dramatic resignation in October 1989.The book includes a new final chapter reflecting on events from the perspective of 2010, also discussing the crisis in the banking sector and global warming.

In this celebratory poem, Kezna and Shanice remind young readers that despite differences, they all deserve to be loved just the way they are.
