Book Thapathi s Tale

Download or read book Thapathi s Tale written by Radha Raju and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thapathi’s Tale is a first person account of a woman born within the first decade post-Independence. It chronicles her transformation from a shy little girl in an orthodox south Indian family in Chennai, raised to be a “good home maker”, to a confident professional, eventually transcending the prevailing cultural definitions and expectations. This tale, told without filters, captures with candour the way she keeps pushing her boundaries, finding her own space in the world, to establish her individual identity as a person of her own. But this book is more than just her story- it chronicles the changing values and lifestyles of a generation that experienced transformation and the adaptations needed for coping at every stage . Every era comes alive through the small details, captured with love and humour. “Thapathi” is the affectionate name given to Radha by her grandchildren. While this story was originally written for them, it will resonate with generations that grew up in pre-liberalised India, and experienced the enormous change that took place in the turn of the century. And for the fresh generations to which Thapathi’s grandchildren belong, it will give a glimpse into a warm and cosy world that has vanished from sight but lingers in the minds as stories of a fading generation.

Book excerpt: A Landmark in recent Indian cinema, by acclaimed director Mani Ratnam. In January 1993 sectarian rioting left 2,000 Hindus and Muslims dead in Bombay. Only two years later Mani Ratnam's audacious Tamil film Bombay (1995) used these events as a backdrop to a love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl. Bombay was condemned by Muslim critics for misrepresentation and it was embroiled in censorship controversies. These served only to heighten interest and the film ran to packed houses in India and abroad. Lalitha Gopolan shows how Bombay struggles to find a narrative that can reconcile communal differences. She looks in detail at the way official censors tried to change the film under the influence of powerful figures in both the Muslim and the Hindu communities. In going on to analyse the aesthetics of Bombay, she shows how themes of social and gender difference are rendered through performance, choreography, song and cinematography. This is a fascinating account of a landmark in recent Indian cinema.

His stylized dialogues and screen mannerisms are legion, and his guy-next-door-cum-superhero image has found a hysterically appreciative following among millions of moviegoers. Naman Ramachandran’s marvellous biography recounts Rajini’s career in meticulous detail, tracing his incredible cinematic journey from Apoorva Raagangal (1975) to Kochadaiyaan (2013). Along the way, the book provides rare insights into the Thalaivar’s personal life, from his childhood days to his times of struggle—when he was still Shivaji Rao Gaekwad—and then his eventual stardom: revealing how a legend was born.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Onscreen/Offscreen is an exploration of the politics and being of filmic images. The book examines contestations inside and outside the Tamil film industry over the question "what is an image?" Answers to this question may be found in the ontological politics that take place on film sets, in theatre halls, and in the social fabric of everyday life in South India, from populist electoral politics and the gendering of social space to caste uplift and domination. Bridging and synthesizing linguistic anthropology, film studies, visual studies, and media anthropology, Onscreen/Offscreen rethinks key issues across a number of fields concerned with the semiotic constitution of social life, from the performativity and ontology of images to questions of spectatorship, realism, and presence. In doing so, it offers both a challenge to any approach that would separate image from social context and a new vision for linguistic anthropology beyond the question of "language."

Book Caste Communication and Power

Download or read book Caste Communication and Power written by Biswajit Das and published by SAGE Publishing India. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caste, Communication and Power explores communication and the constitution of caste in Indian society. Intimately connected, both communication and caste are determined by historical developments. The book looks at communication as a lens to study caste and power relations, with its immense potential to shape perception and affect ground reality. It also studies the evolution of the conceptual and theoretical foundations of caste and power relations, and maps their emergence from communicative resources and practices. These communication practices are inevitably linked to the social structure, with their reliance on symbolic forms of self-expression, often revealing the underlying ideological attitudes. The book studies this interface of culture and media, evaluating the caste question and the associated power relations in terms of modes of communication practised in the society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is the largest film producing country in the world and its output has a global reach. After years of marginalisation by academics in the Western world, Indian cinemas have moved from the periphery to the centre of the world cinema in a comparatively short space of time. Bringing together contributions from leading scholars in the field, this Handbook looks at the complex reasons for this remarkable journey. Combining a historical and thematic approach, the Handbook discusses how Indian cinemas need to be understood in their historical unfolding as well as their complex relationships to social, economic, cultural, political, ideological, aesthetic, technical and institutional discourses. The thematic section provides an up-to-date critical narrative on diverse topics such as audience, censorship, film distribution, film industry, diaspora, sexuality, film music and nationalism. The Handbook provides a comprehensive and cutting edge survey of Indian cinemas, discussing Popular, Parallel/New Wave and Regional cinemas as well as the spectacular rise of Bollywood. Book Sukumara Natana Thathwa

Download or read book Sukumara Natana Thathwa written by Uma Tapasyananda and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sukumara Natana Thathwa, began with random thoughts, observations, reactions, being noted down for me alone, and then, very soon, it took on an existence of its own, dragging me along with it, tightly chained, so that I was pulled back to the subject in spite of the numerous deviations, where I was forced to play various roles, that of a wife, a mother, a teacher, even a performer! In every role I played , I felt insufficient, incomplete, except a few moments on stage, that stands out as the sole meaningful events that justify ones existence. It is perhaps these shining moments that has convinced me of the worth of this work. It is also the continuous, eternal search for these same moments, where life is transformed and all conflicts are momentarily resolved, when all seems well and alright in this world, that has led me on, into stage experiments with contents, as well as, stylistics of Mohiniattom, involving in-depth interpretations of characters represented on stage, attempting amalgamations of themes, combining fictions with ancient lore, also trying to bring universal relevance in thematic presentations.

Book excerpt: The Gadāyuddham (The Duel of the Maces) is a kāvya (poetry) composed in classical Kannada literary style at the turn of the eleventh century. It is written in campū, a genre that developed in the tenth century as a mixture of poetry and prose. Ranna’s poem is remarkably dramatic in nature and is a meditation on the cost of war. Crisp dialogue, body gestures and imagery fill the poem. It is as if the poet were giving us directions for a play. Ranna employs ‘flashbacks’, a technique called simhāvalōkana, that is, a lion turning casually to glance behind him. Ranna builds up to the duel through characters recalling episodes of injury or through lamentation. The duel occupies only a short space in the eighth canto, but Ranna takes this time to fill in past episodes and reflect on the impact of war. This thousand-year-old poem will interest scholars as well as lay readers. Please note: This title is co-published with Manohar Publishers, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
