Download or read book That Girl from the Dummy Line written by Martha Sanders and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "That Girl From the Dummy Line" is a first person account of growing up in severe poverty in the delta farm region of northeastern Arkansas in 50s and 60s in a tar-papered shack built on a dirt road known as the dummy line. The dummy line girl was the third of ten children born to an illiterate farmer and his wife, who didn't understand their daughter's love of education or her desire to go to college as she excelled in school. Indeed, they actively attempted to prevent her from leaving home to seek a college degree. The dummy line girl spent much of her childhood working in the cotton fields. Farm work and other chores took a toll on the dummy line girl's ability to stay on track with her studies and goals. Further complicating her life was a dysfunctional relationship with her parents and an abusive older sister. The local public school system became her refuge and provided her with the hope she needed in order to plan a better future for herself. This is a story about a girl who refused to accept the path given her by accident of birth - a girl who wanted more and believed she deserved more and was willing to work for it.

Download or read book Brunhilda s Backwards Day written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brunhilda the witch loves making trouble. Each morning, she wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, puts on her ugliest dress, eats spider mush for breakfast, and brushes her teeth with candy. Then she looks in the mirror and happily observes, “You are utterly repulsive!” As soon as she leaves the house, she begins to spread her misery. No one is safe from her rainy-day spells or her wart-growing charms! But one night, Brunhilda’s cat makes trouble instead. When Brunhilda wakes up that next morning, she is on the right side of the bed. All she can find to wear is a fluffy pink ball gown. And her spider mush is replaced with oatmeal; her candy replaced by toothpaste! The day has gone completely backwards. What will happen when Brunhilda casts her all-time favorite misery-inducing spells? This is a silly story about how sometimes being nice can be more rewarding than being mean. Brunhilda may decide to keep some of her warts in the end, but she’s a changed witch. Waking up on the wrong side of the bed just doesn’t work for her anymore. A picture book for 3 to 6 year olds, this book teaches kids that being kind and nice to people actually makes you feel better than playing tricks and being mean. A good lesson for young children, teachers and parents will enjoy the message while kids will be enthralled with the bright, colorful illustrations and the silly, warty witch. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
Download or read book Minstrel of the Appalachians written by Loyal Jones and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that Bascom Lamar Lunsford would "cross hell on a rotten rail to get a folk song"—his Southern highlands folk-song compilations now constitute one of the largest collections of its kind in the Library of Congress—but he did much more than acquire songs. He preserved and promoted the Appalachian mountain tradition for generations of people, founding in 1928 the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, North Carolina, an annual event that has shaped America's festival movement. Loyal Jones pens a lively biography of a man considered to be Appalachian music royalty. He also includes a "Lunsford Sampler" of ballads, songs, hymns, tales, and anecdotes, plus a discography of his recordings.

Download or read book Whitefish Bay written by Thomas H. Fehring and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of whitefish in the Lake Michigan bay that frames this village gave it its name. The whitefish also helped feed the appetites of patrons of the resorts that once graced the community. Whitefish Bay quickly grew away from fishing and resorts to become the "Gold Coast" village north of Milwaukee. Nestled close enough to the city to allow an easy work commute, yet far enough away to provide an attractive community atmosphere, Whitefish Bay became a desirable location for families to put down roots. Stately homes went up alongside early farmhouses. Stores and other vibrant commercial enterprises quickly followed along with schools, churches, clubs, and organizations that continue to provide residents with a strong sense of community.
Download or read book The Voices of Integrity written by David H. Kerr and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voices of Integrity by David H. Kerr, August 8, 2013 The best way to understand people is to hear their story. Because in the lives of others, we hear echoes of ourselves. The power of the human voice to tear down walls cannot be overstated - and the power of the voice of recovery is gathering. Gil Kerlikowske, Director, White House Office of National Drug Control policy, June 11, 2012. The savvy, the sincerity, the knowledge, the crafty talents, the instincts, the ability to read others, the hard work and finally the charisma and role modeling of recovering addicts, illuminated my path in founding the Integrity House drug treatment program in Newark, NJ, in the fall of 1968. This book describes the founding role that Integrity House played in working with other people and programs across the country to generate the first working definition of a type of self-help communal interactive healing that is positive and therapeutic. Dr. Max Jones defined this worldwide model as the Therapeutic Community. The book offers the history of Integrity House through the many compelling true stories of addiction, treatment and recovery, told by addicts who have completed the Integrity House program since the late 1960s. It gives the reader a solid understanding of the disease, the personal torment and the crimes essential to obtain money for the next fix. It describes the difficulty clean and sober addicts have in staying on the road to recovery, year after year. Finally the reader will be amazed at the achievements, the insights and the help for others, demonstrated by the recovering addicts interviewed.

Patricia Polacco is now one of America's most loved children's book creators, but once upon a time, she was a little girl named Trisha starting school. Trisha could paint and draw beautifully, but when she looked at words on a page, all she could see was jumble. It took a very special teacher to recognize little Trisha's dyslexia: Mr. Falker, who encouraged her to overcome her reading disability. Patricia Polacco will never forget him, and neither will we. This inspiring story will make a beautiful gift for the special child who needs encouragement, or any special teacher who has made a difference in the child's life.
