Nothing - nothing but to stand and gaze with tear-stained faces - to turn now and then with a look of wild despair, as something loved by one or the other was held up rudely for inspection; as the eager, gaping crowd, anxious to outdo each other in their efforts to secure some fancied bargain, forced their way to the front, neither heeding nor caring for the frequent rebuffs with which they met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emigrant Family, Vol. 3 of 3: Or the Story of an Australian Settler The gray-looking days of the July winter of Australia had set in, and the moderately-cold breezes of that season blew fresh and half tempestuous up from the South Seas, when the early risers of Sydney connected with mercantile affairs, whose first glance in the morning when they have hurried through the empty streets to a point of observation is ever towards the signal-post, discerned the signal for a homeward-bound whaler flying. For, in fact, I have merely concentrated in him singly, what the settler may easily enough meet with in a more dissipated form at the hands of several. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emigrant's Family: Or Scotland and Australia, a Tale Founded on Real Life, and Other Poems Miss Gibbon, of Johnston, This little volume, the fruits of the author's musings, is most respectfully and humbly dedicated, By William Jamie. Fair lady, like a tender flower That sweetly blooms in its young day, An offering from the muse's bower Before ye now I humbly lay. Oh! had the power and boon been mine, In sweetest strains to soar and sing, A richer garland would been thine, Wi' fairest gems of gentle spring. These simple lays and lowly strains, Lady, I fondly bring to you, I've glean'd them from the rural glens, Where first the muse I tried to woo. The forest flowers which scent the gale, And crystal streams that wind along The margin of the sunny vale, Are themes I've woven in my song. Book An Australian Christmas Collection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Australian Christmas Collection: Stories, Sketches, Essays Christmas being proverbially and traditionally the time for family reunions, it is only in accord with the spirit of the season that a writer should celebrate that great festival by bringing together the scattered productions of his pen, and placing them sociably side by side between the covers of one book. This volume is, for the most part, a selection from my contributions to Australian periodical and newspaper literature during the past few years. The acknowledgment of my grateful appreciation is due to the several hundred subscribers throughout the colonies, who have done me the honour of ordering copies of the book in advance of its publication. Book The Family Among the Australian Aborigines

Download or read book The Family Among the Australian Aborigines written by Bronislaw Malinowski and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Family Among the Australian Aborigines: A Sociological Study The importance of the subject treated in this study, as well as the prominent part played by the Australian evidence in the problem of kinship, will, it is believed, amply justify a detailed inquiry into the institution of the family in Australia. It is, however, always desirable for a monograph like the present one, besides being a mere collection and description of facts, to have a sufficiently wide theoretical scope. It ought to demonstrate some general principle upon the particular example treated, and to approach the problem from a new standpoint. I wish here shortly to indicate how far a slight and imperfect attempt in this direction has been made. In describing the facts of family life in Australia I have tried to show that even if the problems of origins and development of an institution be put aside and the inquiry be limited to the actual facts (in this case to the actual working of the aboriginal kinship organization), there are plenty of subjects of great theoretical importance, some of which, as yet not fully considered by sociologists. On the other hand, I have tried to show that in dealing with purely sociological problems it is necessary, in order to do justice to the complexity and fulness of social phenomena, to draw into the field of inquiry a series of facts often hitherto partially or completely neglected. Book The Family Chain Marriage and Relationships of Native Australian Tribes Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Family Chain Marriage and Relationships of Native Australian Tribes Classic Reprint written by John Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Family Chain Marriage and Relationships of Native Australian Tribes Two totemic families form, as it were, a matrimonial alli ance of a binding and permanent character. All the members of each successive generation intermarry, the men cicadas with the women crows, and the men crows with the women cicadas. It is not so much a compact between two men of different totems as between two families. Two such families, if prolific, may people a large area in process of time offshoots of such a double-couple, as it may be termed, being detached from the parent stock from time to time. It might thus come about that a tribe Of cicadas and crows would be formed, and probably this is the mode of origin of the two moieties into which tribes are divided. The original meanings of the names of moieties are often lost, but when preserved they are generally found to signify animals. Book Australia Our Colonies and Other Islands of the Sea Classic Reprint

Download or read book Australia Our Colonies and Other Islands of the Sea Classic Reprint written by Frank George Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia, Our Colonies, and Other Islands of the Sea The purpose of this book is to give the children who read it a living knowledge of Australia and the chief islands of the world, and especially those which have become colonies or dependencies of the United States. Within the past few years our own territories have been extended to the other side of the globe. We have acquired new lands with new climates, re sources, and products. We have adopted into our national family millions of people belonging to races different from ours, having different customs and a different civilization. In our far-away lands the whole aspect of nature seems changed, and we seem to be in a new world. This is so not only of Samoa, Hawaii, and the Philippines, but also of Porto Rico and our dependent sister republic of the West Indies, the great island of Cuba. This book aims to take the children themselves into this new world. In a personally conducted tour through the eyes of the author they travel over it, seeing our brown-skinned cousins of the several colonies as they are at home. They learn about the resources of the various islands, and of their value to the United States. They visit the people on the farms and in the factories. They spend some time in the cities and villages, and they explore the wilds, observing the wonders of. Plant and animal creation.
